Law enforcement to
have extra officer
patrols this weekend
INFORMATION
SUBMITTED
LIMA St. Patricks
Day has become a big night
out for many people but it is
also becoming a dangerous
night on Americas roadways. That is why local law
enforcement announced they
will be out cracking down
on and arresting drunk drivers this weekend through St.
Patricks Day.
The
Allen
County
Sheriffs Office, the Lima
Police Department, as well
as the Ohio State Highway
Patrol, will have extra
officers on patrol beginning this weekend through
Wednesday.
If you are attending a St.
Patricks Day celebration
and plan on using alcohol:
Designate a sober driver before the party begins
and give that person your
car keys;
Dont starve yourself
before or during the party enjoy the food;
Buzzed driving is
drunk driving - if you have
a buzz, dont even think
about getting behind the
wheel. Ask a sober friend
for a ride home or call a
cab, friend, family member
to come and get you.
Dont press your luck
this St. Patricks Day; drive
sober or get pulled over.
Designate a sober driver in advance before the
festivities begin. If you plan
on using alcohol, never
drive while impaired, never
ride with someone who is
impaired and if you think
they are impaired, never let
your friends drive.
Always buckle up; its
the best defense against
impaired drivers.

As Bono launched into another mini-sermon on faith, justice and love, Father Jack
Heaslip did what he had always done for U2
-- he stood out of the limelight and prayed.
On this day in 2001, Bono wasnt standing
at a microphone in a packed concert venue.
He had slipped into a private gathering of
staffers from Capitol Hill offices, a strategic
circle of believers who shared his concerns
about poverty, AIDS and oceans of Third
World debt.
God is watching. ... Forget about the
judgment of history. For those of you who
are religious people, you have to think about
the judgment of God, said Bono. And dont
worry about asking God to bless what you
are doing. Look for what God is doing and
get involved in that, because that has already
been blessed.
That last saying -- a Bono standard -- was
a quote drawn from the Anglican priest
standing in the back of the room. As always,
the man who had been U2s behind-thescenes chaplain for decades declined to be
interviewed, but quietly met with people on
the edges of the crowd.
In liner notes accompanying its 2014 album, Songs of Innocence, the band called

his life at age 71. It was a rare glimpse of
the man the U2 quartet knew as a guidance
counselor and English teacher when they
were boys at Dublins nondenominational
Mount Temple Secondary School. In the
book U2 by U2, Bono described him as
a source of inspiration and calm over our
lives.
Heaslip eventually became an Anglican
priest with his own flock, while frequently
touring with U2. He attended the bands
prayer and Bible study sessions and, on one
occasion, someone recorded his blessing
before the 2001 Elevation tour. He began
with Isaiah 61, as quoted by Jesus.
The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on
me, because he has anointed me to preach
good news to the poor, said Heaslip, before
his own blessing. What we want God to do
tonight is to pour his anointing. And thats

Davis chips in to
take lead at Valspar
Championship
Associated Press
PALM HARBOR, Fla. Brian Davis takes pride in his
short game, which saved him from a rough finish Thursday and
gave him the lead in the Valspar Championship.
Coming off back-to-back bogeys, Davis chipped
in from 25 feet on the ninth green at Innisbrook for a
6-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead over past champion Sean OHair and Ricky Barnes after the opening
round.
For the 40-year-old Davis, it was the perfect finish to
go with what had been an ideal
start. Starting on the back nine of
the Copperhead course, he missed
three birdie chances inside 15 feet
and still went out in 30. There
wasnt a hint of trouble until a
three-putt from 45 feet on No. 7
and a poor chip at the par-3 eighth
that led to bogey.
And right when he thought he
had hit a good approach on No. 9,
he heard nothing.
I expected a clap and nobody
clapped, he said.
His chip came out with more
Davis
over-spin because of the grain in the
grass and might have gone about 6
feet by the hole except that it struck the pin.
Delighted, the Englishman said.
OHair got even more evidence that his game is turning
around by making eight birdies in the morning for a 66.
Barnes, playing in the afternoon, was tied for the lead until he
three-putted the par-3 17th from 35 feet and missed a 12-foot
birdie putt on the last hole.
Henrik Stenson, at No. 3 the highest-ranked player in the
field, made his debut at Innisbrook by dressing in the same
colors as the volunteers, though it wasnt intentional, and none
of the volunteers had matching pants to go with his periwinkle
shirt.
He didnt like the swing he had on the range, though he hit
enough good iron shots early on to get by. Stenson hit wedge
into the par-4 ninth for a final birdie and a bogey-free 67. He
was in a group that included Justin Thomas and Puerto Rico
Open winner Alex Cejka.
Thomas opened with nine straight pars, a bogey on the par-5
first hole, and then five birdies.
Stenson played with Adam Scott, who made four
straight bogeys on his back nine that ruined a good round.
He had a birdie on the final hole for a 71. Also in the group
was Jordan Spieth, slowed by a double bogey in his round
of 70.
Fell asleep out there for about 30 minutes, Scott said.
The Copperhead course didnt have a lot of bite with its
green, soft conditions. Thomas was among those who had
mud on the golf ball, which led to his bogey at No. 1. It still
was the sturdy test that makes it so popular. Even without
much wind and a mostly overcast sky, the course average
was about 71.4
The golf course was there no wind and fairly soft so
you have to try to make your score today if you could, Davis
said.
It wasnt there for John Daly. He opened with a double
bogey when he three-putted from 5 feet. He later four-putted
for triple bogey on the 14th hole. A birdie on the final hole
gave him an 81, but there was a sliver of good news at the end
of his long day. He wasnt selected for drug testing.
No, thats tomorrow, said Daly, with a grin.
He said on his SiriusXM radio show Tuesday that night
the PGA Tour didnt have random testing because he has been
picked at Innisbrook the last six years.
OHair won at Innisbrook in 2008, though he has fallen on
lean times. He has had to earn his card at the Web.com Tour
Finals each of the last two years.

Gordon eases up on
Lady Green stifle Blue
NASCAR after meeting
Jackets in Regional semis over safety concerns
By SCHUYLER DIXON
Associated Press
By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
ELIDA Ottoville girls basketball
mentor Dave Kleman felt prior to the
game his team was facing a mirror
image of itself Thursday night in the
first semifinal of the Elida Fieldhouse
Division IV Regionals New Riegel
and he figured execution would be
the key to the outcome.
At least the Lady Big Green didnt
knock themselves out in the process but
they did out-execute the Lady Yellow
Jackets 52-34 to move on to Saturday
nights finals at 7:30 p.m., with a trip to
Columbus at stake.
Their foe is the 6-5-led Kamryn
Troike and Fostoria St. Wendelin, who
held off a furious late rally by Pettisville
to record a 41-38 triumph.
In the opener, the start was the key.
The Lady Green (19-7) led from the
start, thanks to a drive to the basket by
Brooke Mangas (8 points, 3 steals) at
7:28. Their tough man-to-man defense
neutralized the Lady Jackets (20-5) in
limiting them to 3-of-8 shooting and
forcing four turnovers (10 total) in the
opener. On the opposite end against
the Jackets 1-2-2 zone, they came out
en fuego in slamming down 8-of-13
attempts, with senior Annie Lindeman
(game-high 16 markers - 4 bombs - 7
boards, 4 blocks) downing eight markers (2 triples). When Alexis Thorbahn
went window on a 3-ball from the left
wing that beat the horn, Ottovilles lead
was 19-7.
The start is all about how well weve
been playing the last two-plus months of
the season. We are really sharing the ball
well offensively, Kleman observed. It
all goes back to the fact that we were
trying to fit together four classes in a
cohesive unit and it took time for that
to really click for these girls. We really
focus on trying to share the ball and it
finally came together and you saw the
result today, especially at the start.
Ottoville continued to apply the
defensive vise to their foe in period
two and played it even better, keeping
New Riegel out of the paint and stymieing them to 2-of-12 shooting. Ottoville
wasnt quite as sharp offensively
3-of-8 but they still added to their
lead. When Bridget Landin (10 counters, 10 boards) sank 1-of-2 tosses at 27.1
ticks showing, their lead stood at 28-12.
Bridget is a freshman and we knew
this summer we had a good one; she
played with the varsity all summer. Its
not that she piles up the stats offensively but she is quick at 6-0, Kleman
continued. You look at our freshmen
and sophomores and they have won all
through their years. Our JV team only
lost two games and the way we run our
practices we mix them all together
those youngsters really made our varsity
work hard this work and got us ready.
Our eighth-grade team was unbeaten,
too, so I like our future; our present isnt
bad, either.
If New Riegel was ever going to
make a serious run at their foe, they
needed to slice the deficit substantially
in the third period by heating up offensively and turning over the Big Green
at the other end. Neither happened.
In fact, Ottoville when they didnt
turn it over four times in the canto (13
all told) canned 6-of-8 shots, with
Lindeman and Landwehr netting five
each. New Riegel couldnt heat up
4-of-11. Ottoville led by 44-20 on a
layin by Landwehr at 57 ticks before
Kara Scherger (9 counters, 5 assists, 3
thefts) drove for a deuce at 50 ticks to
reduce the deficit to 44-22, Ottoville.
The closest the Yellow Jackets could
get in the finale was the margin of victory, with both coaches taking advantage
of the opportunity to give their seniors
a chance to come off the floor to a hand
from their partisans for New Riegel,
for the final time and play their deeper reserves more.
Ottoville finished 12-of-21 from
2-point range (57.14 percent), 6-of-12
downtown (50%) and 10-of-19 from 15
feet (52.63%). They snatched 29 boards
(7 offensive); handed out 14 assists
Ottovilles Alicia Honigford takes a shot in the lane during Thursday evenings
game against New Riegel. The Lady Big Green won the match 52-34 to move on
to Regional Finals on Saturday. (DHI Media/Kenny Poling)
(6 by Alicia Honigford); nabbed seven
steals; and added eight fouls.
Defensively, the key was depth
against their point guard (Scherger),
Kleman added. We rotated people on
her all night: Bridget, Alexis, Alicia
and Haley. I think we wore her down.
Quickness is a great thing when you
have a lot of it.
New Riegel totaled 14-of-33 2-pointers (42.42%), 1-of-9 beyond the arc
(11.11%) and 3-of-5 singles (60%).
They tracked down 20 rebounds (6
offensive); gave over nine assists; had
six steals; and added 17 fouls.
In the nightcap, the Mohawks (23-4)
used a 15-point, 13-rebound, 2-block
night from Troike to hold on after taking
a 14-point lead early in the fourth period
and the Lady Blackbirds (24-2) coming
within 40-38 late in the game.
A free throw by Allie Rutter (14
markers with 8.7 ticks left helped seal
the deal.
FSW finished 16-of-33 inside the
arc (48.48%), 1-of-2 outside (50%)
and 6-of-14 from the line (42.86%).
They seized 30 caropms (9 offensive) as
Rutter and Hailee Burns had five each;
dished out nine assists (4 by Burns); six
steals; 12 errors; and 16 fouls.
Pettisville ended up 6-of-25 from
2-point range (24%), 6-of-19 beyond the
arc (31.58%) and 8-of-13 from charity
(61.54%) as Mikala Avina had a gamehigh 21 (5 bombs). They grabbed 29
boards (14 offensive) as Dana Fricke
secured 12; six assists (Jordyn Pursel
2); nine steals (Fricke 5 and Avina 4); 10
miscues; and 17 fouls.

Golf
(Continued from page 6)
The last two years have been disappointing for me,
OHair said. I lost really everything. I lost my ball-striking
and kind of lost my mind, lost confidence as far as how I play
the game because I like to hit a lot of different shots and I got
very swing-oriented.
DIVOTS: Course owners said Thursday the Copperhead
course will go through an extensive restoration this summer,
primarily to replace the grass in the fairways and rough, to
rebuild the greens and reshape some of the bunkers to the original Larry Packard design. Hopefully, they dont mess around
with the design too much because I think weve got a really
good golf course here, Scott said. Padraig Harrington, in
his first start since winning the Honda Classic, opened with
a 76. Georgia Tech senior Ollie Schniederjans, in his first
PGA Tour event, made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole
for an even-par 71.
TSHWANE OPEN
DALLAS Jeff Gordon eased up on NASCAR after discussing track safety issues with officials behind closed doors.
Gordon said Thursday he may have prematurely questioned
NASCARs plans for installations of SAFER barriers after
hitting a concrete wall two weekends ago in Atlanta. The energy-absorbing walls are common at tracks but not installed in
every place a car might crash.
Maybe that was me getting a little bit ahead of myself as far as what
the phased plan was, Gordon said.
All I can tell you is that everybody
is doing everything they possibly
can right now to speed that process
up and get these walls covered. And
thats what Im most happy about
right now.
The popular driver of the No.
24 Chevrolet said Tuesdays meeting
with officials was informative.
Gordon spoke at an event in downtown Dallas honoring Gordon during
Gordon
his final full season as a Sprint Cup
driver. The first of two Texas races in
NASCARs top series is April 11 in north Fort Worth, about 35
miles from the Dallas street where Gordon left a few tire marks
in some burnouts during a grand entrance.
SAFER barriers were one of the many safety initiatives that
came about after Dale Earnhardts death in 2001 in an accident
on the last lap of the Daytona 500.
The soft walls, a combination of steel and foam, debuted
in 2002 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and were gradually
added to tracks the next year and are currently installed in
some form at every track used by NASCARs top series.
Theres been increased scrutiny on the absence of SAFER
barriers since Kyle Busch broke his right leg and left foot at
Daytona last month.
Gordon said the focus of his meeting this week was about
plans at Daytona and other tracks to get SAFER barriers in all
the spots that NASCAR engineers believe theyre needed.
Its a time-consuming thing. It doesnt happen overnight,
said Gordon, who had a hard hit into an unprotected wall in
2008 at Las Vegas that led track officials to install a SAFER
barrier in that spot. Its a top priority to really make the tracks
even safer than they are today and do it in as timely a fashion
as whats possible from their suppliers.
Steve ODonnell, NASCARs top racing development
officer, was part of the meeting and has said in the past that
the series will continue to collaborate with all of our track
partners to find the best safety solutions.
Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage said
slightly less than half of the outside wall has the SAFER barrier on the 1 1/2-mile high-banked track. He said Texas hasnt
been part of the discussion for more barriers.
The last thing you want to do is have anybody get hurt,
particularly a guy like Jeff whos so important to you,
Gossage said. Hes been finding walls that nobodys ever
found in their history of these places.
Gordon has been on the pole twice in the first three races
this season but hasnt finished higher than 18th. He wrecked
at Daytona and Atlanta, and was forced to the back of the field
in a backup car in Las Vegas after an accident in the closing
minutes of the final practice session.
Its not fun to start out like this, Gordon added. Luckily
weve gotten those two poles because the poles have kept the
confidence there. Weve had some good moments throughout
the races, but were going to have to follow those up with
results to keep that confidence high.

Police, other groups try to tamp Let
announces plans for Frozen 2
down tensions in Ferguson
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) With measured remarks and a conciliatory tone,
police, political leaders and civil-rights
activists on Thursday sought to tamp
down tensions after two police officers
were shot in front of the Ferguson Police
Department during a protest.
The officers were quickly released
from the hospital, but St. Louis County
Police Chief Jon Belmar said they could
have easily been killed and called the
attack an ambush. Several people
were taken in for questioning after a
SWAT team converged on a Ferguson
home near the shooting site, but they
were later released, and no arrests were
made.
The shootings marked the first time
in more than seven months of tension
in Ferguson that officers were shot at a
protest, and the bloodshed threatened to
inflame the already fraught relationship
between police and protesters just as
the city seeks reforms in the wake of
a withering Justice Department report
on racial bias in its law-enforcement
practices.
The attack also seemed to create
another layer of race-related mistrust
after a week in which an unarmed young
black man was killed by a white officer
in Madison, Wisconsin, and a University
of Oklahoma fraternity chapter was
thrown off campus after a video surfaced showing members singing a racist
chant.

Immigrants
arrested in sweep
BY ALICIA A.
CALDWELL

WASHINGTON Federal
agents in a sweep targeting the
most dangerous criminal immigrants arrested 15 people who
have been allowed to remain in
the U.S. under President Barack
Obamas executive action
intended to protect children
who came to the U.S. years
ago with their parents, The
Associated Press has learned.
Fourteen of the 15 had
been convicted of a crime,
the Homeland Security
Department confirmed late
Thursday. In at least one case,
the Obama administration
renewed the protective status for a young immigrant
after that persons conviction
in a drug case, a U.S. official
briefed on the arrests said.
One of the eligibility
requirements for the program
is that immigrants not have a
criminal history. The official
spoke on condition of anonymity because this person
was not authorized to discuss
the matter by name.
It was not immediately clear
when 13 of the immigrants were
convicted or what their crimes
were. They were arrested by
U.S. Immigrations and Customs
Enforcement. The answers to
those questions could undermine the integrity of the governments program, since eligibility
is reserved for ambitious, young
immigrants enrolled in school or
who graduated and who would
benefit American society.
officer was shot in the right shoulder, the bullet exiting through his back.
A 32-year-old officer from Webster
Groves was wearing a riot helmet with
the face shield up. He was shot in the
right cheek, just below the eye, and the
bullet lodged behind his ear.
On Thursday night, about 50 people
gathered at a public plaza in downtown
Ferguson near the police station for a
vigil. The group sang spirituals, prayed
for peace and expressed sympathies for
the injured officers.
Tensions have been high in Ferguson
since August and escalated in November
after a St. Louis County grand jury
declined to prosecute Darren Wilson,
the officer who shot Brown. Justice
Department investigators concurred
with that finding in a report released
March 4.
But a separate Justice Department
report released that same day found
racial profiling in the Ferguson police
force, and a municipal court system
driven by profit, largely on the backs of
black and low-income residents.
In the week after the report,
Fergusons court clerk was fired and
the municipal judge, two police officers
and the city manager voluntarily stepped
aside. Wilson resigned in November.
John Gaskin III, a St. Louis community activist, speculated that the shooting was conducted by outside agitators
intent on hijacking attention from peaceful, reform-minded protesters.
Scam
(Continued from page 1)
In 2012, the IRS started working more closely with U.S.
attorneys offices around the country to combat tax refund
fraud by people using stole identities, said Caroline Ciraolo,
acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Departments
tax division. Since then, the tax division has opened nearly
1,000 investigations and brought prosecutions against more
than 1,400 people, Ciraolo told the Senate Finance Committee
hearing.
Given the sophistication of this criminal activity and the
fact that a lot of it comes from overseas, this looks to me like
an emerging type of organized crime, said Sen. Ron Wyden
of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Finance Committee.
The inspector generals office started receiving complaints
about the telephone scam in 2013. Immigrants were the primary target early on, the IGs office said. But the scam has since
become more widespread.
As part of the telephone scam, fake IRS agents call taxpayers, claim they owe taxes, and demand payment using a
prepaid debit card or a wire transfer. Those who refuse are
