Problem 1 (8Points)
Classify each of the following statements as true or false (0.5 pt. each)
1. (T) (F) An isothermal process means that no heat is added to the system.
2. (T) (F) Entropy and work are properties of the system.
3. (T) (F) Specific volume is an intensive property.
4. (T) (F) Specific weight (w) is the weight per unit mass of the substance.
5. (T) (F) The gas is ideal gas as the reduced pressure (Pr) becomes clearly greater than 0.1.
6. (T) (F) If a system contains both liquid and vapor in equilibrium at the saturation temperature then the
quality of such system is typically defined as the ratio of the mass of vapor to the mass of the mixture.
7. (T) (F) At the critical point the saturated liquid and saturated vapor states are identical.
8. (T) (F) For an adiabatic turbine, the friction will always cause the entropy to increase.
Circle the right answer (note: only one answer is correct) (1 pt.each)

3. A closed system undergoes an adiabatic irreversible process. During this process the
entropy change of the system:
a.
b.
c.
d.
is positive.
is negative.
is zero.
None of the above.
4. (a) A heat pump is a cyclic device that removes heat from a low temperature reservoir to a high
temperature reservoir with the help of work supplied to the cycle.
(b) Answer (a) above cannot be true because heat cannot be transferred from the low temperature
body to a high temperature body even if you supply work.
(c) Both (a) and (b) above cannot be true because a heat pump is a cyclic device that receives
heat and convert part of the heat received into work.
(d) The heat pump is the device used to increase the pressure of hot liquids.
(e) None of the above.

Problem 2 (5 Points)
A rigid tank contains 10 kg of air (as an ideal gas) at 350 kPa and 27oC. The air is now heated until its
pressure doubles. Determine the following:
a) The volume of the tank (m3).
(1.5 pts.)
b) The amount of heat transfer (kJ).
(2.5 pts.)
c) You are told that the entropy remains constant during this process. Is this statement
valid? Justify your answer. No need to calculate the entropy.

Problem 3 (6 Points)
A heat engine cycle operates between two thermal reservoirs as shown in the figure below. The heat is
.
supplied in the boiler ( Q H ) at a steady rate of 1 MW, the heat rejected in the condenser ( Q L ) at a rate of
.
0.58 MW, and the pump input power ( W pump ) is 0.02 MW. Then calculate:

Problem 4 (8 Points)
Water at 10 MPa and 60oC flows steadily at a flow rate of 40 kg/s through a heat exchanger and a turbine as
shown in the figure below. The water is heated in the heat exchanger by hot air that flows into the heat exchanger
at a rate of 100 kg/s with temperature of 1335oC and leaves at 120oC.
Assume the process through the turbine to be isentropic. Moreover, neglect any pressure drop in the boiler and in
the piping system connecting the heat exchanger to the turbine. Air can be assumed an ideal gas.
Determine:
1. The rate (in kJ/s) at which heat is lost from the air.
(2 pts.)
2. The temperature and the phase of the water at exit of the heat exchanger (i.e. point 2) (2 pts.)
3. The power output from the turbine.
