Dibrugarh.
The Report isbasedon the Data Collected from the Various
Vendors We Interact With.
The Various Market We Gone Through is as follows
1. New Market Bazaar
2. ArunudoyGramyaHattBazaar, Near Over bridge.

This Report is about the challenges faced by the vendors in

their day to day selling activity.

MARKET FUNCTION

ARUNUDOY GRAMYA HATT BAZAAR:

This bazaar charges a rent of Rs 10 from the vendors;
irrespective of area occupied. The fees need to be paid to a
official of the Municipal committee.
Vendors of this market mainly belong from
areas of Jokai, Borpothar and Bogibeel.
The stocks are either brought from their
respective villages or from New Market Bazaar; which has few
wholesalers of vegetables and other items.
For transportation the vendors rely on
services provided by various vehicles for hire; only a few
vendors transport goods themselves. Usually a few vendors
form a group and hire a single vehicle to transport their goods.
The vendors face a few problems regarding
the transport factor as in many situations various
1

disagreements occur between them and the vehicle owners

regarding the charge of transportation of goods.
No storage facility is available for this
market. The vendors specifically feel that a storage facility is
needed; as quite a hefty amount of goods are wasted, as they
decompose over time without any proper storage facility.
NEW MARKET :

This market charges a rent of Rs

1.25/square feet of area occupied, per day, from the vendors.
The vendors here mainly belong to Lohar
patty and Panchali areas.
A few vendors from this market provide
goods at wholesale prices to other vendors in the town.
The goods are acquired from either the
local agriculturalists or brought in from other states depending
upon the agricultural calendar.
Here too no proper storage facility is
available. The goods are kept in the market itself. The vendors
here also rue the absence of proper storage facilities.

PROBLEMS FACED:
2

The main problems faced; according to the

vendors is the problem of transport and storage.
Storage of goods is a major problem for the vendors, as there
are no proper cold storage facilities. The goods usually rot over
time; leading to mass wastage.
Further the transport problem is also quite
horrendous. Many a vendors state angrily that even though
with the decreasing price of petrol and diesel in the country,
yet transportation costs have not come down.
