Motivation & Objectives

LNEC Lisbon 31May 1June2012

- The main reason for degradation of reinforced concrete structures is the corrosion of
steel reinforcement. Its consequences are: i) reduction in the cross sectional area of
the rebars and ii) deterioration of bond with the surrounding concrete.

IC

DS

- This means that besides the structural resistance being reduced, the ductility of
reinforced concrete structures may also be severely reduced by rebars corrosion. In
frame structures the ductility can be evaluated by the rotation capacity in plastic
hinges.

Motivation & Objectives

LNE
C

- There have been many studies in literature about ductility of damage rebars and
about flexure resistance of beams or slabs with corroded rebars. To our knowledge,
there are not studies about the ductility of beams or slabs with corroded Tempcore
rebars.
- The aim of this study is to quantify the rotation capacity of reinforced concrete beams
with damaged rebars.
- To achieve this aim an experimental campaign was developed with corroded beams
for two levels and two combinations of corrosion.

LNEC Lisbon 31May 1June2012

DS

- Five beams with tensile reinforcement ratio equal to 0.6% and different damages
were tested up to rupture.

- Two types of corrosion were inserted in an artificial way

DS

- Rotation capacity versus Damage

12

LNEC Lisbon 31May 1June2012

IC

Rotation capacity is seriously influenced by the corrosion.

For pitting corrosion up to 10% the rotation capacity was not significantly changed.
For damage equal to 20% both results indicates a reduction of rotation capacity close
to 50%.

- Rotation capacity of damage beams versus Eurocode 2 curve

In spite of the high reduction occurred on rotation capacity for damage up to 20%, the
values obtained on tests were always higher than EC2 curve.

Discussion and Conclusions

- The differences found out between the two types of corrosion for damage up to 10%
suggests that bond between concrete and rebars is very important for the range of
moderate damages, but for higher damages its influence becomes negligible.
- This suggestion is also sustained in the fact that bond increases for initial corrosion.

DS

- When general and pitting corrosion acted simultaneously, the reduction in rotation
capacity was 2.7 times higher than the rebars damage.
- The values obtained for rotation capacity in tests for damaged beams were always
higher than EC2 curve.

IC

- So, if reinforced concrete structures with Tempcore ductility class C rebars have
corrosion up to 20%, they will be able to guarantee a level of ductility similar to the
implicit ductility design values for an undamaged structure, which allows at least
reaching the ultimate load for current structures.

Future Research

LNE
C

It is suggested to extend this experimental work (to quantify the ductility of reinforced
concrete structures with damage) for:
- high strength concrete;
- cyclic actions.

It is also suggested to develop numerical models to simulate:

- reinforced concrete structures with corrosion;
- the bond between concrete and rebars with corrosion including post-yield.
