PRELIMINARY COMPETENCE:
All students should have a good knowledge of their native language, its grammar; get acquainted
with the linguistic system of the English language; have basic knowledge of English grammar at
school level and know how to use it in practice.
INTERDISCIPLINARY COMPETENCE:
The subject English Grammar (Morphology) is closely connected with other subjects studied
at the department, such as: analytical reading, phonetics, linguistics, literature. The background
knowledge of students is also very important.
THE POSITION OF THE SUBJECT IN THE ACADEMIC PLAN.
English Grammar (Morphology) belongs to the basic specialized subjects at the department. It is
a practical course but it is preceded by short theoretical assumptions. The students who study and
use the English Language are mainly interested in how they can do things with the language
how they can make meanings, get attention to their problems and interests and create a rich
social life for themselves. The grammatical structure of any language is a means of getting these
aims.
The programme covers all main of English morphology. All parts of speech are examined
separately and compared with the native language (Russian, Romanian). The grammar rules are
trained with the help of practical exercises and are given in the text.
GENERAL AIMS:
to develop the correct speech of students on the correct grammar patterns in the
process of their comprehension, reproduction and use in sentences;
to compare the English grammar rules and patterns with the ones of the native
language;
to be able to find the substitutions in the process of comparison in case if the grammar
patterns do not coincide in two languages.
These aims help students achieve the following goals:
a sense of appropriateness as to when and how to use this or that structure;
perception of a relationship between grammatical structures and three other
dimensions of language, such as: social functions, semantics (meaning), discourse
pragmatics.
FORMATIVE AIMS:
At the end of the course of lectures and seminars the students should have the following
competences:
A. Gnoseologic Competence (Knowledge):
to know all parts of speech in English and compare them with their native language;
to distinguish between the notional and functional parts of speech;
to explain the different grammar phenomena in the English language;
to distinguish between the flexible and fixed patterns;

to know the terminology used in Morphology;


to know the morphological system of the English language;
to distinguish between phonemic, morphemic and phrasemic levels of a language.
B. Praxiologic Competence:
to listen and respond to the utterances using morphological patterns;
to write and speak correctly;
to see the mistakes in the written works of fellow-students and correct them;
to pay special attention and to be able to recognize the functional parts of speech in
the sentence and text;
to use correct constructions while doing oral and written translation;
to compare morphological constructions in the English and native languages.
C. Research Competence:
to know the main grammar rules on word formation;
to distinguish grammar phenomena in the utterances;
to be able to do the structural analysis of all parts of speech;
to know the categorical characteristics of all parts of speech;
to know the grammatical meanings of the words;
to use the praxiologic and gnoseologic knowledge in the investigation while working
over diploma papers.

INDIVIDUAL WORK:
The students must make up sentences; translate sentences from Romanian/Russian into English
and by vice versa; make up stories; analyse different sentences from the exercises and from
different texts.

MODE OF ASSESSMENT:
At the end of the course the knowledge of the subject is assessed at the examination which is
done in a written form. The tasks included in the examination card can be as it follows:
to read the text and complete the gaps with the correct form of the word (nouns,
pronouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositions);
to transform the sentences changing nouns into pronouns;
to change the sentences using pro-forms;
to change the words by transforming prefixes and suffixes;
to use the equivalents of the modal verbs;
to change the forms of the finite verbs according to tenses.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EXAMINATION:
The examination is taken in a written form, and it is preceded by a test. The test consists of
20 questions on the problems studied during the course. Each question corresponds to 0.5
points. The mark is evaluated according to the number of correct answers.
STRATEGY OF EVALUATION:
1. Correct answers to all questions contained in the test 50%
2. Correct answers to all questions from the examination card 50%
