(Refreshed 2010) To be completed within 12 weeks of starting service

Name:______________________________________________
Start Date:___________________________________________
Line Manager:________________________________________
Team/Establishment/Organisation________________________
___________________________________________________
Date by which workbook was completed:___________________
On completion of this training and workbook I will:
Understand the role of the health and social care worker
Understand and maintain personal development
Communicate effectively
Understand equality and diversity
Recognise principles for implementing duty of care
Know and understand the principles of safeguarding in health
and social care
Understand person-centred support
Maintain health and safety in an adult social care setting
NOTE: This workbook is based on the Skills for Care Common Induction
Standards (2010 refreshed edition). All new Social Care staff should complete the
Common Induction Standards during the Induction period. This should take place
within 12 weeks of joining your organisation. This workbook will enable new staff to
record and demonstrate their knowledge and skills. The line-manager/trainer
should counter sign where identified to indicate the employees knowledge,
understanding and practical application.
The standards are taken from Skills for Care and developed into a workbook
by Brighton & Hove City Council. As identified by Skills for Care
these standards/workbook may be copied and re-distributed as a free
document in pursuit of workforce development in social care

The progress log used for marking can be found in the right hand margin against
each standard. Here you will also find reference numbers which relate to Skills for
Care Common Induction Standard outcomes.
The manager should indicate outcomes met against each outcome when the
standard has been achieved. There is an option to refer a standard which may
require further questioning or training prior to being marked as outcomes met.
At the end of each of the eight standards the manager should sign and date once
complete. It is important that the manager is satisfied of evidence of learning
before signing off each standard.
Further guidance is included under Format of the Workbook over page

No. We have produced the workbook as one way to directly map to Skills for Care
Common Induction Standards and assist new workers to evidence their learning
against the standards. You may have your own workbook, e-learning system or
training programme.
The workbook will assist managers in supporting people through the induction
process during the first 12 weeks of employment. Some of the standards in the
workbook relate closely to mandatory training employees may undertake. If
standards are met by attending training or through a professional discussion a
manager may feel that they can sign areas of the workbook off without the member
of staff completing answers. There would be a requirement to carefully document
this against the relevant sections. We would however recommend that the
workbook is fully completed as this can provide full evidence of induction and
learning.
If new employees have undertaken full induction training elsewhere the areas
highlighted WORKPLACE SPECIFIC (found in the progress log) should be
considered as these are areas specific to working in your / a new organisation or
work place
