As a scientist, youll be confronted with complex challenges every day. Overcoming these
challenges will require that you organize your work, collaborate with a network of other scientists,
and treat failure as an opportunity for self-improvement. The Guided Reflection Form will help you
develop these skills through a process of in-depth self-evaluation.

Framing your reflection


When using reflection as a tool to improve, it's helpful to reflect on a concrete episode from your
recent past. Doing so provides an authentic, tangible context for self-reflection.

Failure is a routine part of science: computer programs will be buggy, equipment won't work, and
experiments will yield weird results. Scientists are characterized by their ability to use these setbacks
as opportunities to improve their work.
As a budding scientist, you can prepare yourself for dealing with failure in the lab by working to
develop a healthy attitude towards setbacks in the classroom. This can mean building skills to help

you struggle through a difficult problem set or figure out how to move forward from a low grade. Use

face today require Big Science, i.e., large-scale collaborations involving hundreds or thousands of
scientists all over the world.

Becoming an organized, self-aware, and mindful person


Between teaching classes, writing grants, and managing a research team, scientists have a lot on
their plates. To be successful, they need to be mindful of their workload by staying organized and
making sure their busy schedule isn't negatively impacting their general well-being.
As a budding scientist, you'll find that you have a lot on your plate, too. Use this rubric to help you
become an organized, self-aware, and mindful person.
