Living As A Disciple Of Jesus The Christ

Lesson 5
Jesus Called, Made, and Developed Disciples (II)
I. Introduction and Review

(See Discipleship In The Ministry Of Jesus

by Jones)
1. Jesus filled His personal ministry with the training of His disciples
2. He taught them by word of mouth AND by the EXAMPLE HE GAVE
3. In the previous lesson (Lesson 4), it was noted that:
--- Jesus called different kinds of people to be His disciples
--- He called them to Himself, to a life of sacrifice, to a life of evangelism
and to a changed life
--- Jesus had great fellowship or association with His disciples. He spent
much time with them
(Mark 3:14)
--- He showed great emotions before them
--- Jesus challenged His disciples in many different ways:
To be like Him (Luke 6:40)
To be people of obedience
(Luke 6:46)
To seek truth
(John 8:31, 32)
To set proper priorities
(Matthew 6:19-34) Etc.

II. Jesus Expressed His Disapproval Of The Actions Of His Disciples and
Others
1. He told them that their righteousness must GO BEYOND the kind of
righteousness that the Pharisees had
(Matthew 5:20)
2. He urged them NOT to practice their religion to be seen by men
(Matthew 6:1)
3. He taught against self-righteousness, people expressing HOW GOOD they
were!
--- See the example of the Pharisee in Luke 18:9-14
See the self-righteous hypocrites of Matthew 23
4. Jesus disapproved of the UNBELIEF of His disciples (See Mark 16:14)
5. He disapproved of those who already had their minds made up, and did
not want to be confused with the facts (See Mark 8:31-33)
6. NOTE: Jesus always disapproved in a LOVING MANNER!
(See Luke 7:40-47)

III. Jesus Always Pointed His Disciples To The Father

1. Jesus came to EXPLAIN THE FATHER
(John 1:18)
2. He would explain that His teaching was NOT HIS, BUT WAS FROM THE
ONE WHO SENT HIM
(John 7:16)

3. Note the many verses that show that the FATHER SENT JESUS!
(John 4:34; 5:24, 30, 36-37; 6:38, 44; 6:57; 7:33; 8:16, 18; 12:44, 49;
16:5; 17:18; 20:21 etc.)
4. At the raising of Lazarus from the dead, Jesus honored the Father
(John 11:41, 42)
5. Jesus would emphasize the power of the Father (See Mark 10:27)
6. He also stressed the Fathers concern for His people (Matthew 10:28-31)
7. He knew that the Father had given all things into His hands (John 13:3)

IV. He Developed FAITH In The Hearts Of His Disciples

1. He told Peter that He had prayed for him, that his faith would not fail
(Luke 22:31, 32)
2. He expressed with feeling the FAITH of the Gentile centurion
(Luke 7:1-10)
3. He taught them FAITH in the calming of the storm
(Mark 4:35-41)
4. He taught them to have more FAITH in the eternal than the physical
(Matthew 6:19-34). Stop worrying about the physical things of life!

V. He Corrected What Was Wrong In Their Values

1. He showed that the womans anointing of Jesus was valuable
(Matthew 26:6-11). It was more valuable than the money!
2. He showed the disciples that touching little children was valuable
(Mark 10:13-15)
3. He showed that the healing of the man with a withered hand was valuable
(Mark 3:1-5)
4. He showed the value of the woman taken in adultery
(John 8:1-22)
5. He taught them concerning who was really the greatest
(Matthew 20:20-28)
6. He showed them that just possessing things is NOT VALUABLE
(Luke 12:15-21)

VI. He Taught His Disciples By ASKING THEM QUESTIONS

1. He asked, Do you believe this? Do you believe that Jesus is the
Resurrection and the Life?
(John 11:23-26)
2. Peter, do you love me more than these?
(John 21:15-17)
3. Are you able to drink the cup that I will drink?
(Mark 10:38)
4. What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?
Matthew 22:41-45)(
