Cooperative Learning Lesson #1

Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Computation
Subtopic: Multiplication of Fractions in word form
Time/Date: 40 minutes; 5/11/2014
Materials: charts, tape, markers, fractions, papers, chalk board
Class/Level: First Form (1H)

Previous Knowledge:
Students have fluency with all numbers and basic arithmetic operations (+,-, , ). Students have
a working knowledge of multiplying simple fractions and cancelling/reducing fractions to their
lowest form.
Objectives: Through observation and discussion students will be able to:
1) Multiply fractions in word form with 90% proficiency. (C.A)
2) Construct area models to represent multiplication of fractions. (P)
3) Develop an awareness of the importance of accuracy in computation(A)
Concept:
When fractions are multiplied the results is given by multiplying together the number in the
numerator and also the multiplying together the numbers in the denominator. For example
In arithmetic form:

In algebra form:

Skills:
1) Multiplication of fractions
2) Dividing unit square
3) Cancel fractions
Attitudes:
1) Work cooperatively
2) Participate in class activity
3) Develop awareness for accuracy
Introduction:
1) Students will remain in their regular class grouping.
2) Teacher will discuss with students the use and application of fractions in everyday life.
3) Intro activity: Teacher will use two models to review students knowledge of multiplying
fractions from a previous lesson.

1) Teacher use the idea of area models and apply it to the 4 steps of problem solving that
was previously introduced to them when solving problems in worded form.
2) Each group will be given a word problem, students will solve the problem using area
models and the steps of problem solving.
3) Groups will be randomly selected to present results to the class and any misconceptions
will be clarified by their peers and teacher.
Closure: through questioning students will share with the class what they have learnt.
Conclusion: Students will be given a problem that they will do individually and collected by the
teacher: using area models students will find a fraction that represents the number of fabric

needed for 6 costumes if each costume requires 3 4

yards.

Extended Activity: Students will use a cookbook to find a recipe for a dessert they would like to
make and rewrite the recipe, giving the amount of each ingredient that will be needed to serve
the entire class.
