IRS scam targets more than 366,000 people

WASHINGTON (AP) Fake IRS agents
have targeted more than 366,000 people with
harassing phone calls demanding payments
and threatening jail in the largest scam of its
kind in the history of the agency, a federal
investigator said Thursday.
More than 3,000 people have fallen for
the ruse since 2013, said Timothy Camus,
a Treasury deputy inspector general for tax
administration. They were conned out of a
total of $15.5 million.
The scam has claimed victims in almost
every state, Camus said. One unidentified
victim lost more than $500,000.
The criminals do not discriminate. They
are calling people everywhere, of all income
levels and backgrounds, Camus told the

Senate Finance Committee at a hearing. The

callers often warned the victims that if they
hung up, local police would come to their
homes to arrest them.
The scam is so widespread that investigators believe there is more than one group of
perpetrators, including some overseas.
Camus said even he received a call from
one of the scammers at his home on a
Saturday. He said he had a stern message for
the caller: Your day will come.
Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., said he got a
similar call, but realized it wasnt a real IRS
agent.
It was a very convincing, convincing
phone call, Isakson said.
So far, two people in Florida have been

arrested, Camus said. They were accused of

being part of a scam that involved people in
call centers in India contacting U.S. taxpayers
and pretending to be IRS agents.
These criminal acts are perpetrated by
thieves hiding behind telephone lines and
computers, preying on honest taxpayers and
robbing the Treasury of tens of billions of
dollars every year, said Sen. Orrin Hatch,
R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Finance
Committee. Taxpayers must be more aware
of the risks and better protected from attack
and these criminals must be found and
brought to justice.
The IRS and the inspector generals office
started warning taxpayers about the scam a
year ago, and it has since ballooned. This

year, it tops the IRS list of Dirty Dozen tax

scams.
Tax scams often increase during tax filing season, and with millions of Americans
preparing their returns ahead of the April 15
deadline, the IRS is seeing many cases of
identity theft and refund fraud.
In recent years the IRS has stepped up
efforts to detect large numbers of tax refunds
going to the same address or bank account.
Using computer filters, the agency identified
more than 517,000 suspicious returns and
blocked $3.1 billion in fraudulent returns,
as of October 2014, Camus said in his testimony.

Law enforcement to

INFORMATION

LIMA St. Patricks
Day has become a big night
out for many people but it is
also becoming a dangerous
night on Americas roadways. That is why local law
enforcement announced they
will be out cracking down
on and arresting drunk drivers this weekend through St.
Patricks Day.
The
Allen
County
Sheriffs Office, the Lima
Police Department, as well
as the Ohio State Highway
Patrol, will have extra
officers on patrol beginning this weekend through
Wednesday.
If you are attending a St.
Patricks Day celebration
and plan on using alcohol:
Designate a sober driver before the party begins
and give that person your
car keys;
Dont starve yourself
before or during the party enjoy the food;
Buzzed driving is
drunk driving - if you have
a buzz, dont even think
about getting behind the
wheel. Ask a sober friend
for a ride home or call a
cab, friend, family member
to come and get you.
Dont press your luck
this St. Patricks Day; drive
sober or get pulled over.
Designate a sober driver in advance before the
festivities begin. If you plan
on using alcohol, never
drive while impaired, never
ride with someone who is
impaired and if you think
they are impaired, never let
your friends drive.
Always buckle up; its
the best defense against
impaired drivers.

Ohio EPA probing rash of farm

manure spills into waterways
TOLEDO (AP) State environmental regulators are investigating more than a dozen farm
manure spills that have seeped into creeks, rivers
and ditches during the past two weeks.
Most of the spills reported to the Ohio
Environmental Protection Agency have been linked
to farmers who had put livestock waste on frozen
and snow-covered fields. The spills come at a time
when state lawmakers are moving toward banning
the practice in the states agriculture belt.
Gov. John Kasich has called for the ban as one
way to reduce the pollutants that are feeding the
annual algae blooms on Lake Erie that contaminated the drinking water for 400,000 people in Ohio
and Michigan last August.
Rising temperatures and melting snow, especially in the last few days, have caused the manure
to run off the fields and pollute waterways in the
western part of Ohio where agriculture dominates
the economy.
Water samples near the spills have found very
high ammonia levels that can harm fish, but so far
there havent been any large-scale fish kills, Ohio

EPA Director Craig Butler said.

The reports of manure washing into streams in
the last week are certainly a significant number
and a cause for concern, he said.
Its a little surprising after having all of the discussion over the past year and hearing that its not
best management practice to do this, Butler said.
Those responsible for the spills could face fines
or be forced to pay the cleanup costs.
Seven manure spills were reported this week in
Darke County, which is just northwest of Dayton
along the Indiana state line and home to many large
poultry farms. Other spills are being investigated in
Paulding, Van Wert, Shelby, Portage and Ashland
counties, according to the state EPA.
This should not happen, said Joe Cornely, a
spokesman for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation.
Its not acceptable.
The bureau, the states largest and most influential agriculture organization, has led a campaign
to encourage farmers not to put manure on frozen
ground while also acknowledging that banning the
practice would be costly for farmers who lack stor-

OIU asks liquor permit holders to

be vigilant during St. Patricks Day
INFORMATION SUBMITTED
COLUMBUS As Ohio liquor permit
holders finalize plans for their annual St.
Patricks Day celebrations, agents with the
Ohio Department of Public Safetys Ohio
Investigative Unit, want patron safety to
top the list.
Many patrons set out to consume green
beer on St. Patricks Day; however, liquor
permit holders must put their safety first
by not serving intoxicated individuals and
discouraging excessive consumption of
alcohol. It is illegal to serve, sell or furnish
alcohol to someone who is intoxicated and
anyone who has not turned 21.
Yes, there is a component of personal responsibility; however, liquor permit holders also have a responsibility to
not serve anyone who is intoxicated,
said Enforcement Commander Eric Wolf.
Patron safety should always be paramount
in liquor permit establishments. Patron
safety starts with vigilant staff.
Keeping patrons safe and ensuring they
are not over-served, should not stop at St.
Patricks Day.
College basketball fans will be crowd-

ing Ohio sports bars to watch hours of

tournament action.
Some indicators the Ohio Department
of Public Safetys Ohio Investigative Unit
suggest bar staff use to determine whether
someone has been over-served include:
Is the individual able to stand and
carry on a conversation without slurring
words?
Has the person ordered or been
served multiple drinks within a small
amount of time?
Has the person become irritable and
begun causing problems?
Is the person having difficulty drinking beverages, resulting in spillage?
Any liquor permit staff found to be in
violation of serving intoxicated or underage individuals can be charged criminally.
In addition, agents may administratively
cite the liquor permit. The administrative
case will be presented to the Ohio Liquor
Control Commission for their consideration. Possible administrative penalties
include fines, suspension or revocation of
the liquor permit.

age for the manure.

The organization this week announced support
for legislation passed in the Ohio House that would
prohibit farmers from dumping manure on frozen
fields or when heavy rain is in the immediate
forecast.
The farm bureau says the bill would allow farmers time to come into compliance. Designing and
constructing storage and paying for it cant be done
overnight, Cornely said.
The state Senate and Kasich have backed plans
that dont include what environmental groups have
called a loophole for farmers in the House measure
that would allow violators to go unpunished.
Rep. Mike Sheehy, a Democrat from the Toledo
suburb of Oregon who began calling for stopping
the spread of manure on frozen ground well before
Toledos water crisis, said the recent manure spills
show that its a problem that needs to be dealt with
now.
Most farmers say they dont do this anyway,
he said. Its not a good practice.

The quiet shepherd in the life of U2

As Bono launched into another mini-sermon on faith, justice and love, Father Jack
Heaslip did what he had always done for U2
-- he stood out of the limelight and prayed.
On this day in 2001, Bono wasnt standing
at a microphone in a packed concert venue.
He had slipped into a private gathering of
staffers from Capitol Hill offices, a strategic
circle of believers who shared his concerns
about poverty, AIDS and oceans of Third
World debt.
God is watching. ... Forget about the
judgment of history. For those of you who
are religious people, you have to think about
the judgment of God, said Bono. And dont
worry about asking God to bless what you
are doing. Look for what God is doing and
get involved in that, because that has already
been blessed.
That last saying -- a Bono standard -- was
a quote drawn from the Anglican priest
standing in the back of the room. As always,
the man who had been U2s behind-thescenes chaplain for decades declined to be
interviewed, but quietly met with people on
the edges of the crowd.
In liner notes accompanying its 2014 album, Songs of Innocence, the band called
Heaslip our North Star, perhaps knowing
that motor neuron disease would soon take

On
Religion
his life at age 71. It was a rare glimpse of
the man the U2 quartet knew as a guidance
counselor and English teacher when they
were boys at Dublins nondenominational
Mount Temple Secondary School. In the
book U2 by U2, Bono described him as
a source of inspiration and calm over our
lives.
Heaslip eventually became an Anglican
priest with his own flock, while frequently
touring with U2. He attended the bands
prayer and Bible study sessions and, on one
occasion, someone recorded his blessing
before the 2001 Elevation tour. He began
with Isaiah 61, as quoted by Jesus.
The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on
me, because he has anointed me to preach
good news to the poor, said Heaslip, before
his own blessing. What we want God to do
tonight is to pour his anointing. And thats

not just a dab on the forehead, thats a rich

anointing of his oil. Were told the oil would
flow down from the top of your head -- and
in my case into your beard -- and down your
front and make a mess. But thats the richness of Gods anointing.
And what I felt God wanted me to do
today was to pour out, in his name, an
anointing on everything to do with this tour
-- everybody, everything. We think of the
band, but we think of every piece of equipment and everyone who works that piece of
equipment, everyone who packs up, everyone who drives a car, everyone who does the
catering, everyone who is responsible for
technology, every joint of wire, every plug,
every soffit, every light. ...
Come, Holy Spirit, and reign. Pour out
your rule and anointing on this tour. Let
nothing be an obstacle. Just melt away anything that is not of you.
Anyone who knew Heaslip recognized
those convictions, noted Mark Rodgers, a
former top Republican aide in the Senate,
who worked closely with U2 on social-justice issues. Before each concert, the priest
would walk through the arena, blessing the
stage, the equipment and the grandstands
that would soon be packed.
During shows he would often stand with

his back to the stage, praying for the people

in the crowd and, literally, everything that
was going on, said Rodgers. He didnt care
that no one saw him doing it. ... This was
part of his ministry, for the band and for everyone there.
Father Kenneth Tanner, a Charismatic
Episcopal Church pastor near Detroit who
knew and corresponded with Heaslip, noted
that -- at the Feb. 25 funeral for their chaplain -- Bono once again read from Isaiah 61.
Even though Heaslip had been with U2
through many changes, including an early
crisis when tensions between faith and art
almost split the band, he never talked about
U2 as this big famous band, said Tanner.
The ties there were not about him knowing U2. For him, it was all about those four
boys he knew so long ago and all they went
through to become the men they are now. It
was all about helping those four guys.

St. Johns Buettner, Elidas Hunter

advance in state wrestling tournament
BY LARRY HEIING
DHI Media Correspondent
news@delphosherald.com
COLUMBUS The 78th annual OHSAA state wrestling tournament kicked off Thursday at the
Ohio State Jerome Schottenstein
Center. Seven local wrestlers participated in the three-day meet with
the common theme of confidence
and being in control.
Delphos St. Johns senior Wes
Buettner dominated Tinoras Alex
Hinajosa for 16-1 tech fall victory.
I got a nice takedown in the
first period and that quickly eliminated some nerves, Buettner said.
I wasnt content with my performance down here last year and just
kept working in the match until I
got the tech fall. I plan on giving
everything I got to do what I do best
to do the best I can.
Buettner led 8-0 with a pair of
near falls in the first period and
extended his lead to 13-1. Buettner
finished the match the way it started
with a deep shot to seal the win.
Brett Vonderwell is the first
sophomore from Delphos St. Johns
to make it to the state tournament
since Brian Merschman in 2008.
Vonderwells nerves didnt get any
relief as he faced 45-1 Dakota Mays
from Nelsonville in the first round

St. Johns senior Wes Buettner defeated Tinoras Alex Hinojosa 16-1 to
move onto day two. (DHI Media/Larry Heiing)
and lost in a tech fall.
Vonderwell looked more comfortable in his second match
against another wrestler with an
impressive record, Rootstowns
Luke Sorboro (46-3), but couldnt
generate any offense falling 16-2.
Vonderwells future looks bright for
Blue Jays Coach Derek Sterling
and Vonderwell ends his successful
season with a 41-13 record.
Elidas Blaine Hunter finished
8th last year and is looking for high

placement this year.

Last year Blaine was content
with his finish at state because he
was a sophomore, but this year
he has a different mindset, commented Bulldog head coach Brady
Overholt. With state experience,
the nerves werent a factor and he
controlled his first match.
Hunter scored a takedown of
Urbanas Jaylin Cameron seconds
into the match as the two traded
reversals as Hunter led 4-2 after

the first period. The final two periods were scoreless but physical as
Hunter suffered a bloody nose and
cut above the eye.
Cameron was a good wrestler
and it was huge to get the first points
of the match, Hunter explained.

and Tyler Showalter are both making return visits to the Schott this
year.

Ohio MLB Spring Training

Associated Press
Reds 12, Diamondbacks 4
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Brandon
Phillips and Brayan Pena each had three
hits Thursday and the Cincinnati Reds
beat the Arizona Diamondback 12-4.
Phillips doubled twice. Pena broke
out of an 0-for-12 start to his spring
training with three RBIs.
Reds starter Mike Leake pitched
three shutout innings, giving up two hits.
He hasnt allowed a run in five innings
this spring.
Arizona starter Allen Webster, among
a host of candidates trying to win one
of the spots available in the rotation,
gave up four runs and seven hits in 2
2-3 innings.
Actor and comedian Will Ferrell
made the game his third stop
on a one-day, five-game whirlwind tour of Arizona spring
training. He played third base
for the Reds and left field for
the Diamondbacks, helping to
raise money for charity while
filming an HBO special.
Ferrell had three balls come his way
in the outfield, one that went for a triple
and two for doubles.
Todd Frazier went 2 for 4 with three
RBIs and Jason Bourgeois and Brennan
Boesch each had two hits and scored
twice for the Reds.
Thats a nice offensive explosion
there and fun to watch, Reds manager
Bryan Price said. Its nice to be able to
create some separation early in the game
and keep the lead and have some of your
big guys swinging the bat well.
SIDE SHOW
Josh Collmenter, Arizonas opening
day starter, allowed a run in three innings
in a B game on a side field before the
game. Shortstop Chris Owings tested
his surgically-repaired left shoulder by
playing five innings of defense. He
looked healthy, thats the main thing
with him right now, manager Chip
Hale said. Well see how he feels
(Friday) and get him back in there for
the Saturday day-night doubleheader.
SING IT
Craig Wayne Boyd, winner of Season
7 of the TV show The Voice, sang the
national anthem before the game.
STARTING TIME
Reds: Mike Leake continued his
tuneup for the regular-season starting
rotation with three shutout innings. He
allowed two hits, struck out two and
walked one and is unscored upon in five
innings this spring. Hes been working
really hard on his changeup and making
that kind of a priority pitch, Price said.
Hes a stabilizer on our staff. There was
a lot of teams that were interested in him

in the offseason and we just felt like he

was a piece we couldnt move.
Diamondbacks: Allen Webster is
among a host of candidates for one of
the spots available in the Arizona starting rotation, and he didnt help himself
much on Thursday. Webster was shelled
for three runs and five hits, all wellstruck balls. The first four Reds he faced
reached base with hits in the first inning.
Webster settled down for his next two
innings, but was charged with four runs
and seven hits for the day. Hes allowed
six earned runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3
innings this spring after going 2 2-3 on
Thursday.
I was trying to get ahead of batters,
and they jumped on all the first or second pitches, Webster said. If Id go
back, Id throw a little more off-speed
on first pitches.
TRAINERS ROOM
Diamondbacks: C Oscar
Hernandez underwent surgery
to remove the hamate bone in
his left wrist on Thursday
morning, and he could be
out for months. Hernandez
left Tuesdays game with pain in the
wrist. . Closer Addison Reed had a positive bullpen session Wednesday, and he
could make to five to seven appearances
before spring training ends, Hale said.
Reed is coming off shoulder soreness. .
RHP Matt Stites (right elbow soreness)
threw a bullpen session and has yet to
appear in a game.
UP NEXT
Reds: RHP Jason Marquis gets the
start against the Los Angeles Dodgers in
Glendale, his third of the spring. Closer
Aroldis Chapman is also scheduled
to pitch.
Diamondbacks: RHP Jeremy
Hellickson makes his second
spring training start after a successful Diamondbacks debut Sunday.
He faces the Cleveland Indians in
Goodyear.

Royals 10, Indians 5

GOODYEAR, Ariz. Salvador
Perez got three hits and the Kansas City
Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 10-5
Thursday.
Paulo Orlando hit a two-run triple
off Cleveland reliever Bryan Shaw.
Orlando, an outfielder from Brazil, also
had a single and an RBI forceout.
Shaw was up with everything and
he paid for it, Indians manager Terry
Francona said. When the lights go on,
Ill put my money on Shaw.
Roberto Perez homered off Royals
starter Danny Duffy. Carlos Santana
hit a two-run homer off reliever Casey
Coleman. Michael Bourn had two hits
for Cleveland.

It wasnt great, but it wasnt as bad

as it looks, Duffy said after giving up
three runs in three innings.
Bourn was hampered by left hamstring problems last season. He is hitting
.538 so far this spring.
This is my ninth year, Bourn said.
You look for motivation in these games.
I havent had to back off anything. I am
trying to simplify things and stay on
top.
Indians starter Nick Maronde allowed
a run and four hits in three innings.
TRAINERS ROOM
Royals: LHP Tim Collins had Tommy
John surgery and will miss the season.
He will return home and rejoin the team
later this month to begin rehab.
Indians: Zach Walters left the game
with a right abdominal strain after fouling off a pitch in the fifth inning. The
versatile Walters had a rib injury late
last season. OF Ryan Raburn slipped
between first and second running out a
double in the first inning. He stayed in
for one more at-bat but left with discomfort in his left knee. He had knee
surgery last September. Nick Swisher
participated in a simulated game and
faced Marc Rzepczynski. Swisher (knee
surgery) is expected to appear in games
in mid-March. Josh Tomlin threw a
bullpen session. He was scratched on
Sunday with shoulder fatigue and is
scheduled to pitch Saturday against the
Dodgers.
UP NEXT
Royals: RHP Chris Young is scheduled to pitch on Friday. Young, who
won the 2014 Comeback Player of the
Year Award with Seattle, signed with
the Royals last Saturday. RHP
Edinson Volquez will start
against Oakland.
Indians: The Indians have a
pair of split-squad games. LHP
T.J. House will start against the
Cubs, and RHP Zach McAllister
will start against Arizona.
STARTING TIME
Royals: Duffy spent most of last season in the rotation. This spring, he has
the luxury of refining his skills.
My last time (against Cincinnati),
they hit line drives at people, so that
outing wasnt as good as it looked,
Duffy said. Im results-based, but we
are all working on things. I need to put
people away.
Indians: Reigning Cy Young Award
winner Corey Kluber threw a simulated
game. We wanted to back him off a little, Francona said. We wanted him to
work on things without worrying about
the fans and umpires. He pitched three
scoreless innings, allowing four hits and
no walks while striking out five.

Davis chips in to
take lead at Valspar
Championship
Associated Press
PALM HARBOR, Fla. Brian Davis takes pride in his
short game, which saved him from a rough finish Thursday and
gave him the lead in the Valspar Championship.
Coming off back-to-back bogeys, Davis chipped
in from 25 feet on the ninth green at Innisbrook for a
6-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead over past champion Sean OHair and Ricky Barnes after the opening
round.
For the 40-year-old Davis, it was the perfect finish to
go with what had been an ideal
start. Starting on the back nine of
the Copperhead course, he missed
three birdie chances inside 15 feet
and still went out in 30. There
wasnt a hint of trouble until a
three-putt from 45 feet on No. 7
and a poor chip at the par-3 eighth
that led to bogey.
And right when he thought he
had hit a good approach on No. 9,
he heard nothing.
I expected a clap and nobody
clapped, he said.
His chip came out with more
Davis
over-spin because of the grain in the
grass and might have gone about 6
feet by the hole except that it struck the pin.
Delighted, the Englishman said.
OHair got even more evidence that his game is turning
around by making eight birdies in the morning for a 66.
Barnes, playing in the afternoon, was tied for the lead until he
three-putted the par-3 17th from 35 feet and missed a 12-foot
birdie putt on the last hole.
Henrik Stenson, at No. 3 the highest-ranked player in the
field, made his debut at Innisbrook by dressing in the same
colors as the volunteers, though it wasnt intentional, and none
of the volunteers had matching pants to go with his periwinkle
shirt.
He didnt like the swing he had on the range, though he hit
enough good iron shots early on to get by. Stenson hit wedge
into the par-4 ninth for a final birdie and a bogey-free 67. He
was in a group that included Justin Thomas and Puerto Rico
Open winner Alex Cejka.
Thomas opened with nine straight pars, a bogey on the par-5
first hole, and then five birdies.
Stenson played with Adam Scott, who made four
straight bogeys on his back nine that ruined a good round.
He had a birdie on the final hole for a 71. Also in the group
was Jordan Spieth, slowed by a double bogey in his round
of 70.
Fell asleep out there for about 30 minutes, Scott said.
The Copperhead course didnt have a lot of bite with its
green, soft conditions. Thomas was among those who had
mud on the golf ball, which led to his bogey at No. 1. It still
was the sturdy test that makes it so popular. Even without
much wind and a mostly overcast sky, the course average
was about 71.4
The golf course was there no wind and fairly soft so
you have to try to make your score today if you could, Davis
said.
It wasnt there for John Daly. He opened with a double
bogey when he three-putted from 5 feet. He later four-putted
for triple bogey on the 14th hole. A birdie on the final hole
gave him an 81, but there was a sliver of good news at the end
of his long day. He wasnt selected for drug testing.
No, thats tomorrow, said Daly, with a grin.
He said on his SiriusXM radio show Tuesday that night
the PGA Tour didnt have random testing because he has been
picked at Innisbrook the last six years.
OHair won at Innisbrook in 2008, though he has fallen on
lean times. He has had to earn his card at the Web.com Tour
Finals each of the last two years.

Gordon eases up on
Lady Green stifle Blue
NASCAR after meeting
Jackets in Regional semis over safety concerns
By SCHUYLER DIXON
Associated Press

By JIM METCALFE
DHI Media Sports Editor
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
ELIDA Ottoville girls basketball
mentor Dave Kleman felt prior to the
game his team was facing a mirror
image of itself Thursday night in the
first semifinal of the Elida Fieldhouse
Division IV Regionals New Riegel
and he figured execution would be
the key to the outcome.
At least the Lady Big Green didnt
knock themselves out in the process but
they did out-execute the Lady Yellow
Jackets 52-34 to move on to Saturday
nights finals at 7:30 p.m., with a trip to
Columbus at stake.
Their foe is the 6-5-led Kamryn
Troike and Fostoria St. Wendelin, who
held off a furious late rally by Pettisville
to record a 41-38 triumph.
In the opener, the start was the key.
The Lady Green (19-7) led from the
start, thanks to a drive to the basket by
Brooke Mangas (8 points, 3 steals) at
7:28. Their tough man-to-man defense
neutralized the Lady Jackets (20-5) in
limiting them to 3-of-8 shooting and
forcing four turnovers (10 total) in the
opener. On the opposite end against
the Jackets 1-2-2 zone, they came out
en fuego in slamming down 8-of-13
attempts, with senior Annie Lindeman
(game-high 16 markers - 4 bombs - 7
boards, 4 blocks) downing eight markers (2 triples). When Alexis Thorbahn
went window on a 3-ball from the left
wing that beat the horn, Ottovilles lead
was 19-7.
The start is all about how well weve
been playing the last two-plus months of
the season. We are really sharing the ball
well offensively, Kleman observed. It
all goes back to the fact that we were
trying to fit together four classes in a
cohesive unit and it took time for that
to really click for these girls. We really
focus on trying to share the ball and it
finally came together and you saw the
result today, especially at the start.
Ottoville continued to apply the
defensive vise to their foe in period
two and played it even better, keeping
New Riegel out of the paint and stymieing them to 2-of-12 shooting. Ottoville
wasnt quite as sharp offensively
3-of-8 but they still added to their
lead. When Bridget Landin (10 counters, 10 boards) sank 1-of-2 tosses at 27.1
ticks showing, their lead stood at 28-12.
Bridget is a freshman and we knew
this summer we had a good one; she
played with the varsity all summer. Its
not that she piles up the stats offensively but she is quick at 6-0, Kleman
continued. You look at our freshmen
and sophomores and they have won all
through their years. Our JV team only
lost two games and the way we run our
practices we mix them all together
those youngsters really made our varsity
work hard this work and got us ready.
Our eighth-grade team was unbeaten,
too, so I like our future; our present isnt
bad, either.
If New Riegel was ever going to
make a serious run at their foe, they
needed to slice the deficit substantially
in the third period by heating up offensively and turning over the Big Green
at the other end. Neither happened.
In fact, Ottoville when they didnt
turn it over four times in the canto (13
all told) canned 6-of-8 shots, with
Lindeman and Landwehr netting five
each. New Riegel couldnt heat up
4-of-11. Ottoville led by 44-20 on a
layin by Landwehr at 57 ticks before
Kara Scherger (9 counters, 5 assists, 3
thefts) drove for a deuce at 50 ticks to
reduce the deficit to 44-22, Ottoville.
The closest the Yellow Jackets could
get in the finale was the margin of victory, with both coaches taking advantage
of the opportunity to give their seniors
a chance to come off the floor to a hand
from their partisans for New Riegel,
for the final time and play their deeper reserves more.
Ottoville finished 12-of-21 from
2-point range (57.14 percent), 6-of-12
downtown (50%) and 10-of-19 from 15
feet (52.63%). They snatched 29 boards
(7 offensive); handed out 14 assists

game against New Riegel. The Lady Big Green won the match 52-34 to move on
to Regional Finals on Saturday. (DHI Media/Kenny Poling)
(6 by Alicia Honigford); nabbed seven
steals; and added eight fouls.
Defensively, the key was depth
against their point guard (Scherger),
Kleman added. We rotated people on
her all night: Bridget, Alexis, Alicia
and Haley. I think we wore her down.
Quickness is a great thing when you
have a lot of it.
New Riegel totaled 14-of-33 2-pointers (42.42%), 1-of-9 beyond the arc
(11.11%) and 3-of-5 singles (60%).
They tracked down 20 rebounds (6
offensive); gave over nine assists; had
six steals; and added 17 fouls.
In the nightcap, the Mohawks (23-4)
used a 15-point, 13-rebound, 2-block
night from Troike to hold on after taking
a 14-point lead early in the fourth period
and the Lady Blackbirds (24-2) coming
within 40-38 late in the game.
A free throw by Allie Rutter (14
markers with 8.7 ticks left helped seal
the deal.
FSW finished 16-of-33 inside the
arc (48.48%), 1-of-2 outside (50%)
and 6-of-14 from the line (42.86%).
They seized 30 caropms (9 offensive) as
Rutter and Hailee Burns had five each;
dished out nine assists (4 by Burns); six
steals; 12 errors; and 16 fouls.
Pettisville ended up 6-of-25 from
2-point range (24%), 6-of-19 beyond the
arc (31.58%) and 8-of-13 from charity
(61.54%) as Mikala Avina had a gamehigh 21 (5 bombs). They grabbed 29
boards (14 offensive) as Dana Fricke
secured 12; six assists (Jordyn Pursel
2); nine steals (Fricke 5 and Avina 4); 10
miscues; and 17 fouls.

Golf
(Continued from page 6)
The last two years have been disappointing for me,
OHair said. I lost really everything. I lost my ball-striking
and kind of lost my mind, lost confidence as far as how I play
the game because I like to hit a lot of different shots and I got
very swing-oriented.
DIVOTS: Course owners said Thursday the Copperhead
course will go through an extensive restoration this summer,
primarily to replace the grass in the fairways and rough, to
rebuild the greens and reshape some of the bunkers to the original Larry Packard design. Hopefully, they dont mess around
with the design too much because I think weve got a really
good golf course here, Scott said. Padraig Harrington, in
his first start since winning the Honda Classic, opened with
a 76. Georgia Tech senior Ollie Schniederjans, in his first
PGA Tour event, made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole
for an even-par 71.
TSHWANE OPEN

Madsen closed with a hole-in-one and an eagle for a 7-under
63 and a share of the first-round lead in the Tshwane Open.
Madsen spun his tee shot back into the hole on No. 8, his
17th, for his ace. He eagled the par-5 ninth after reaching the
green in two.
Englands David Horsey joined Madsen atop the leaderboard at Pretoria Country Club. South Africas Wallie Coetsee
and Australias Brett Rumford shot 64.
WORLD LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP
HAINAN, China Defending champion Inbee Park of
South Korea and Becky Morgan of Wales shared the firstround lead at 4-under 69 in the Ladies European Tours World
Ladies Championship.
The second-ranked Park eagled the par-5 18th and had
four birdies and two bogeys on Mission Hills Blackstone
Course. She won the HSBC Womens Champions on Sunday
in Singapore for her 13th LPGA Tour title.
Norways Suzann Pettersen, the 2013 winner, was tied for
14th after a 73.

DALLAS Jeff Gordon eased up on NASCAR after discussing track safety issues with officials behind closed doors.
Gordon said Thursday he may have prematurely questioned
NASCARs plans for installations of SAFER barriers after
hitting a concrete wall two weekends ago in Atlanta. The energy-absorbing walls are common at tracks but not installed in
every place a car might crash.
Maybe that was me getting a little bit ahead of myself as far as what
the phased plan was, Gordon said.
All I can tell you is that everybody
is doing everything they possibly
can right now to speed that process
up and get these walls covered. And
thats what Im most happy about
right now.
The popular driver of the No.
24 Chevrolet said Tuesdays meeting
with officials was informative.
Gordon spoke at an event in downtown Dallas honoring Gordon during
Gordon
his final full season as a Sprint Cup
driver. The first of two Texas races in
NASCARs top series is April 11 in north Fort Worth, about 35
miles from the Dallas street where Gordon left a few tire marks
in some burnouts during a grand entrance.
SAFER barriers were one of the many safety initiatives that
came about after Dale Earnhardts death in 2001 in an accident
on the last lap of the Daytona 500.
The soft walls, a combination of steel and foam, debuted
in 2002 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and were gradually
added to tracks the next year and are currently installed in
some form at every track used by NASCARs top series.
Theres been increased scrutiny on the absence of SAFER
barriers since Kyle Busch broke his right leg and left foot at
Daytona last month.
Gordon said the focus of his meeting this week was about
plans at Daytona and other tracks to get SAFER barriers in all
the spots that NASCAR engineers believe theyre needed.
Its a time-consuming thing. It doesnt happen overnight,
said Gordon, who had a hard hit into an unprotected wall in
2008 at Las Vegas that led track officials to install a SAFER
barrier in that spot. Its a top priority to really make the tracks
even safer than they are today and do it in as timely a fashion
as whats possible from their suppliers.
Steve ODonnell, NASCARs top racing development
officer, was part of the meeting and has said in the past that
the series will continue to collaborate with all of our track
partners to find the best safety solutions.
Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage said
slightly less than half of the outside wall has the SAFER barrier on the 1 1/2-mile high-banked track. He said Texas hasnt
been part of the discussion for more barriers.
The last thing you want to do is have anybody get hurt,
particularly a guy like Jeff whos so important to you,
Gossage said. Hes been finding walls that nobodys ever
found in their history of these places.
Gordon has been on the pole twice in the first three races
this season but hasnt finished higher than 18th. He wrecked
at Daytona and Atlanta, and was forced to the back of the field
in a backup car in Las Vegas after an accident in the closing
minutes of the final practice session.
Its not fun to start out like this, Gordon added. Luckily
weve gotten those two poles because the poles have kept the
confidence there. Weve had some good moments throughout
the races, but were going to have to follow those up with
results to keep that confidence high.

CLEVELAND The Browns were having quarterback

issues the last time Thad Lewis played for them. Nothings
changed.
Lewis, one of 22 quarterbacks to start for Clevelands
franchise since 1999, signed a 1-year deal with the team on
Thursday. A career backup, Lewis started the 2012 season
finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hes been to Buffalo and
Houston in the interim, and now comes back to a place where
quarterbacks come and go on a regular basis.
Lewis brings depth to the problematic position and its not out of
the question that he could find himself going from backup to behind
center. The Browns recently signed
veteran Josh McCown, their probable starter who went 1-10 last season with Tampa Bay, to a 3-year contract. The club isnt sure
what the future holds for Johnny Manziel, a first-round draft
pick in 2014 who checked into a rehab facility on Jan. 28 for
treatment for an undisclosed problem and remains under care.
The 30-year-old Lewis has also been reunited with Browns
coach Mike Pettine. The pair worked together in Buffalo
in 2013, when Lewis started five games after replacing EJ
Manuel.
In his lone start for the Browns, Lewis completed 22 of 32
passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. He became expandable
by the Texans after the club signed Ryan Mallett and former
Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer, who signed a 2-year, $10. 5
million contract.
Lewis signing doesnt mean the Browns, who have been
one of the NFLs least active teams in free agency, have completed their quest for a quarterback.
With two first-round picks Nos. 12 and 19 in next
months draft, the club could be positioned to make a run at one
of the top QB prospects, including Oregon quarterback Marcus
Mariota. On Thursday, new Browns quarterbacks coach Kevin
OConnell attended Mariotas pro day in Carlsbad, California.
OConnell probably didnt see anything he didnt already
know about Mariota since he trained the Heisman Trophy winner before accepting his job with Cleveland.
Coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer did
not attend Mariotas workout, which drew some of the leagues
top decision-makers. Its likely the Browns will conduct their
own session with Mariota, rated as the second-best QB in this
years class behind Florida States Jameis Winston.

Two people familiar with the deal

Murray agreed Thursday to a 5-year

Both sources spoke to The Associated

Murray hadnt officially signed the contract.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Wearing a gray suit, white shirt and

on Thursday afternoon.
Less than two hours later, the Eagles

Cowboys star receiver Dez Bryant
tweeted: @DeMarcoMurray I wish you
would have stayed but I understand your
decision Congrats bro you deserve
it -
Murray will replace 2-time All-Pro
LeSean McCoy, the NFLs rushing leader in 2013. Coach Chip Kelly traded
McCoy to Buffalo last week in a flurry
of stunning moves.
Mathews agreed to his deal
Wednesday and came in for a physical
on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Murray turned
down a 4-year, $16 million offer from
the Cowboys last fall and went on to
become the AP Offensive Player of the
Year. He played 16 games for the first
time in 2014 after missing games with
injuries in each of his first three years.
Murray played the final four games
last season, including the playoffs,
after breaking his left hand in a win at
Philadelphia. He tied Seattles Marshawn
Lynch for the NFL lead with 13 touchdowns rushing. Murray has been to the
Pro Bowl the last two seasons. He had
1,121 yards rushing and nine TDs in 14
games in 2013.
Bills re-sign Easley and land freeagent QB Taylor
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. After
making a number of high-profile splashes, the Buffalo Bills have moved on
to addressing secondary needs in free
agency.
Receiver and special teams mainstay
Marcus Easley is back in Buffalo after
signing a 4-year contract on Thursday,
two days into the NFLs signing period.
The Bills also signed free-agent quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who spent the past
four seasons backing up Joe Flacco in
Baltimore. Taylor signed a 2-year contract.
Easley was Buffalos fourth-round
pick in the 2010 draft but missed his first
two seasons because of injuries.
He made his NFL debut in 2012 after
being cut and re-signed by the Bills.
Chiefs release former Pro Bowl
WR Dwayne Bowe
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Two years
ago, the Chiefs were so desperate to
keep Dwayne Bowe on the roster that
they gave him a 5-year deal that made
him one of the leagues highest-paid
wide receivers.
Turns out that he was going to be
paid a bit too well.
The Chiefs released their former
first-round pick on Thursday, unwilling
to take the $14 million hit against the
salary cap that Bowe carried this season.

The move came one day after the

Chiefs wrapped up a $55 million, 5-year
deal with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin,
who was drafted by Chiefs coach Andy
Reid in Philadelphia.
With his sometimes flighty personality, Bowe became a fan favorite in Kansas
City. The seats in Arrowhead Stadium
were often filled with people wearing
his No. 82 jersey and fans would line up
for hours along the barricades at training
camp to get his autograph.
Bowe never seemed to be a good fit
in Reids offense, though, and
his production has been trending downward the past couple
of year. He still had 60 catches
for 754 yards last season but
part of a wide receiver corps
that failed to catch a touchdown pass.
The 30-year-old was a firstround draft pick out of LSU
and went on to start 112 of
his 118 games in Kansas City.
He had 532 catches for 7,155
yards, third-most in franchise history,
and his 2010 season 72 catches,
1,162 yards and 15 TDs earned him a
spot in the Pro Bowl.
Yet for all his success on the field,
there were constant stumbles away from
it.
He made questionable comments to
a magazine a few years ago about womanizing that allegedly occurred at team
hotels. He then offered an apology that
went awry when he referred to the Hunt
family that owns the Chiefs as the
Clarks a reference to Clark Hunt, its
chief executive.
In November 2013, he was arrested in a suburb of Kansas City on
charges of speeding and possession
of marijuana, shortly before a pivotal AFC West showdown against
Denver. He later pleaded guilty to
amended charges of defective equipment and littering and his attorney
said there was no admission of guilt
for the marijuana charge, which was
dismissed.
The Chiefs also acquired former Pro
Bowl offensive guard Ben Grubbs from
the Saints for a fifth-round pick in this
years draft, upgrading their questionable offensive line while giving New
Orleans some roster flexibility.
The Saints also recently released
starting middle linebacker Curtis Lofton
as part of an effort to gain the financial flexibility and draft picks needed
to overhaul a squad that went 7-9 last
season and ranked 31st in the NFL on
defense.
AP source: Jets sign Antonio
Cromartie to 4-year deal
NEW YORK The band is getting
back together in the New York Jets
secondary.
Cornerback Antonio Cromartie
agreed to terms with the Jets on a
4-year contract, worth $32 million in
base salary, a person familiar with the
deal told The Associated Press. The
move Thursday comes a day after New
York finalized a deal to bring Darrelle
Revis back on a 5-year, $70 million
contract.
Cromarties deal can have a maximum value of $35 million, according to
the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team
had not announced the move.
Cromartie and Revis played together
with the Jets from 2010-12.
The Jets also re-signed guard Willie
Colon to a 1-year deal on Thursday
and brought back long snapper Tanner
Purdum on a 2-year contract.

Teammate Showalter was not as fortunate in his opening match battling an

ankle injury and 4-2 deficit in the first
period. The Raiders senior fought back
to even the score at 6 before falling 9 to
7. Showalter bounced back in his second
match with a pin of Mitchell Davidson
in 1:44.
Im just trying to get to the podium
in my final year. I lost to Davidson 6 to
5 earlier in the year and glad to beat him
on the big stage, Showlalter said.
Also making his second appearance at
state was Adas Austin Windle. Windle
placed seventh last year and faced elimination from this years tournament
after dropping his first match to Chance
Sonnerberg of Van Buren. Trailing 4-0
entering in his second match entering
the final period, Windle scored with a
reversal and a take down for a come
from behind 7-6 victory.
I wasnt discouraged when trailing
because Ive been in that spot before,
Windle explained. I knew that my
opponent was trying to muscle me and I
knew that I could get my offense going
because he was getting tired.
Paulding senior Adam Deatrick also
bounced back from a opening round loss
to move to day two. Deatrick scored first
with a take down of Coldwaters Jake
Schmidt and landed a reversal to lead
8-3 after two periods. In the final period,

added defensive help from the free-agent

market Thursday by signing defensive
end Adrian Clayborn and cornerback
Phillip Adams.
Adams will provide depth behind
Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford and
Robert McClain. Clayborn could provide immediate help as a starter if he
can avoid more injuries after playing in
only a little more than half of his teams
games in his first four seasons.
Clayborn, a first-round pick by Tampa
Bay in 2011, played in only one game in
2014 due to a torn biceps.
He had six sacks and
ranked fourth in the NFL
with 19 tackles for loss
with the Buccaneers in
2013. His 14 run stuffs
in 2013 tied for the NFL
lead, according to STATS.
Atlanta also has interest in Titans free-agent
defensive end Derrick
Morgan, the former
Georgia Tech standout.
Morgan visited the Falcons facility
Wednesday.
Ravens retain RB Forsett, who
agrees to 3-year deal
OWINGS MILLS, Md. Justin
Forsett agreed to terms Thursday on
a 3-year contract with the Baltimore
Ravens, who keep their leading rusher
from 2014 after losing several key free
agents earlier in the week.
The 29-year-old Forsett is coming
off the finest season of his 7-year career.
Thrust into a starting role after the
Ravens released Ray Rice, Forsett shed
his journeyman label to run for 1,266
yards and eight touchdowns.
He started 14 games, doubling the
amount of career starts he had coming
into the season. Forsett also had 40
carries in two playoff games, running
for 169 yards, and was selected to his
first Pro Bowl after replacing an injured
Arian Foster.
Free agent J.T. Thomas gives
Giants depth at all LB spots
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. When
the struggling New York Giants blew a
21-point and lost to the Jacksonville
Jaguars last season, co-owner John Mara
felt like firing everyone on the team.
Months later, something good came
out of the loss to a team that until that
game had one win. The Giants got a
glimpse of linebacker J.T. Thomas.
Thomas was one of five players New York signed in this opening week of free agency. The NFC
East team confirmed the signings of Thomas, fellow linebacker Jonathan Casillas, running back
Shane Vereen, return man/receiver
Dwayne Harris and offensive tackle
Marshall Newhouse late Wednesday
night.
Thomas, who can play all the linebacker spots, had a career-best 12 tackles and recovered a fumble for a touchdown against the Giants.
He signed a 3-year, $12 million contract.
Raiders sign free agent S Nate
Allen
ALAMEDA, Calif. The Oakland
Raiders added another new starter to their
defense, signing former Philadelphia
safety Nate Allen to a 4-year contract on
Thursday to fill the hole created when
Tyvon Branch was released.
General
manager
Reggie
McKenzie has been busy to start the
free agency period, having already
added new starting defensive tackle
Dan Williams and middle linebacker
Curtis Lofton, as well as linebacker
Malcolm Smith, to a defense that
allowed the most points in the NFL
last season.

Description

St. Johns Brett Vonderwell became the first Blue Jay sophomore to wrestle in
the state tournament in seven years. Vonderwell lost to Rootstowns Luke Sorboro. (DHI Media/Larry Heiing)
Deatrick scored an escape and another
reversal for the 11-5 victory.
That early takedown made me feel
confident and I knew I could do it,
Deatrick said. I wrestled my match in
the second round after failing to do that

in the first because I gained confidence in

my shots. This is big for me and Paulding
High School because this is the first time
a Panther has won down here since 2008.
Wrestling continues today at 10 a.m.
with championship quarter finals.

Police, other groups try to tamp Let
announces plans for Frozen 2
down tensions in Ferguson
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) With measured remarks and a conciliatory tone,
police, political leaders and civil-rights
activists on Thursday sought to tamp
down tensions after two police officers
were shot in front of the Ferguson Police
Department during a protest.
The officers were quickly released
from the hospital, but St. Louis County
Police Chief Jon Belmar said they could
have easily been killed and called the
attack an ambush. Several people
were taken in for questioning after a
SWAT team converged on a Ferguson
home near the shooting site, but they
were later released, and no arrests were
made.
The shootings marked the first time
in more than seven months of tension
in Ferguson that officers were shot at a
protest, and the bloodshed threatened to
inflame the already fraught relationship
between police and protesters just as
the city seeks reforms in the wake of
a withering Justice Department report
on racial bias in its law-enforcement
practices.
The attack also seemed to create
another layer of race-related mistrust
after a week in which an unarmed young
black man was killed by a white officer
in Madison, Wisconsin, and a University
of Oklahoma fraternity chapter was
thrown off campus after a video surfaced showing members singing a racist
chant.

Immigrants
arrested in sweep
BY ALICIA A.
CALDWELL
Associated Press

WASHINGTON Federal
agents in a sweep targeting the
most dangerous criminal immigrants arrested 15 people who
have been allowed to remain in
the U.S. under President Barack
Obamas executive action
intended to protect children
who came to the U.S. years
ago with their parents, The
Associated Press has learned.
Fourteen of the 15 had
been convicted of a crime,
the Homeland Security
Department confirmed late
Thursday. In at least one case,
the Obama administration
renewed the protective status for a young immigrant
after that persons conviction
in a drug case, a U.S. official
briefed on the arrests said.
One of the eligibility
requirements for the program
is that immigrants not have a
criminal history. The official
spoke on condition of anonymity because this person
was not authorized to discuss
the matter by name.
It was not immediately clear
when 13 of the immigrants were
convicted or what their crimes
were. They were arrested by
U.S. Immigrations and Customs
Enforcement. The answers to
those questions could undermine the integrity of the governments program, since eligibility

Obama took to Twitter to relay his

prayers to the officers and to denounce
violence against police. Path to justice
is one all of us must travel together,
Obama wrote, signing the tweet with his
initials to indicate the president personally composed it.
Attorney General Eric Holder said
the gunman was a damn punk who
was trying to sow discord in an area
that was trying to get its act together,
trying to bring together a community
that had been fractured for too long.
The shots were fired early Thursday
just as a small crowd of protesters began
to break up after a late-night demonstration that unfolded hours after the
resignation of Ferguson Police Chief
Tom Jackson.
The shots were believed to come
from a handgun across the street from
the police department, which has been a
national focal point since the fatal Aug.
9 shooting of Michael Brown, who was
black and unarmed, by a white police
officer.
The gunman may have fired from
up to 120 yards away, a distance longer
than a football field. But with a line of
roughly 20 officers standing in front of
the building, the shooter did not have
to be particularly accurate to hit two of
them, Belmar said.
Were lucky by Gods grace we
didnt lose two officers last night, he
said.
A 41-year-old St. Louis County

officer was shot in the right shoulder, the bullet exiting through his back.
A 32-year-old officer from Webster
Groves was wearing a riot helmet with
the face shield up. He was shot in the
right cheek, just below the eye, and the
bullet lodged behind his ear.
On Thursday night, about 50 people
gathered at a public plaza in downtown
Ferguson near the police station for a
vigil. The group sang spirituals, prayed
for peace and expressed sympathies for
the injured officers.
Tensions have been high in Ferguson
since August and escalated in November
after a St. Louis County grand jury
declined to prosecute Darren Wilson,
the officer who shot Brown. Justice
Department investigators concurred
with that finding in a report released
March 4.
But a separate Justice Department
report released that same day found
racial profiling in the Ferguson police
force, and a municipal court system
driven by profit, largely on the backs of
black and low-income residents.
In the week after the report,
Fergusons court clerk was fired and
the municipal judge, two police officers
and the city manager voluntarily stepped
aside. Wilson resigned in November.
John Gaskin III, a St. Louis community activist, speculated that the shooting was conducted by outside agitators
intent on hijacking attention from peaceful, reform-minded protesters.

Fresh problems for the Secret Service

WASHINGTON (AP) The latest
in a string of baffling missteps by the
Secret Service prompted fresh questions
Thursday about whether the Obama
administration has done enough to root out
deep-seated problems plaguing the agency
and President Barack Obamas decision to put an insider in charge despite his
administrations own review that called
for exactly the opposite.
The White House said Obama still
has full confidence in recently appointed
Director Joseph Clancy, despite a new
investigation into two agents accused of
driving into White House security barrier
after drinking. While declining to discuss
the investigation, Obamas aides described
Clancy as the right man to fix problems.
Nobody has higher standards for the
Secret Service than Director Clancy, said
White House spokesman Eric Schultz.
Yet lawmakers charged with overseeing the agency were aghast and wondered
how after intense national scrutiny and
a rotating cast of directors the Secret
Service still hasnt corrected problems
involving behavior of its agents. In a rare
move, the top Republican and Democrat
on the Houses oversight panel joined
forces to say that while many of the
agencys top leaders have already been
replaced, this incident begs the question
of whether that is enough.
Clearly this incident is a major wakeup call, the Democrat, Rep. Elijah
Cummings of Maryland, said later in an
interview.
The two senior agents including
Mark Connolly, the No. 2 on Obamas
security detail had been with other
agents drinking at a bar last week when

they returned to the White House in a

government car, a U.S. official said. The
vehicle entered an area already closed off
by the Secret Service, who were investigating a suspicious package and had put
the White House on lockdown. Officers
on the scene saw the agents car, traveling
slowly, make contact with a barrier, the
official said.
A surveillance video at the White
House captured the entire incident, the
official said. Congressional staffers were
briefed Thursday on the videos contents.
In a stroke of irony, the agents had been
attending a retirement party for the Secret
Services spokesman, Ed Donovan, whose
job for many years involved answering
questions from the press after other embarrassing incidents.
Obama knew both agents personally.
The two have been reassigned to nonsupervisory, non-operational jobs, a second official said. The officials werent
authorized to comment on an ongoing
investigation and requested anonymity.
The Secret Services response to the
incident, first disclosed by the Washington
Post, has also come under scrutiny amid a
report by that newspaper that a supervisor
directed officers on-scene not to perform
a field sobriety test on the two agents, and
to let them go home. Cummings said that
raised serious questions about whether
Secret Service agents believe they can
follow their own set of rules.
Cummings and Rep. Jason Chaffetz,
R-Utah, the chairman of the oversight
committee, sent a letter Thursday to Clancy
asking him to brief them on the incident
and provide the panel with any video footage, photographs or audio recordings.

Scam
(Continued from page 1)
In 2012, the IRS started working more closely with U.S.
attorneys offices around the country to combat tax refund
fraud by people using stole identities, said Caroline Ciraolo,
acting assistant attorney general for the Justice Departments
tax division. Since then, the tax division has opened nearly
1,000 investigations and brought prosecutions against more
than 1,400 people, Ciraolo told the Senate Finance Committee
hearing.
Given the sophistication of this criminal activity and the
fact that a lot of it comes from overseas, this looks to me like
an emerging type of organized crime, said Sen. Ron Wyden
of Oregon, the top Democrat on the Finance Committee.
The inspector generals office started receiving complaints
about the telephone scam in 2013. Immigrants were the primary target early on, the IGs office said. But the scam has since
become more widespread.
As part of the telephone scam, fake IRS agents call taxpayers, claim they owe taxes, and demand payment using a
prepaid debit card or a wire transfer. Those who refuse are

threatened with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or

drivers license, Camus said.
The callers can manipulate caller ID to make it look like
they are calling from an IRS phone number. They might even
know the last four digits of the taxpayers Social Security
number, Camus said.
They request prepaid debit cards because they are harder to
trace than bank cards. Prepaid debit cards are different from
bank cards because they are not connected to a bank account.
Instead, consumers buy the cards at stores, and use them just
like a bank card, until the money runs out or they add more.
Real IRS agents usually contact people first by mail,
Camus said. And they never demand payment by debit card,
credit card or wire transfer.
Our message is simple, Camus said. If someone calls
unexpectedly claiming to be from the IRS with aggressive
threats if you do not pay immediately, it is a scam artist calling. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by telephone. If you do owe money to the IRS, chances are you have
already received some form of a notice or correspondence
from the IRS in your mailbox.

The Walt Disney Co. on Thursday announced plans to make
a sequel to the animated mega-hit Frozen. Bob Iger, Walt
Disney Co. chief executive, and John Lasseter, head of Walt
Disney Animation Studios, joined in officially announcing
Frozen 2 at the companys annual shareholders meeting in
San Francisco.
The sequel had been widely expected for a film that has
become a juggernaut for Disney. Since its release in November
2013, Frozen has made nearly $1.3 billion globally at the
box office, generated a massive merchandising revenue stream
and won the Academy Award for best animated feature.
Disney didnt announce any details on the sequels plot or
a release date, but said directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck
will be returning.
We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back
in that world with those characters, said Lasseter. Jennifer
Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a
sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and were
taking you back to Arendelle.
Though a sequel was always only a matter of time, fans have
waited eagerly for the announcement. Most big box-office hits
generate sequel announcements within weeks of opening.
But any delay in a Frozen sequel has been easily assuaged
by the films unabated popularity. Frozen is by far the biggest grossing animated film ever, and its soundtrack, led by
Idina Menzels Let it Go, remains ubiquitous. A Frozen
short is to play in front of Disneys latest release, the live-action Cinderella, which opens in theaters today.
Josh Gad, the voice of the snowman Olaf, was on hand
for the announcement Thursday and will be returning for the
sequel. But no other returning characters were announced.
At the shareholders meeting, Disney also announced a
release date for Star Wars: Episode VIII: May 26, 2017. Rian
Johnson (Looper) is confirmed to write and direct.

Putins spokesman: Russian

leader in really perfect health
MOSCOW
(AP)

Speculation is swirling in
Russia about the state of
Vladimir Putins health, as an
unusual spell outside the public eye fuels the rumor mill.
On Thursday, the Russian
presidents spokesman sought
to quash such talk, saying
in an interview that Putins
health is really perfect.
Dmitry Peskov told The
Associated Press that Putin
has a busy agenda in the
coming days, including some
international meetings. He
said that next week the president is set to make a trip to
Kazakhstan, which had been
planned for this week but
abruptly postponed.
The 62-year old Russian
leader was last seen in public
on March 5, when he hosted
Italian Prime Minister Matteo
Renzi before falling out of
sight for a week a highly
unusual absence. The Kremlin
insisted that the president had
a few other official meetings
in the following days, but
some Russian media contested that and claimed they had
actually taken place earlier.
Peskov rejected the allegations, and insisted that the
Russian leader was keeping
his usual busy schedule.
There is absolutely no
reason for any doubts about
the state of his health,
Peskov told the AP. His
health is really perfect, everything is OK with him, and
hes working in accordance
with his traditionally overloaded working schedule.
Putins conspicuous disappearance from the public eye
comes at a turbulent moment
in Russias domestic politics.
Last week, Russias security
agencies arrested five men
suspected of involvement in
the Feb. 27 killing of top
opposition figure Boris
Nemtsov, who was shot dead
on a bridge near the Kremlin.
The suspected triggerman
was a former senior officer in
Chechnyas police force, and
the regions Moscow-backed
leader Ramzan Kadyrov defi-

antly described the suspect

as a brave soldier and deeply
religious man who wouldnt
do any harm to Russia. A
day after the arrests were
announced, Putin awarded
Kadyrov with one of Russias
highest medals, a move
widely seen as an attempt to
assuage the feisty Chechen
strongman.
Some observers say the
arrests could signal a fierce
battle for power between
Kadyrov, who has run
Chechnya as his personal
fiefdom relying on generous
Kremlin subsidies, and some
top figures in Russian law-enforcement agencies who have
long viewed the Chechen
leader with resentment.
Many Russian opposition
activists have remained skeptical about the official probe
and blamed the government
for Nemtsovs death.
Commenting on a statement
by Nemtsovs daughter Zhanna,
who told BBC that she holds
Putin politically responsible
for her fathers death, Peskov
said the investigation will point
to the real culprits.
We understand the emotions of his daughter, we
can only renew the condolences that were expressed
by President Putin after that
tragic death, he said. We
do hope that in coming days
all the formalities in terms
of legislation will be completed and prosecutors will
sound out their versions of
the murder, those who are
standing behind and so on
and so forth.
European Union lawmakers on Thursday adopted a
resolution demanding an
international investigation
into the killing of Nemstov,
calling it the most significant political murder in recent
Russian history. The resolution said that Russia is acting contrary to a functioning
democracy and that government propaganda is turning
the nation into a state of
repression, hate speech and
fear.
