What good is learning, if we havent learned to be civilized humans?[from my

supervisor at Corlears Summer Science Camp 2013]

Dear Thya and Amy-Marie,

I am writing to recommend David Chung for the position of 4/5s head teacher
at Corlears School. I have known David for about four years as a friend since
we met at our church. I was immediately drawn to his calm, gentle, and
intelligent personality as well as his deep, passionate, and spiritual
educational philosophy. I have enjoyed spending time with his family and
always respected the way he has been raising his children to be friendly and
compassionate little people.

I was excited when David volunteered to work at camp this summer

especially because I believed he would bring a great attitude and a serious
dedication to teaching science, whether or not he had a lot of experience with
the topics. I also felt confident that he would care for the children in a
respectful and clear way and keep them safe and having fun on the many
trips planned.

Throughout the past three weeks I have not been disappointed. David has
been successful at forging positive relationships with each child, as well as
with his teaching partner and parents. With minimal guidance, David has
taken both curriculum I suggested, as well as many of his own ideas to create
curriculum which is interesting to the children and full of important
environmental and scientific concepts. He has made sure to plan the lessons
and activities in connection to the trips planned to help further deepen the
childrens understanding.

Every time I have observed David at camp, it is clear that he has set
appropriate limits for the kids, and that they are happily engaged in their
work with him. One day, I found the group in the yard exploring compost
together. Some children were digging in the dirt looking for creatures, while
others were scooping up compost from the bins or sifting through piles on the
ground. There was a great deal of excitement as different organisms were
found and collected to be observed later in the classroom.

Other times I have observed David helping the kids to draw life-size birds that
they colored and cut out and were obviously proud of, adding facts in their
nature journals that they learned on trips, and leading physical activities like
yoga and community building games. During each of these times, I saw
children who were feeling comfortable, respected, and clear about limits.
They were also obviously enjoying learning and being a part of the group.

David brings many strengths that would benefit Corlears such as an interest
and practice in non-violent communication, a philosophy that includes
environmental and social justice, and a dedication to teamwork and
collaboration. I believe David is an excellent teacher who, if given the

opportunity to work here, would have a great deal to share both with the
children, teachers, and parents. I hope you will seriously consider him for the
4/5s teaching position.

Sincerely,

Sarah Thornton

Recommendation for David Chung

June 24, 2011

Dear Acceptance Committee,

I strongly recommend David to your summer institute. As a teacher, David has joined Lefferts
Gardens Charter School and made an immediate impact. As an active community member he is
helping our school to advance our multiple missions of environmental science, sustainability and
experiential learning here in the heart of urban, inner city Brooklyn, NY.

I have known David for almost two years. In that time, he has proven himself to be a most
professional educator, dependable advocate for our neighborhood, and now proud father.

It is a pleasure to recommend him to you. LGCS looks forward to all that David will being back to
both students and school.

Please feel free to call.

To Whom it May Concern,

This letter is my personal recommendation for David Chung. He worked during
the school year 2008-2009 at Our World Neighborhood Charter School as one of
two roving classroom assistants. His position required him to be flexible and
resourceful, as he moved from class to class as needs required. He prepared and
implemented lessons and worked alongside teachers with small groups in all
areas of the curriculum.
In addition, he was assigned daily lunchroom/recess responsibilities, state
examination proctoring, and coverage for teachers who were taking part in
professional development activities. He developed a template script and process
with which he established and maintained daily morning announcements by
fifth graders which were broadcast throughout the school.
In all of these circumstances, David proved to be reliable and responsible. He
made the effort to get to know the children and worked on developing strategies
for managing large groups of children in cooperation with other teachers and
assistants. He sought consultation with me, in my role as curriculum developer,
and consistently made efforts to improve his relationships with the children and
staff, and to increase his competence and confidence as a teacher. He approached
challenges with creativity and good will.
David took on many extra responsibilities. He identified problems with waste
and created a protocol for school-wide recycling in collaboration with other staff
members. He worked with the technology department to create a protocol for
energy efficiency. He initiated practices that reduced food waste considerably in
the lunchroom. These projects, which were initiated due to his concern and
interest, helped inspire increased environmental awareness on the part of staff
and students alike.
I highly recommend David for employment. He has the energy and commitment
to make a substantial contribution to any school fortunate enough to have him.
Thank you,
Dorothy Bukantz

Letter of Recommendation

To whom it may concern

This is a letter of recommendation for David Chung , who is applying for the admission
to your graduate university.
As a teacher and English education assistance at Seoul Seo-won Elementary School, I
had the pleasure of knowing David Chung during one and half years. He was a tremendous
teacher, and the symbol of good American. I would like to take recommend David Chung for
your graduate school.
He worked a foreign English teacher at Seoul Seo-won elementary school in Seo-cho
Gu , Korea. Seo-cho Gu, one of powerful districts of Seoul has had educational program
( American volunteers teach Korean students at regular school time, do home-stay at Korean
familys home , experience Korean cultures and language and make friendship with Korean)
with Manhattan in New York. He was one of the volunteers.
David Chung had excellent foreign language teaching methods. He always tried to
motivate students curiosity and organized class with interesting game, songs, using Internet
materials efficiently. He had 4 classes per a day and sometimes had team teaching, showed the
example of English class in front of Seoul Educational University Students (the University is the
best Educational University in Korea). Whenever we Korean teachers watched his class, we are
always impressed his creativities in teaching and harmony with our pupils. I got good tips many
times from him. He was willing to teach Korean teachers 2times a week for free. I had
participated English teaching workshops with American so many times, and I have learned
English from American teacher, but He was the best teacher, I am sure.

He was willing to take part in school excursions for himself. He was an energetic
volleyball player at Seoul teachers sport events, too. He played an actor at our School festival.
He learned the Korean language in Seoul Educational University after school for understanding
Korean people- It was very impressed point, I rarely met American teacher in learning Korean
language in University , I became to respect him .

My point is that He was an excellent teacher and foreigner who was full of love of
Korean people. Our students and colleague teachers shared good memory with him.
It is these reasons that I offer high recommendations for David Chung . I am certain that
he will truly achieve your graduate program and develop his potential abilities more. If
you have questions regarding his recommendation, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Choi Eun sil
