6.1.2. Initiatives by the Department to create facilities for improving the

quality of experiments (25) (15)
Laboratory experiences powerful tools in the engineering education system,
since the laboratory is the primary location to develop the skills and
competences thatindustry requires. A student is expected to work in a laboratory
for 40-50% of the time. Thus, the laboratory has become an extremely
important place of learning.
Initiatives By the Department
Areas considered include designing innovative laboratory experiences,
modifications in experimental set-up, variations in the experimental process,
visual laboratory manuals, micro-demonstrations, improvements in assessment
schemes, project work, etc. It was found that such innovations increased
students interest levels in laboratory work, and the experimental methods
adopted were better suited to competence development.

1. Selecting and converting some simpler lab experiments in to classroom

demos or Lab demos. Planning to conduct these Demonstrations by
either by faculty or by students to improve their skills' outcomes.
2. Designing a variety of Lab experiences to achieve different employability
skills along with currucular abilities.
3. Compiling all such lab experiences in the form of a Lab manual with
adequate hints for delivering experiences and assessing the learning
outcomes
4. Selecting a micro, minor and major project work for integrating a number
of emplyability skills jointly by faculty and concerened students
5. Approaches to Guiding students through micro, Minor and major projects
6. Assessing the learning outcomes from different stages of project work.
APPROACHES TO LABORATORY INNOVATION
Important approaches to innovation are those that, if planned and implemented
properly, can bring about positive change by focusing on laboratory
instruction. This should lead to the effective development of students skills.
Such key approaches involve the following:
1.Graded laboratory experiment design;
2.Modifications in experimental set-up;
3.Variations in the experimental process;
4.Visual laboratory manuals;
5.Micro-demonstrations;
6.Improvements in assessment schemes;
7.Project work
Implementation
As a part of above mentioned initiatives,Department of Mechanical Engineering
has been scheduled the
1. Lead Experiments in Laboratories
2. Advanced technology laboratory (ATL)

3. Laboratory Improvement for future trends.(LIFT)

Lead Experiments in Laboratories

Innovations can be carried out in laboratory experiments by making some
modifications to various equipment, set-ups, etc, changing the material to
be tested is another, still another modification can be brought about by
changing tools used in the experi-ment and so on. In many of the
experiments, students can be provided with the opportunity to select
equip-ment, instruments and tools to achieve the desired objectives of the
laboratory work. This will help them acquire better inquiry skills

GUIDELINES FOR LEAD EXPERIMENT:

a. A Lead Experiment is selected apart from all the other experiments
that covered in JNTU Syllabus.
b. This experiment is exclusively new idea with the background from the
rest of the experiments that continuously running in each laboratory.
c. Lead experiment should utilize the existing resources within the
laboratory itself.
d. Every student should aware of Lead Experiment and himself involved
in doing and knowing about the experimental technique.
e. A separate page is provided to record lead experiment in record book
stating all details like Aim, Procedure and Record of Results.
f. A Lead experiment should be a unique one from all the other
experiments.
g. Each Lab Staff/Technicians must clearly explain all the students about
the concept of Lead Experiment and make them understand before going to that
Experiment.

2.Advanced technology laboratory (ATL)

The main objective of Advanced technology laboratory is students was able to
learn about the various design and analysis software packages in mechanical
engineering program during the four year engineering course.
1. In the view of this Advanced Technology laboratory, We are teaching
following Mechanical engineering related design and analysis software
packages in regular class time table.

AutoCAD software
Catia Software
Anysys Software
CNC part Programming

3.Laboratory Improvement for future trends.(LIFT)

1. OBJECTIVES AND RELEVANCE:
The main objective of the Lift concept in lab course is to provide practical
hands on experience for each student by making them with good exposure to
different experiments and uplift the knowledge levels of student in various
fields with different applications.
2. SCOPE:
The main scope of the Lift lab course is to cover all the experiments as
per the schedule given in the prescribed week wise periods. With this, a

student can better understand the concepts and operating systems so that he
could be able to get better knowledge abou each lab.
3. PREREQUISITES:
The basic level idea related to each experiment should be provided to the
students before conducting main lab course Following details are to be
explained related to experiment:
a. Introduction to experiment 30 min
b. Operating of the equipment/instrument/software
c. Record of Experimental results.
d. Sample Calculations / Executable Programmes
I. Aim of the Lift Programme:
The main aim of the Lift programme in laboratory is to innovate, modify the
existing facilities in labs, to create awareness among the students and develop
Industry Institution interactions and reach the standards in laboratories.
II. Functions of the Lift Programme:
(i) To create better understanding among all the staff and lab staff.
/technicians about the concepts of Lift and other lab related activities.
(ii) To Prepare Gap Analysis: This involves collection of requirements
from each Lab of every department, information about expansion of labs,
repairs and maintenance of labs etc.
(v) To arrange Industrial Visits: A lab and lift related industrial visit will
be organized in a year for II or III year students and a report is to be submitted
by all the students who visited that particular industry.
(vi) A report on Smart (Shadow) Engineering: This involves arrangement
of Industria practical learnings, submission of Industrial visit report, Technical
Survey reports and Market Survey of a product for development in laboratories.
(vii) Verification of all the laboratories in every department by Lift Team
along with the Principal and Concerned HODs to check whether the activities
are going according to Lift guidelines, record keeping, Lab Manuals and Viva
sessions etc.
(viii) Check for LEAD Experiments and its follow up

(ix) Submission of proposals related to R&D, Project and Consultancy

from lab staff to
Principal Sir for further approvals.
3.Effectiveness:
By Implementing these initiatives
1. Lead Experiments in Laboratories
2. Advanced technology laboratory (ATL)
3. Laboratory Improvement for future trends. (LIFT)
Students are successfully implementing their own skills and ideas for doing Hobby
Projects, Mini projects and Major projects.
