Taxes would remain flat

with discussed budget
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Medford Township residents
could be looking forward to another year with no tax increase
on their municipal tax bill.
At last weeks council meeting,
Mayor Chuck Watson said council is working on a 2015 municipal
budget that includes a zero tax increase for a third straight year.
Prior to the regular meeting,
council held a budget workshop
discussing the budget.
In addition to the zero tax increase, council plans to restore
some jobs in various township departments.
Were hoping to hire two police officers this year and two
neighborhood services this year,
Watson said.
The township also plans to hire
a full-time zoning officer for next
year. Currently, it has a part-time
zoning officer available only two
days per week.
Council is also budgeting for
capital improvements for 2015.
Watson said council hasnt pinplease see HARTFORD, page 7

Chester and I were both in college at the time; he attended Rutgers University and I went to
Widener University. I was signed
up for an online dating website
and met a few guys but it didn't
really seem to be going anywhere.
I was getting ready to remove my
profile when I received a message
from Chester, which was the initial contact. Unlike a lot of men I
have met in the past, he was a
genuinely nice person and he
could definitely make me laugh.
On our first date, he gave me a
single red rose.
We got engaged on Oct. 10, 2014.
He proposed at our home in Medford that we own together and
caught me completely off guard.
Boy was I surprised! In November, we celebrated our 10-year an-

Searching the house for gas money

call to the New Jersey Lottery from
your touchtone phone and well take
your order in a prompt fashion. Minutes later, well be at your door with

still give your dreams a chance.
The preceeding was a hypothetical
paid message from the New Jersey Lottery
and state Assembly.

As if we dont have enough forms of

gambling here in New Jersey, our state
Assembly wants to make it even easier
for people to play the lottery. As if the
corner that the corner store sits on
isnt close enough, the Assembly
thinks in another attempt to increase revenue that bringing the lottery to us is a good idea.
Yes, our government needs to investigate alternatives for making money
not just alternatives to supplant the
gambling money our casinos and racetracks are losing.
Its time to start thinking outside
the box. Its time be creative. Its time
to be innovative. Or its time to find
people to represent us who can be.

Regional school taxes could increase for residents

LRHSD board of education approves tentative budget at last weeks meeting
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Medford Township residents could be
paying a little bit more on their regional
school tax bill this year.
The Lenape Regional High School District board of education unanimously approved the district's tentative 2015-16 school
year budget at last week's meeting.
The tentative budget includes an increase of $98.50 for a Medford Township
resident with the average assessed home of
$327,915. The regional school tax rate increased 3.34 cents per $100 of assessed
value.
The total budget is $154,058,531, an increase of 1.4 percent from last year. Most of
the budget is funded with taxpayer money,
with $114,362,944 expected to come from
taxpayers in the district's eight municipalities.
Details on the tentative budget were not

discussed at the meeting. The budget was

passed so it could be submitted to the
Burlington County superintendent's office
prior to March 20.
District officials plan to discuss the
budget in full during the public hearing,
scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 at the
district administration building in Shamong at 7:30 p.m.
In other news:
A pair of late winter snow days on
March 5 and 6 are having an impact on the
school calendar.
Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said
graduation in the district has been shifted
to June 18 because the school calendar has
been extended to make up for the snow
days the district has had this year.
We've had a total of four snow days so
far this year, Birnbohm said.
The snow days are also having an effect
on the board of education's meeting schedule.

The meeting scheduled for June 17 has

been moved back one week to Wednesday,
June 24, to allow the meeting to take place
after the end of the school year.
In what has become a spring tradition, schools in the Lenape District have
begun their fourth annual Give to Goodwill
drive for 2015.
Students, faculty and staff at all four
high schools are encouraged to donate gently-used clothing, accessories, toys, books
and other small household items and place
them into a donation bin located in
each school's parking lot. Since 2012, the
district has collected 109,387 pounds of donations.
Through the drive's first two weeks,
Cherokee High School jumped out to an
early lead, having contributed 0.84 pounds
of donations per student. Cherokee has
won all three of the past Give to Goodwill
drives. The competition runs through
April 17.

HARTFORD

pointed specific projects for capital improvement money yet.
One of the goals for council in
this years budget is to continue
to bring services back to the
township at a reasonable tax rate
for residents.
Its taken us some time, but
were starting to come out of
some of the problems weve had
in the past, Watson said.
Council will continue to discuss the budget at future workshops and meetings. No date has
been set on when the budget will
be introduced.

Environmental Affairs Advisory

Committee update
The Environmental Affairs Advisory Committee updated council on some of its goals for 2015 at
the beginning of the meeting.
Matthew Keane, chairman of
the committee, said his group is
charged with improving open
space needs for residents, maintaining the townships Tree City
USA designation and reviewing
developments and plans to make
sure all environmental requirements are satisfied.
This year, the committee is focusing on a few specific areas.
The first is the new biking trails
at Hartford Crossing, located
near Hartford and Church roads.
Keane said a number of volunteers are continuing to work on
trails in the area. An initial trailhead has already been created.
For 2015, we want to formalize
the park, Keane said. Get the
signs up, get the bridges made
and basically do a grand open-

ing.
Keane is also hoping the township can add more protected open
space in the township.
I found that we had approximately 2,000 acres established
across the township, he said.
However, I was looking at other
areas I would find on our recreational open space report and I
didnt find them.
Keane said the township could
add up to 5,000 acres of additional
open space at zero cost to the
township. He is hoping council
will consider helping the committee protect this additional space.
The committee would also like
to get the township involved with
the states sustainability program. Dan Farino a member of
the committee, said the township
should consider getting certified.
(Some programs) alone in
Medford may already entitle us to
bronze certification, Farino
said. The point to getting certified as opposed to registered is it
entitles the township to grants.
Farino said the grants could
fund programs such as improving
lighting on Main Street.
The committee is also hoping
to educate residents on improving the townships environmental
impacts and proposed a tree bank
requirement for developers to
plant trees to replace trees lost
during any type of development.

District plans to continue to rebuild with more teachers, projects

Probate

609-654-7914

By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The Medford Township Public
School District is continuing to
rebuild and sustain for the future
after its budget cuts of six years
ago with the addition of teachers
and projects in its 2015-2016 budget.
The Board of Education passed
the 2015-2016 tentative budget on
first reading at last weeks meeting. The public hearing and second reading of the budget are
scheduled for April 27.
The budget includes an $82.49
annual increase for the average
assessed home of $327,915.
District business administrator Chad Fires said the budget
has the third-lowest tax impact in

the last eight years. This years

proposed tax increase is smaller
than the $154.10 increase residents had on their local school tax
bill last year. The district received $4.7 million in state funding, the same it received last year.
The district is looking to continue to bring back teaching positions lost in the 2009-10 budget
cuts.
What Im talking about is
maintaining our programs for
the
future,
Superintendent
Joseph J. Del Rossi said.
The budget includes three new
elementary related arts positions.
A band teacher plans to be implemented into the fifth grade, moving a current one to the fourth
grade. The district will also bring
on four new positions in special

education.
Enrollment from 2014-2015 has
decreased from 2,740 to 2,623, losing 117 students and three staff
members.
We need to maintain optimal
class size, Del Rossi said. As enrollment goes down, cost of administration goes up.
One of the larger expenditures
this year is a 10 percent increase
in medical benefits.
Other targeted projects for the
future include improvements to a
field hockey and lacrosse field behind Medford Memorial Middle
School and a greenhouse at Cranberry Pines School.

dle School boys basketball team
was honored for its championship-winning season. It was
given certificates and applauded
by parents for its achievements.
The team managers were also recognized for their dedicated contributions to the team.
The school district released
its HIB numbers for the first half
of the 2014-15 school year. Gale
Ferraro, the districts anti-bullying coordinator, said there were
seven harassment, bullying and
intimidation investigations from
July through December 2014. Two

of the investigations were confirmed incidents.

Ferraro noted that students
have reported occurrences of bullying more often than parents on
account of being increasingly
comfortable doing so.
Its the programs we have in
place already and the fact that we
take our investigations seriously, Ferraro said.
The seven investigations were
all instances of teasing or crude
comments, with no aggressive
physical behavior sighted.
The next Medford Township
School District board of education meeting is scheduled for
April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Medford
Memorial Middle School.
