GOSPEL OF MARK

Lesson 9
THE END OF TEACHING AND THE EVENTS LEADING TO BETRAYAL
(Mark 13:1 - 14:72)
I. Introduction
A. There are several EVENTS, which took place at this time, that are NOT recorded
in Mark:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

The GREEKS desiring to see Jesus

(John 12:20-27)
The VOICE from heaven
(John 12:28-36)
Reflection on the UNBELIEF of the Jews
(John 12:37-50)
The RENUNCIATION of the Pharisees (Matthew 23:1-36)
Jesus FAREWELL to the TEMPLE
(Matthew 23:37-39)

B. During this period, Jesus will say MUCH about the end of the JEWISH SYSTEM and
their CITY
1.
2.
3.
4.
II.

For example, the parable of the Wicked Tenants (Mark 12:1-12)

He had CLEANSED the TEMPLE
(Mark 11:15-18)
He stated that the house of the Jews would be desolate (Matthew 23:37-39)
NOW, He will speak about the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in
Mark 13.

Jesus Prophecy Concerning the DESTRUCTION of the TEMPLE (Mark 13:1-37)

A. When they were leaving the temple area, the disciples were remarking concerning
the massive stones and the great buildings of the temple (Mark 13:1, 2)
Please see the research book concerning the size of the stones and buildings.
B. Events leading up to this terrible DESTRUCTION :

(Mark 13:3-23)

1. Jesus spoke to them more about this on the Mount of Olives

(Mark 13:3, 4)

2. The four fishermen, Peter, Andrew, James, and John wanted to know when these
things will happen
3. Events before these things happen:
a. There would be false Christs (Mark 13:5, 6, 21, 22). Read Acts
5:36, 37)
b. Wars and rumors of wars
(Mark 13:7)
c. Earthquakes and famines
(Mark 13:8)
d. Time of persecution
(Mark 13:9-13)
e. The abomination of desolation
(Mark 13:14-23)
4. This abomination, Luke says, would be ARMIES (Luke 21:20). These
are the ROMAN ARMIES that would destroy Jerusalem.

5. This warning should cause the disciples to:

a. Flee to the MOUNTAINS of Judea
b. Those on the housetop should not go into the house, but flee
quickly
(Mark 13:15)
c. Those in the field should not return to the house to get clothes
d. Note: Those who would be pregnant and those nursing would have
difficulty
(Mark 13:17)
e. They should pray that their flight NOT be on the Sabbath or in the
winter
(Mark 13:18; Read also Matthew 24:20).
C. There would be great TRIBULATION (Mark 13:19, 20). Jesephus says that,
when Jerusalem was destroyed about 1,100,000 people were killed
D. The Son of Man would come in JUDGMENT. This is a judgment IN time.
(Mark 13:24-27)
1. Jesus statements about the Sun, Moon, and Stars are figurative expressions
about DESTRUCTION, punishment of a CITY or PEOPLE
a. For example, these figures are used in the prophecy of the destruction
of the great city of BABYLON (Isaiah 13:6-11)
b. Similar expressions are also found in Joel 1:15: 2:1, 2; 10, 11;
2:28-32; Zephaniah 1:14, 15; Ezekiel 32:1-8; Isaiah 34:4;
Jeremiah 4:23, 24; Revelation 6:12-17)
E. The parable of the FIG TREE points out that, by looking at the tree, one can tell
when Summer is coming. When they saw the signs Jesus gave, as noted above,
they would know that the destruction of Jerusalem was NEAR (Mark 13:28-31)
F. NOTE VERY CAREFULLY: These events took place in THAT GENERATION
of people in the first century (70 A. D.)
(Read Mark 13:30).
G. WATCHFULNESS is demanded!
(Mark 13:32-37). This would not only apply
to the destruction of Jerusalem in the first century, but also to the SECOND
COMING OF CHRIST!

III. Events Leading Up To The Betrayal Of Jesus And The Trial To Follow
(Mark 14:1-72)
A. The Anointing at Bethany

(Mark 14:1-9)

1. The feast of Unleavened Bread, was TWO DAYS away. This is probably
the Fourth Day of this last week, the week of crucifixion
2. The chief priests and scribes were seeking a strategy to seize Jesus, but, if they
did it during the Feast, there might be a RIOT! Read also Luke 22:1.
3. Mary anointed the Lord with NARD, from an aromatic herb. She anointed
His head (Mark 14:3), but also His feet (John 12:3).
4. The disciples objected (Matthew 26:8), but it was JUDAS who voiced this
objection. Judas was a THIEF who did NOT care for the poor
(John 12:4-6)

5. Jesus stated that she had done a good work

(Mark 14:6-9)

6. Jesus was anointed for burial, but the POOR would always be with them. Note
New Testament help for the POOR (Acts 2:43-47; 4:32-37; 11:27-30;
Galatians 2:10).
B. The PLOT to BETRAY Jesus

(Mark 14:10, 11)

1. Evidently, Judas was only concerned about EARTHLY REWARDS.

2. The chief priests were delighted to get the help of Judas. What did Judas
think about this? Did he think that Jesus could miraculously escape?
Was he just disgusted with the nature of Jesus preaching and kingdom?
C. The Passover Feast

(Mark 14:12-26)

The Fifth Day

1. Other events that took place at this time:

3. During the Passover, Jesus announced that one of them would betray
Him
(Mark 14:17-21)

14:22-26). Read also Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:19, 20.

(Mark

a. The only type of bread used during the Feast was unleavened
bread, for the Feast of Unleavened Bread is associated with the
Passover
b. This is my body, etc. is a construction called a metaphor. Read
a similar phrase, I am the vine (John 15:1, 5)
5. Jesus foretold Peters DENIAL
(Mark 14:27-31). The quotation about
the shepherd being smitten is taken from Zechariah 13:7.
a. Peter vehemently denied that he would deny.
b. However, Jesus gave the exact time when it would happen
(Mark 14:30, 31)
D. The Garden of Gethsemane

(Mark 14:32-42)

Beginning of the Sixth Day

1. Jesus was deeply distressed, and overcome with sorrow

2. Peter, James, and John went with Him to PRAY. Then, He left them.
3. Jesus prayed. The continuous action tense suggests that He knelt and finally
fell on the ground. Study also Hebrews 5:7 which suggests that there was,
at this time, many tears shed by Jesus.

4. When Jesus prayed, He used both Aramaic, Abba and Greek, pater for
father. (Mark 14:36)
5. Jesus said, BUT, not what I will. This strong word, BUT suggests
complete SUBMISSION to the Will of the Father (Mark 14:36)
6. An ANGEL ministered to Jesus
E. The BETRAYAL and ARREST

(Luke 22:43)

(Mark 14:43-54)

1. When Judas KISSED Jesus in a despicable act, Jesus gave Himself up to be

arrested. He could have called 12 legions of angels
(Matthew 26:53).
2. Peter cut off the right ear of Malchus (Mark 14:47; Luke 22:50, 51;
John 18:10)
3. Note that the SHEEP were SCATTERED!

(Mark 14:47-50)

4. The young man who ran away is thought by some to be Mark. Only Mark
records this
(Mark 14:51, 52).
F. The TRIAL before the COUNCIL, the Sanhedrin

(Mark 14:55-65)

1. Jesus had been taken FIRST before ANNAS, the father-in-law of the High
Priest, Caiaphas
(John 18:12-14)
2. Witnesses were sought, but the only ones to be found were false witnesses
(Mark 14:55-59)
3. Jesus had been speaking of raising His own body, the temple of His body
(Study John 2:19-22)
4. Jesus affirmed that He was the Christ, the Son of the Blessed (Mark 14:51, 52)
He was condemned to DIE!
(Mark 14:63-65)
G. Peter DENIED his Lord

(Mark 14:66-72)

1. A doorkeeper, a maid asked Peter about being with Jesus (John 18:17)
