Taxes may increase

Fun at Family Science Night

Council passes municipal budget that includes

$15.11 increase for average assessed home
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel residents may have
a small increase in their municipal tax bill in 2015.
Mt. Laurel council unanimously approved the 2015 municipal
budget on first reading at last
weeks meeting. The budget includes a tax increase of $15.11 for
the average assessed home of
$236,952.
The tax rate and the budget
both increased slightly from last
year. The total budget is just less
than $37.6 million, a small bump
up from the $37.3 million of last
year. The tax rate was increased
$.006 per $100 of assessed value.
Township manager Maureen
Mitchell said there are no major
changes to the budget this year.
The proposed budget would keep
all township services intact.
Council also passed an ordinance on first reading to increase
budget appropriations up to 3.5
percent to create a bank cap for
possible use in future years. The
ordinance will be on the agenda
for second reading and a public
hearing at councils next meeting
on March 23.
The 2015 municipal budget will
be presented in detail during the

second reading and public hearing at councils April 13 meeting.

Manager review discussed

With council preparing for its
annual review of the township
manager, there was discussion
whether reviews from department heads and township employees should be considered.
Deputy Mayor Dennis Riley
suggested the township do a 360degree job performance review.
He felt getting feedback from employees from all over the township would be valuable. He added
many private businesses use a
360-degree job performance review for managers.
Councilman Jim Keenan disagreed, saying such a review
could put a strain on the township.
I dont think its healthy for
the managers office and the
township, he said.
Councilman Rich Van Noord
agreed with Riley, but added the
360-degree review is just a suggestion on how the township may be
able to do things better.
This is not calling into question the confidence of the manager, he said. I thinks shes doing

With construction on a Walmart and Lifetime Fitness well

underway in zones one and two of
the Fellowship redevelopment
area in Mt. Laurel, township officials are now turning their attention to zone three.
Council approved on first reading an amended Fellowship redevelopment plan at last weeks
meeting. The amended plan sets
site standards to the redevelopment areas third zone, a five-acre
plot along Beaver Avenue near
Route 73.
The standards were discussed
and put into an ordinance after
the landowner, Laurel Capital
Group, asked the planning board

to make site standards for the

property.
Township planner Joseph
Petrongolo said iFly, an indoor
skydiving company, expressed interest in possibly moving to the
property. Some of the changes in
the amended plan would allow
iFly to develop if it so desired.
The site standards would allow
a variety of uses on the property,
including administrative offices,
medical offices, business services, eateries and recreation. The
setbacks and buffer requirements
were also shrunk in comparison
to redevelopment zones. The maximum building height would be
45 feet for occupied space and 60
feet in total.

ver the last few weeks, you

may have read on this page
our request to have you send
in the story of your marriage proposal. March 20 is National Proposal Day,
and we are celebrating the under-theradar holiday by telling the stories
of marriage engagements of the members of this community.
Why do we do this? As one of our associate editors would say, we love
love.
And so, too, apparently, do plenty of
other New Jerseyans. A recently-released Census report shows that New
Jersey has the lowest percentage of
people who have married two or more
times. So, when we say I do, we tend
to mean it. Or, at the very least, we

dont intend to say it again if things

dont go right the first time.
Wed rather focus on that first point,
though. New Jersey has long held one
of the lowest, if not the lowest, divorce
rates in the nation, and experts are
never surprised to read this. Why? Because New Jersey residents typically
fall into categories that put them at a
lower likelihood to get a divorce:
We have a high level of education,
so we often delay marriage to a later
age, making us more emotionally and

financially stable. Money troubles are

a leading cause of divorce, and since a
good portion of our newlyweds are in
a better financial position than their
counterparts in the South and West
where divorce rates are higher we
tend to avoid the D-word.
Which circles us back to what were
really talking about here wonderful,
head-over-heels love.
We have already received plenty of
stories from the community about
their memorable engagement stories,
and we thank you for them. Your stories will be told in these pages in the
coming weeks. If you want to share
your stories with the town, please
send them in. We love love, all year
round.

The Sun wants to know: How did you get engaged?

Share your stories with our readers for National Proposal Day on March 20
Maybe he popped the question on a picturesque summer day at the beach, a banner plane proclaiming his love flying overhead. Perhaps she organized your family
and friends into a flash mob, asking for
your hand in marriage at the end of an
elaborate song and dance. Or maybe it was
simple, both curled up on the couch at
home, sharing a pizza and laughing over

the latest episode of a favorite sitcom.

March 20 is National Proposal Day, and
no matter how you went from single to betrothed, The Sun wants to celebrate with
your stories.
Was it the most romantic proposal in
history? A proposal that went hysterically
wrong, but still with an enthusiastic yes
at the end? Maybe the third time was the

charm? Whatever your story, were calling

on you to send it in so we can share it with
everyone.
Send in your perfect (or not-so-perfect)
proposal story, and a photo of you and your
special someone, to our news email, which
is listed to the right.
Watch for your stories in an upcoming

Police make arrest

in armed robbery
The following information
comes from Lt. Joseph Friel of
the Evesham Township Police Department:
Following the armed robbery
of a T.J Maxx Store in Evesham
Township on Jan. 19, investigators were able to collect DNA evidence from the scene that was
later used to identify and connect
a suspect to the crime.
During the investigation, Evesham investigators submitted
DNA evidence to the New Jersey
State Police laboratory for testing.

The results of the DNA tests

along with other evidence led the
Evesham Police Department to
charging a male with committing
the robbery.
On March 4, the United States
Marshals Service located and arrested the suspect hiding in an
apartment building in East Camden.
Arrested:
A male, age 30, of Mount Laurel was charged with second-degree robbery. He was lodged in
the Burlington County Jail in default of $150,000 full bail.

Prior to voting, council expressed a few concerns about the
plan and the site. The biggest
issue was concern about traffic
on Beaver Avenue. Council felt
the property would need a driveway from Route 73 to the property
to relieve traffic along Beaver Avenue. Petrongolo said the property would also be connected to the
other redevelopment zones to
help improve traffic flow.
We want to have that connection to negate the traffic concerns, he said.
The reduction in the setbacks
was also a concern for some council members, including Councilman Jim Keenan, who was worried the reduced setbacks would
put new development too close to
homes in the area.
Petrongolo said the reduced
setbacks are necessary because
the property is much smaller
than the one where Walmart is
being constructed. Having setbacks of up to 100 feet would leave
very little land to develop.
It all has to do with the size of

the lot, he said.

Keenan was also worried about
the number of buildings on the
property. In addition to iFly, the
property would be able to house
smaller pad sites for businesses.
Though the current plan only allows up to 50 percent of the property to be covered with buildings,
Keenan was worried there may
be too many smaller buildings.
Id rather have two nice buildings than five smaller buildings,
he said.
Deputy Mayor Dennis Riley
was unsure about the building
height, saying he didnt know if a
45-foot height requirement would
be enough for an indoor skydiving facility.
Petrongolo explained if iFly
were to build on the property, the
building height limitation would
be more than enough to accommodate it.
The activities that take place
in iFly are in the first floor of the
building, he said.
Despite the concerns, council
unanimously voted to approve
the amended plan on first reading. The plan will be on councils
agenda for second reading and
public hearing at its next meeting
on March 23.
