3. Objectives
The main objectives of the Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering) Program are
1. To achieve academic excellence in the areas of civil engineering
2. To educate and train graduate students on the basis of both strong theoretical background
and satisfactory performance on research work
3. To promote the cooperation in research and development with both related government
and private agencies
4. Admission
4.1 Pre-qualification
4.1.1 An applicant to the program must possess a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil
Engineering from an accredited institution, or a Bachelors degree in any field from an accredited
institution with a certified civil engineer license or obtain consent of the graduate admission
committee.
4.1.2 An applicant must follow section 8 of the regulation of Graduate School of Thammasat
University, 1998
4.2 Examination
The applicant shall pass interview and/or entrance examination
5. Academic System
5.1 The M.Eng. (Civil Engineering) Program is a bi-semester Program with thesis (Plan A
option), with both regular and evening programs.
5.2 The courses will be taught in Thai.
5.3 The Curriculum is divided into fields of study:
a. Structural engineering
b. Water resources and Environmental Engineering
Both curricula consist of 42 credits. With 12 credits of required courses, 12 credits of elective coursed,
and 18 credits of thesis.
5.4 To be eligible to take the comprehensive examination, the students must have completed a
minimum of 12 credits of required courses, and must have a cumulative G.P.A of not less than 3.00.
5.5 The students must pass the foreign language requirement prior to defense of their thesis
5.6 To be able to register for thesis, the students must have registered for at least two regular
semesters and have completed a minimum of 15 credits, a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.00, and pass
the comprehensive examination.
5.7 Duration
The students have to complete the study as follow;
- For regular program: not more than 8 semesters
- For evening program: not more than 14 semesters
5.8 Register for courses
The Students must follow Item 11 of the regulation of Graduate School of Thammasat
University, 1998.

5.9.1 Grade is divided into 9 steps as follows;

5.9.2 Thesis is graded S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory). Foreign language and

than C and grade is S (Satisfactory)

7. Degree Requirements
7.1 Complete 42 credits as prescribed in the curriculum.
7.2 Obtain a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.00.
7.3 Pass the comprehensive examination.
7.4 Pass the foreign language requirement.
7.5 Pass the thesis examination.
7.6 Prior to defense their thesis, abstract that is a part of their thesis or their thesis has to be
accepted for publication in journal or proceeding of regular conference.

Course Description
CE601 Applied Mathematics
3 credits
Linear vector spaces, systems of linear equations and solutions, transformation of matrices,
eigenvalues, eigenvectors, ordinary differential equations, function spaces, series solutions, transform
methods, applications to civil engineering problems, and introduction to calculus of variation.
CE615 GIS Engineering and Applications
3 credits
GIS fundamental. Traditional and digital representation of spatial data and techniques. Basic
concepts, conceptual and practical aspects and implementation of GIS. Spatial information operations
and analysis. Specific skills will be developed and completed individually. Presentation of interactive
demonstration is required for each group project.
CE616 Positioning with GPS
3 credits
GPS fundamental. Basic thoughts and scheme of GPS system. GPS time system. GPS
observables. Ephemeris computation and interpolation. Atmospheric effects on GPS signals. Dilution
of precision (DOP). Differential GPS. Precise point positioning (PPP). GPS computation and analysis
algorithm.
CE621 Theory of Structural Mechanics
3 credits
Elasticity theory, stress and strain analysis, failure theories, yield criteria, energy principles,
introduction to stability of structures, and applications to structural problems.
CE622 Advanced Structural Analysis
3 credits
Matrix analysis of structures, computer implementation, structural analysis using computer
programs, solution methods, errors and accuracy, special analysis procedure, virtual work in matrix
analysis, and introduction to the finite element method and nonlinear analysis.
CE625 Advanced Structural Dynamics
3 credits
Analysis of lumped-mass, single degree and multi-degree of freedom systems, structures
with distributed mass and loads, numerical analysis by model analysis and direct time integration, and
analysis of structures subjected to earthquake and wind loading.

CE626 Finite Element Method in Civil Engineering


3 credits
Fundamentals of the finite element method, formulation of finite elements, numerical
solution procedure, applications to problems in structural mechanics, convergence and accuracy,
isoparametric elements, special procedure, and introduction to the boundary element method, and
nonlinear analysis.
CE627 Experimental Structural Analysis
3 credits
Experimental studies of structural models and components, stress analysis, electrical strain
gauge, nondestructive and partial destructive testing.
CE631 Advanced Reinforced Concrete Design
3 credits
Behavior and strength of reinforced concrete members under various types of loading
conditions, failure of reinforced concrete, basic principles and methods underlying design of
reinforced concrete structures, and limit state design.
CE635 Advanced Prestressed Concrete Design
3 credits
Behavior of prestressed concrete members, type of prestressed concrete, working limit state,
service limit state, ultimate limit state for bending and shear strength, fatigue limit state for bending
and shear strength, and structural details.
CE636 Advanced Design and Behavior of Steel Structures
3 credits
Behavior and design of structural steel members under compression, tension, bending and
combined loading, beams with and without lateral supports, braced and unbraced frame structures,
connection and welding, and basic principles and methods underlying design of steel structures.
CE637 Advanced Concrete Technology
3 credits
Cement, quality and cement testing, hydration process, properties of water, aggregates,
admixtures, pozzolans, fresh concrete, mix proportion, properties of hardened concrete, durability of
concrete, deformation, modern concrete, special concrete, and ready-mixed concrete.
CE645 Project Management and Planning in Civil Engineering
3 credits
Principles and methods of project management, project feasibility studies, techniques for
construction planning and scheduling, modern management for construction projects, project
evaluation, decision theory in construction, total quality management.
CE651 Advanced Soil Mechanics
3 credits
Soil formation, the nature of soil, stress distribution in soil mass, stress-strain behavior,
effective stress concept, shear strength of cohesionless, undrained and drained shear strength of
cohesive soil, one dimensional and two dimensional flow, theory of consolidation and settlement
analysis, creep in soft soil, dynamic properties of soil and theory of foundation vibration.
CE652 Advanced Foundation Engineering
3 credits
Soil investigation for large-scale project, measurement and selection of soil parameters,
combined footing, spread footing subjected to moment, floating foundation, large pile foundation,
bored piles caissons, settlement analysis, settlement acceleration and reduction, earth retaining
structure, slurry wall, foundation underpinning, soil improvement, and foundations design for machine
vibration; earthquake and other sources.
CE671 Hydrodynamics
3 credits
Fundamentals and basic concepts on hydrodynamics, stress-strain relationship, Navier-Stoke
equation, conservation of mass, momentum, and energy equations, boundary layer theory, laminar
and turbulent flows, applications to environmental engineering, sedimentation, and mathematical
model of fluid flow.
CE672 Advanced Hydrology
3 credits
Potential of moisture in air mass, probable maximum precipitation, intensity-durationfrequency curve, flood characteristics, flood estimation, statistical hydrology, analysis of hydrologic
time series, identification of hydrologic characteristics, and simulation of hydrologic phenomena.

Groundwater occurrence, steady and unsteady well hydraulics, groundwater modeling,
recharging well, resistance method for assessing groundwater resources, two-and three-dimensional
flows in saturated and unsaturated zones, and application of finite difference.
CE676 Water Resources System Engineering

Application of system analysis for planning, design, and operation study, simulation model,
deterministic and stochastic methodology, design and operation reservoir, and optimization.
CE677 Hydraulic Design
3 credits
Design of dams, spillway, stilling basin, energy dissipation, gates and control structures, open
channel hydraulic design, flow in closed conduit, models for transition flow design.
CE678 Hydrodynamic Model
3 credits
Conservation of mass equation, conservation of energy equation, momentum equation,
methods for solving differential equations, numerical solutions of partial differential equations,
structure of mathematical model, application of model for study of river flow behavior, flood
forecasting and planning for flood damage mitigation project.
CE681 Physical and Chemical Processes
3 credits
Physical and chemical unit operations for water treatment, emphasizing process combinations
for drinking water supply. Application of principles of chemistry, rate processes, fluid dynamics, and
process engineering to define and solve water treatment problems by flocculation, sedimentation,
filtration, disinfection, oxidation, aeration, and absorption.
CE682 Environmental Chemistry and Laboratory
3 credits
Sampling procedures and analytical techniques for the determination of physical, chemical
properties: characteristics of water, wastewater, air and solid wastes: interpretation and application of
data for process design and control.
CE685 Treatment Process Design
3 credits
Analysis of specialized water pollution control processes such as absorption, oxidation, and
air stripping. Emphasis on physical and chemical process in treatment of hazardous wastes, especially
contaminated ground water. Definitions of problems and objectives, evaluation of alternatives for
example cases, preliminary process design and cost evaluations.
CE686 Environmental Microbiology
3 credits
Fundamental aspects of microbiology and biochemistry. Biochemical and biophysical
principles of biochemical reactions, energetic, and mechanisms of energy conservation. Composition
of the bacterial cell, bacterial growth. Diversity of microbial catabolism, flow of organic matter
in nature: the carbon cycle. Bacterial physiology, and ecology of microbes in soil and sediments,
bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Microbes in the degradation of pollutants.
CE687 Biological Processes
3 credits
Biological processes for transformation of environmental contaminants. Unit processes for
biological treatment including dispersed growth and fixed-film systems. Aerobic and anaerobic
process, microbial ecology, and kinetics, with applications to the treatment of municipal and industrial
wastewater.
CE688 Advanced Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes
3 credits
New developments in water treatment operations with emphasis on expansion of design
capacity of existing units: removal: of organic from drinking water, nitrogen and phosphorus removal,
advanced methods of organic carbon removal, dissolved inorganic removal: land application of
wastes for treatment: tertiary treatment.

CE689 Hazardous Waste Management and Remediation

Management of hazardous waste and remediation of contaminated sites. Definition of
hazardous waste. Characterization of contaminated sites, risk-based decision analysis, and
engineering analysis of chemical, thermal, and biological: technologies for treatment of hazardous
waste, contaminated soil, and ground water.
