communication
Even in their own language, it is sometimes difficult to communicate
successfully and without conflict. It is not surprising that intercultural
communication is often problematic. How do we experience and perceive
the world, and underpin our culture.Every language allows only certain
interpretations of the world, ie, different languages and cultures create
different social realities.
Difficulties of non-verbal communication
Communication consists of both verbal and non-verbal signals, with less
than 10% of all communication on the verbal level takes place (excluding
the written word). The problem is the perception of communication in that
it is interpreted in the light of their own language and culture (mis) and
especially negative interpretations tend to be attributed to the external
communication partner.
Especially in the area of non-verbal communication difficulties are
inevitable. Even a single hand movement can sometimes lead to great
misunderstandings (Big and Reker 2010).
Even the perception of facial expressions is highly culturally dependent
and by no means universal. While for us Westerners, the entire expression
for the interpretation of the feelings of the communication partner is
critical to note East Asians especially the eyes. Westerner so take the
following example while facing fear come true while East Asians see
disgust (Rachel in Biology Journal 2009).
This difference in perception focus even reflected in the use of emoticons
(strings, which we use in the written electronic communication to express
mood and emotional states) resist:
know whether the culturally valid 'filter is also valid for the other person,
since the person also belong to a subculture or may be a Secondo.
Each intercultural encounter mean for the participants so first a
uncertainty. I have to accept that my interlocutor thinks in a way that
speaks and acts that I did not or only poorly understand and I can not or
only poorly explained.
How people deal with such uncertainty, depends not least on the
structural properties of their belief: An essential prerequisite for the
success of intercultural communication process is the willingness of the
interaction partners, their explanatory models and their cultural filter
constantly expand, revise, correct ( Stefan Strohschneider
2008). Consequently, a successful intercultural communication requires a
differentiated, less rigid ideology that allows inconsistencies.
Schwierigkeiten der
interkulturellen
Kommunikation
2010).
