IgotmyelectricaltrainingasanapprenticebecauseIwantedtobecomeanelectrician.
LaterIlearnedaboutelectrictheoryfromatechnicalcollegeasIapplieditto
telecommunicationsandresidentialelectricalwiring.
IwentintoelectronicstrainingbecauseIwastiredofworkingoutsideintheharsh
weather.Myveryfirstjobaftertradeschoolwasacozyindoorjobworkingoncomputer
networkcommunicationlines.Accordingtomyluck,thatsamejobswitchedfromT1
datalinestosatellitewirelesssystemsandIfoundmyselfworkingontherooftopsout
inthecoldagainforanother11years.
Anyway,that'sthelifeofelectricaltechnicians.
Fromstarttofinish,IwilladdresstheElectricalinstallationinitsmanyaspectsand
components,startingwithwiringtheserviceentrance.
ThenI'llgiveabreakdownoncablesandwiringforabetterunderstandingofhow
electricityisused.It'salsonecessarytohaveagoodunderstandingofbreakersandfuses
topreventoverloads.
Simplelightingcircuitsareeasytoinstall,yetstillneedasmalllevelofskill.Complex
lightingcircuitstakealittleheadscratchingtofigureout,butI'vemadesomegood
diagramsofthese.
Thebigbadboysthatneedspecialattentionarethededicatedhighvoltagecircuits.
Theseneedtobedonecorrectly.
Nextonthelistisphoneanddoorbellwiring.Thisiseasyandfun.Everyhomeneedsto
havecomputernetworkwiringtoconnecttoallcomputersinyourhomeandtoprevent
spyingfromnosyneighborsbecauseyouthoughtwirelesswasagoodidea.Finally,all
homesshouldhaveCableandsatelliteTVwiringjusttobepreparedforthefuture.
We'llstartoffwithsometerminology.Weusedtorefertoelectricalcircuitsas110volts
and220volts.Wenowrefertothemas120voltsand240volts.Theactualvoltageis

rightaround119volts.Thisvariesfromplacetoplace,butyoumightstillhearit
referredtoas110volts.Manydiagramelectricalwiringcircuitsstillusethisterm.
Don'tworry,somepeoplecan'tletgoofthepast.Forusmodernfolk,it's120volt
circuits.A240voltdiagramelectricalwiringcircuitisjusttwo120voltcircuitsput
togetherforthatextrabitofumph!Ovens,waterheaters,clothesdryers,and
HVAC(heating,venting,andairconditioning)systemsneedalittleextravoltage,sowe
givethemtwohotlinesinsteadofone.I'llgooveritalittleatatime.Wedomostofthe
workwithnonmetallicsheathedcable,butI'mjustgoingtorefertoitasRomex.
Almosteveryelectricalcontractorusesthisterm.Romexcomesindifferentsizesand
kindsforspecialuses.Thetypeofwireismarkedonboththecableandtheboxitcomes
in.
Forexample"122"firstdescribesthethicknessofthewire,being12gaugewire.The
"2"saysthereare2servicewiresinside.Thatisahot(black)wireandaneutral(white)
wire.Thereisalsoabarecoppergroundwire.Iknowthatmakesthreewiresintotal,but
thegrounddoesn'tcount.Whynot?Idon'tknow!Wealljustkindofgoalongwiththat
one.
So,"123"saysthereisthreewiresinthere.Thereisanextrahot(red)wireforthree
wayswitches.I'llgooverthattoo.Seethepics.Mostdiagramelectricalwiringcircuits
don'tsayRomexonthecables,don'tworryaboutit.It'sacommontermatelectric
supplyplaces.
Thegaugetellshowthickthewireis.Thelowerthegauge,thethickerthewire.
Naturally,thicker,heavierwirecantoleratemoreelectricalcurrentwithoutgettingtoo
hot.Diagramelectricalwiringcircuitsusuallywon'thavethetypeandsizeofcable
listed.It'sjustkindofaknownthingthatlightsandoutletsuse12gaugecable.

Let'sbegintheactualworkbyputtingelectricalboxesinwherevertherewillbeasinglelightswitch,
anoutlet,aphonejack,oradataport.Lightswitchesthathavemorethanoneswitchwillrequirea
biggerbox.
Thesearesomeoftheboxtypesyoucanuse.Somelocationswon'tletyouuseplasticboxes.The
placeswhereyougetelectricsuppliescanusuallytellyouthecodefortheboxes.
Oncealltheboxesareinplace,youcanstartrunningcable.Youwillneedtohavethe
cablesrunfromboxtoboxbeforeyourfirstElectricalinspection.Theydon'thavetobe
connectedtoanything,butallthewiresshouldberunandthewiringinspectedbefore
thedrywallgoeson.Theexperiencedelectricalcontractorwillhavetheworkinspected
beforethesheetrockgoeson.
Forlightsandreceptacles,youcanuse122Romexfortheelectrical.Somelocations
stillallow142Romex,butIthinkthatisnolongeradequateforanelectricsupply.Any
diagramelectricalwiringplanshouldhaveadequatewiringforfutureexpansion.

Mostoutletreceptacleshavefourterminalscrews,twooneachside,twoneutralandtwohot.They
arewiredsothatthecircuitiscontinuous.
Amorepracticalmethodinwiringreceptaclesiscalled"pigtailing".Pigtailinguseswirenutsto
consolidatewiressothatonlyonewiregoestoeachterminal.ThisisespeciallynecessaryinGround
FaultInterrupterCircuits.
Pigtailing,forexample,takesbothendsoftheneutralwire(incomingandoutgoing)and
joinsthembothtogetheralongwithathirdwhitewirethatgoestotheterminal.Youwill
dothiswiththeblackwireandthecopperwirealsoinplasticboxes.Theexperienced
electricalcontractorusespigtailsalot.
We'lldoasimplelightcircuitnext.TheRomexcomesfromthecircuittothelightfirst,
thenontotheswitch.Thisishowitlooks.Keepinmindthatthereareseveralwaysof

Speakingof3wirecable,Romex123hasablackwireforhot,aredwirecalleda
travelerwiredesignatedashotalso,andawhitewireforneutral.Thisishandyin3way
switches.
Youwilluse103Romexoncertainothercircuits.Theremightbeothercode
requirementssoaskyourinspectorbeforeputtinginwires.
Thewaterheaterwillbeadedicatedcircuitona30Ampbreakerwith103Romexin
mostcases.Thiswillbehardwired,meaningitdoesn'thaveanoutletreceptaclelikethe
dryerandovendo.Itwillhaveacablethatcomesoutofthewallsurroundedinconduit
andgoesintothewaterheatertobeconnectedinside.
Theclothesdryerwillalsobeonadedicated30Ampcircuitwith103Romex.
TheOven/rangewillbetheelectricalbigbadboyonthededicated50Ampbreaker
usingrangecable.Thisisaspecialcablemadeforthispurpose.Whatitusuallyis,isa
biggnarlycablethathastwo6gaugecables,one8gaugeneutral,andan8gauge
coppergroundinside.
Ourdiagramelectricalwiringplanwillincludealldetailsofeachcircuit.Allthecircuits

Thetypeofbreakerboxisthechoiceoftheelectricalcontractorandthelocalcodes,but
mostcodesstatethattheelectricsupplyandthebreakerboxbea200Ampservicewith
atleast30breakers.
200Ampsisgoodenoughforthecurrentneeds,but30breakerslotsistoofewfor
modernhouses.Youshouldhaveatleast40slots.

overwhelmingatfirst.Onceitisalldonethough,you'llreallybegladyoufollowedall
theregs.Itmakesabetterhouseanyway.
SERVICEENTRANCEBASICELECTRICALWIRING
INHOMECONSTRUCTION
Thisistheserviceentranceparttobasicelectricalwiringforelectricityofresidential
dwellings.Nowthisiswherethefunreallybegins,butthisisalsowherealotoffirst
timebuildersstarttodoubtthemselves.Iamgoingtostartwiththebasicsandmove
throughtheentireprocess,butIllkeepitveryunderstandableatthesametime.Now,
itsnotmyintentiontodiscourageorfrightenanyonefromdoingtheirownelectrical
work,butrespectforElectricityneedstobeobservedandneverputaside.Ifyoulose
yourrespectfortheselinesatanytime,youstandagoodchanceoffinalizingyourlife
insurancepolicy.Thereisnoreasonatanytimetobeworkingonalivecircuit,
especiallya240voltline.
TherearedetailedinstructionsavailablefromtheNEC(NationalElectricalCode)that
canbeusedasabasicguidelineforallbasicelectricalwiring,butlocalcodesfromthe
BuildinginspectorsandElectricalInspectorsalwaystakepriorityovernationalcodes.
LocalElectricalInspectorsareaverygoodsourceofinformationbecausetheyarethe
onesholdingupthehoopsweallhavetojumpthrough.Inallhonesty,IamverygladI
wasforcedtojumpthroughalotofhoopsfrommyinspectors,althoughatthetimeI
wasreallybent.
WhenIsleepatnight,Iknowthefusesandcircuitsandwiresarentoverloadedbecause
thatinspectormademetearthemoutandredothem,twice.Letsgetstartedfromthe
beginningassumingthatyouarestillusingthetemporarypowerhookuptheutility
companyriggedupforyou.Itsbeenastrugglewithonlyafewoutlets.Nowitstimefor
somerealpower!Theutilitycompanyprovidingtotheelectricsupplywillputupthe
meterandbase.Everythingafterthatorrather,thelinesgoingtotheservicepaneland
allthecircuitryandfusesarethehomeownersresponsibility.Letsstartoutbyfirst
makingabasicelectricalwiringplanforwherewewanteverythingtobelocated.Itisa
goodideatodecidewheretoputtheservicepanel.TheElectricalInspectorwillhave
someadviceonthismatter.Therearespecificrequirementsthatcantbe
compromised.Theservicepanelwillbeontheinsideofthehouseandwillholdallthe
fuses.Allthecircuitwireswillbeconnectedtoit.Theservicepanelneedstobeclose
(usuallywithinafewfeet)totheserviceentranceormeterontheoutsidewallofthe
house.Asmartelectricalcontractorwillputtheservicepanelinaconvenientlocation.
Theservicepanelwillhavetobeaspecificheightanddistancefromthefloor.Also,the
meterwillneedtobeaccessibleforthepowercompany.Thismeansthatwhereverthe
serviceentranceisontheoutsideofthehouse,theservicepanelontheinsideofthe
housewillhavetobejustaboutontheothersideofthewall.
Sodontputalivingroomthereonthatsideofthehousebecauseabreakerboxmakes
forapoorconversationpiecewhileentertainingguests.Agarageorutilityroomwould
beabetteroptiontohousetheservicepanelbox.TheElectricalInspectorwillhelpyou
withthedetailsofanybasicelectricalwiringfortheservicepanelplacement.The
illustrationbelowshowsaserviceentranceandmeterwithanoverheadsupply.This
helpsshowtheproximitybetweentheserviceentranceoutsideandtheservicepanel
inside.
Theutilitycompanywillwiretheserviceusuallytothemeter,thenfromthemeter,you
runheavygaugecablesthroughthewallintotheservicepanelboxandconnectthemto
thehotterminalbus.Thetypeofcableusedfromthemetertotheservicepanelis

somethinglike#000Aluminumratedatabout200amps,andthereareusually3ofthem
providingenoughcurrentfora200ampservice.
Theillustrationshowsatypicaltypeofabasicelectricalwiringservicecableusedin
residentialdwellings.Thiswillusuallyhaveablackcovering.Thisisaservicepanel
thatiscommonlyused.Itisalsoknownasabreakerbox,oraloadcenter.
Whenconsideringaservicepanel,theminimumrequirementthatIwouldrecommend
wouldbea200amp,40slotloadcenter.Thehigheramperageratingisacode
requirementinmostparts,buttheslotsforbreakersisoftenleftuptotheelectrician.An
owner/buildermightbetemptedtooptforasmallerandcheaperservicepanelwith
fewerslots,butinspectorsarebecomingrealsticklersondedicatedelectricalcircuits.
Therearemanynewcoderegulationsthatdidntusedtoexistsooneneedstoplanfor

thefuture.Sonowthatweknowwhatthebasicelectricalwiringserviceentrance,the
meter,andtheservicepanelare,letsgetthemallwiredtogether.Youcangetthewire
atanelectricsupplystore.Youwillconnectallthewiringandhavetopassyourfirst
inspectionbeforetheElectricalInspectorwillgivetheutilitycompanypermissionto
connectthepower.Thatsagoodthinganyway,becauseyouwillbeworkingwithtwo
120voltcablesandaneutralcable,threewiresinall.Theywontbeenergizeduntil
everythingissealedupandsecured.Thepicturebelowillustrateshowthe3wireservice
leavesthemeterandendsupinsidetheservicepanelbox.The2blackwiresarethen
connectedtothehotbus,andthewhiteorneutralisconnectedtotheneutralbus.
Therearespecialconduitfittingsavailableatmostelectricsupplystoresthatmakethejoblookmore
professionalandalsohelpkeepmoistureout.
Youcanuseeitheraholesaworalargespadebittomaketheholeinthewallforthepowercables.
Oncethepowerservicefromthemeterandtheservicepanelboxareconnected,thenyouwillneed
torunasystemgroundwiretoagroundingrod.
Thegroundingwireisjustacopperwiremadeforthatpurpose.Itattachestoagroundingscrew
usuallyatthebottomoftheneutralbus.
Thecopperlinetypicallyexitsthroughthesideofthehousetowardthebottomandattachestothe
groundingrodortheplumbingifmetalpipesareused.
Groundingrodsareabout4feetlongandmadeofcopper.Theycanbehammeredinclosetothe
foundation.
Yourservicepanelboxorbreakerboxwillholdallthebreakersorfusesandeverycircuitruninthe
housewillbeginatthebreaker.Thehotlinesareeitherblackorredwires.
Eachelectricalhousewiringcircuitrunbeginswithahotline(blackorred)connectedtothe
breaker,aneutralline(usuallywhite)connectedtotheneutralbusbar,andagroundwire(bare
copper)alsoattachedtotheneutralbusbar.
Fromthere,itgoesoutofthebreakerboxandontothefirstoutlet,(receptacle)orswitch,(lights)or
hardwiredappliance(waterheater,electricwallheatersandheatpumps).
Thebreakerboxhasremovableroundtabsonallfoursidesgivingaccesstothewiring.Romexisa
commonnameforcableandoneIusefrequently.Itsimportanttonotethatwhenacableentersthe
servicepanel,theholeneedstohaveafastenerorclamptopreventthemetalboxfrompossibly
cuttingthewires.

Thisshouldgiveusagoodideahowthebreakerboxisputtogether.Fromthispoint,its
amatteroflayingoutthemanycircuitsandmappingthemthroughoutthehouse.The
dedicatedelectricalhousewiringcircuitswillbetheeasiesttomapoutbecausethe
entirecircuitgoestojustoneappliancesuchastherange,orthewaterheater,orthe
clothesdryertonameafew.Theseareallpowerhogsandnotonlydotheyneedtheir
owndedicatedcircuit,buttheyalsousehigheramperagebreakersandheaviergauge
wiring.
Therearetwokindsofvoltagesusedinresidentialdwellings,120voltforlightsand
smallapplianceoutlets,and240voltforlargerappliances.Thebreakersdeterminethe
differencebetweenthetwovoltages.
A120voltbreakerisnarrowandonlyattachestoonehotbusintheservicepanel.That
givesit120voltsofelectricity.Thebiggnarly240voltbreakershowever,arewideand
coverbothhotbusbarsgivingthemalltheelectricityavailable,whichis240volts.
Noticethedifferenceinwidthsbetweenbreakers.Also,thelargerapplianceshave
varyinglevelsofelectricalcurrentneeds,sothebreakersarealsoavailableindifferent
amperageratings.Letsmakeacoupleofchartswiththesymbolsandnumberswewill
needtolayoutagoodelectricalfloorplanfromthispoint.Thesearethesymbolsused
foranelectricalhousewiringfloorplantoshowtheinspector.Italsohelpstokeep
thingsorganizedonpaper.Theillustrationbelowshowsausefulchartofappliances
alongwiththesizeofwire,sizeofbreaker,voltagerequirements,andtherequired
receptacle.

Almosteverythingelseinthehousewillusea120volt,20ampcircuit.Ifyouhave
electricheat,youwillneedtofindoutthespecificationsonvoltageandamperage
becausesomeheatersuse120voltsandothersuse240volts.Usuallythehighervoltage
heatersrunmoreefficiently.
Ithelpstomakeatopviewoftheelectricalhousewiringfloorplanwiththedifferent
symbols.Itmaylooklikeamessatfirstbecausetherearesomanysymbolsinsucha
smallareatoworkwithonpaper,butyoullgetusedtoseeingandunderstandingthe
diagramsandblueprintslongbeforeyoubeginconstructionontheactualcircuitry.The
illustrationbelowshowsasimpleelectricalfloorplanwithoutlets,switches,andlights.I
founditusefultomakeseveralcopiesofthesamefloorplanwithoutalltheelectrical
symbols,andthenmakeanoverlaydiagramofeachelectricalcircuitstartingwithcircuit
number1.Youwillneedtonumberyourcircuitrunsatthebreakerboxanyway,so
thisisagoodtimeplanitout.Oneachplan,includeonlyonecircuitrunevenifitisjust
yourwaterheaterorcookingrange.Drawthecircuitryexactlyhowitwillrunthrough
thewallsandjoistsandevenincludemeasurementsintheplansifyouwantto.
Youmightevenwanttolaminatetheplansbecausetheywillhelpyouyearslaterwhen
youretryingtorememberwhereyouranthosedarnwires.
Thediagramscanbeeasyorcomplexbecausetheyarentforanyonebutyou.Theideaistosimplify
somethingthatisintimidating.ThatsthewholeideabehindeverythingIstandfor.Ifsomethingis
overwhelmingandseeminglyimpossibletounderstand,stepbackabit,scratchyourheadafew
times,thenbreakitdowninyourmindtothesmalleststepsorparticlesnecessary.Whenyoustartto

willwanttodivideupthecircuitswithtwomajorpointsinmind.First,andmostimportant,isthat
youdontputtoomanyloadsononeline.Thatmakesforhotwiresandyoullwearyourcarpetsout
runningbackandforthresettingbreakers.Asaruleofthumb,youprobablydontwanttoputany
morethan15loadsononecircuit.Aloadisanoutlet,appliance,orlightswitch.Bothplugsonan
outletorreceptacleareoneload.Thisisoneofthosethingsthatvarygreatlyfromregiontoregionso
youllneedtoconsultyourlocalcodebook.Thatisoneofthereasonsyouaregoingtoneedalarge
servicepanelbox.Mostresidentialdwellingswillusearound30breakerslotsthesedays.
Thesecondreasontodivideupyourelectricalhousewiringcircuitrunsistoavoidtotaldarkness
whenabreakertrips.Keepthatinmindwhileplanningcircuitroutes.Romexischeapanditseasy
torun,sotrytoatleastintegratethelightingintoseveraldifferentcircuits.Inotherwords,dontrun
allyourlightsononecircuit.
RUNNINGCABLESANDWIRING
Now,letsgetstartedontheactualcablesandwiringcircuitruns.Firstwewillworkon
switchesandoutletsasthesearethemainfocusofthispage.Thelowervoltagecircutrunswill
comelater.Iliketoputallthereceptacleandswitchboxesinfirst.Thesecanbeeitherplastic
ormetaldependingmostlyonthehomeownerschoice,butinsomelocations,onlymetalboxes
areallowed.
ThisalsoincludesLIGHTBOXES ,ormoreoftencalledjunctionboxes.Theseattachreallyeasy.
Theyhaveasheetrockdepthcalibrationalreadyonthemsoyougetagoodaccuratefitwithout
havingtomeasure.
Mostboxescanjustbenailedinplace.Everyoutlet,lightswitch,junctionbox,andevenmodernday
phonejackswillneedabox.Youcangettheseboxesinmanysizesdependingonyourneeds.You
willprobablyusealotmoreboxesthanyoudexpect,buttheyredirtcheap.Itsimportantthateach
boxisnailedevenlytothewallstud,butitsalsoimportanttomakesurethattheboxextendsbeyond
thestudevenly.Ifthenailsaretootightonthetoporthebottom,theplasticboxwillnotbeso
squareanymore.Thesearemistakesthatarentcoveredupbythefinishworkbecausetheswitches
andoutletswillappearslightlycrookedwheneverythingisdone.Also,itsjustagoodideatoputa
reinforcedjunctionboxinwhereeverylightwillbe.Theseareavailableatallelectricsuppliers.
Abracketortelescopingrodseemslikeoverkillatthetime,butsomewhereinthefuture
eitheryouorsomeonewillwanttoputupaceilingfan,achandelier,orsomething
heavyanditsmuchhardertoreinforceafinishedceilingthantoinstallacheap$2.00
pieceofmetalwhiletheceilingisexposed.Thebarhangerjunctionboxgivesmore
supportthananormalhangerbracket.

Oncetheboxesareinstalled,thewirescanberunfromboxtobox.
Youwillneedtoleaveextrawireforworkingwith.Itsalwaysagoodideatoleavean
extra6to8inchesofwireinaloopjustabovewherethecableentersthebox.Thisis
importantforallcablesandwiringapplications.Thisloopwillallowforamarginof
errorwhenstrippingwires.Trytodrillalltheholesinthestudsatthesameheighttorun
