Goanna Fight
Clockwise: Me, Alycia, Susanna, Andy, Chaela, & Roxy
G’day,
The first semester is half over and even among the stress of mid-term exams students still have
time to talk with us. This month I would like to share with you the story of a few students I have met so you
will know better how to pray for them. I also want to give you a glimpse into what my week looks like. As
you can see from the pictures above Brisbane is an exciting, beautiful, interesting, and fun place to live. As
a team we attended an Australian Football League (AFL) game where we saw the Brisbane Lions defeat
the Sydney Swans. AFL is an interesting game to watch and try to understand. [Fun fact: Australia, like
the US uses the term soccer; American football is deemed as gridiron]. During the Easter week the students
did not have class, we had a week of meetings and administrative duties. However, one night we went to
the city to try our hand at African drumming. It was so much fun, especially since we took the Upper
Midwest Worldwide Student Network Director, Candice Siewert with us. After a week away from campus I
was eager to get back, after Bible study I walked up the hill to a ridiculous scene: a crowd of people
gathered around two goanna lizards fighting (I still say they were hugging).
MEET THE STUDENTS
I met Roy the first day I ran into Doug this year. He is from South Korea
and comes from a Buddhist family except for his mom who is Catholic.
He has been turned off by radical Christians in Korea and those who’ve
tried to push Christ down his throat. However, he enjoys talking to me
about his reservations and pain. Roy does believe in the Creator God,
he struggles with Jesus. His main barrier to faith is because he cannot
understand why Jesus doesn’t heal people if they are good (for instance
his aunt who died of cancer). He constantly tells me he doesn’t want to
believe, but maybe someday. I praise God that Roy has hope that one
day he may see what grace feels like. Pray that he is not confused by the
differences between denominations (considering he knows a lot about
Catholicism) and that God changes his soil because I am just going to
keep throwing seeds his way hoping one day he understands how much
Christ loves him.
Sophea is originally
from Cambodia but
has been in Australia
for a long time. She
spends a lot of time
with Doug & Roy.
