PRELIMINARY COMPETENCE:
All students should have a good knowledge of their native language, its grammar; get acquainted
with the linguistic system of the English language.
INTERDISCIPLINARY COMPETENCE:
The subject Lexicology is closely connected with other subjects studied at the department,
such as: phonetics, linguistics, history of the language, grammar and sociolinguistics. The
background knowledge of students is also very important.
THE POSITION OF THE SUBJECT IN THE ACADEMIC PLAN.
English Lexicology belongs to the basic specialized subjects at the department. It is a theoretical
course helping to set connections with different subjects. The students who study and use the
English Language are mainly interested in how they can do things with the language how they
describe the system of formation of the English words, classify the vocabulary, establish the
semantic ties between the words used in different periods of the English language, compare the
English language with their native languages.
GENERAL AIMS:
the comprehensive understanding of the general notions and concepts of the English
Lexicology;
the acquisition of the theoretical and practical knowledge about the English word and
the lexico-semantic system of the English language;
the formation of the necessary competences to apply the theoretical knowledge in
practice.
FORMATIVE AIMS:
At the end of the course of lectures and seminars the students should have the following
competences:
A. Gnoseologic Competence (Knowledge):
to distinguish the object of lexicology;
to explain the causes that brought to the changes of the semantic structure of the
vocabulary;
to identify the main phases of evolution of the English vocabulary;
to determine the socio-linguistic factors that change the Germanic character of the
English vocabulary;
to describe the system of formation of the English words;
to relate the functional styles and the stylistic synonymy;
to set the connection between lexicology and other branches of science;
B. Praxiologic Competence:
to correctly use the words in different contexts;
to compare the changes produced in the semantic structure of words;
to establish the semantic ties between the words used in different periods of the
English language;

to apply the lexicological knowledge in lexicography, terminological standardization,


acquisition of information; etc.;
to set etymological connections of different lexemes;
C. Research Competence:
to evaluate the place and importance of Lexicology of the English Language in the
context of other philological disciplines;
to realize the lexicological analysis of the texts in the frame of analytical reading;
to establish the functional correlation of the ontic and gnoseological plan in the frame
of English Lexicology;
to integrate the knowledge of the Lexicology of the English Language in his/her
formation as a specialist of new type;
to elaborate projects of scientific research in the domain of lexicology.

MODE OF ASSESSMENT:
At the end of the course the knowledge of the subject is assessed at the examination which is
taken orally. The tasks included in the examination card can be as it follows:
to answer the theoretical questions (not less than 2);
to take into consideration the marks from the seminars.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE EXAMINATION:
The exam is taken orally and is preceded by seminars. All students should answer during the
seminars and get marks. According to the answers during the seminars the students get the
current marks.

STRATEGY OF EVALUATION:
1. Current evaluation at seminars - 40%
2. Correct answers to the questions of the card during the examination - 60%
THE VALUE OF THE EXAMINATION MARKS:

- all questions during seminars are answered correctly. Additional material is used
during the answers and the thesis on the topic of the subject is prepared ad defended
during exam

translated.
