Year One

March 2015
Important dates:
Year One will be performing their Spring Assembly for Dolphins and
Seahorses parents on Wednesday 25th March and for Turtles and
Sharks parents on Thursday 26th March. Both assemblies will start
at 9:15.

Dear Parents/Carers, the year 1 team thought you may find it helpful to know about what
we are planning to teach this half term and some of our learning objectives with ideas of
how you can help your child at home.
Numeracy

Literacy

In numeracy we will be focussing on a

range of mathematical skills including
counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, finding pairs
to 5,6,7 and 10, doubling numbers and
addition and subtraction
strategies and learning to
tell the time.

In literacy the children will be writing their

own imaginative stories based on stories
they have heard in class. They will be
encouraged to ensure their stories have a
clear beginning, middle and end. The
children will also be
learning and performing
poems and
writing their own
versions. We will be
expecting the children to re-read their
work to check they have included: capital
letters, full stops and interesting words.

Please continue to
encourage your child to use their
mathematical knowledge to solve problems
and if possible to access the internet and
log on to their Abacus online homework.
Science
We will be learning about different plants
and naming them and their parts eg.
stem, leaf, roots, flower. In your own
garden or the park
take time to show your
child any plants which
are starting to grow
and name them. We
will also be comparing
the winter season with the spring and
discussing the changes.

Geography

We will be learning to name the different

countries which make up the United Kingdom and also the names of
the seas surrounding the
UK. It will be helpful if
you could take time to look
at a map of the UK and
talk to your child about
different places you may
have visited.

Design Technology

P.E.

The children will be learning about

different ways to join materials to make a
moving part. They will then use their
knowledge to make their own card with a
moving part. When shopping
you could look at the different
cards and find out if any of
them have moving parts.

Remember your child is taught PE every

week and need to wear their PE kit for
each lesson. Please ensure that their
names are written on their kit/bag.
PE days are
Dolphins- Monday
Sharks - Tuesday
Turtles -Tuesday
Seahorses- Thursday

Cooking
Your child will be cooking throughout the
year in various curriculum areas. If you
have not already done so, we would like
to ask you to make a voluntary
contribution of 1 towards the cost of
purchasing resources. Please
give the donation to your
childs class teacher.

It would also be helpful if you:

Make time to share a book with your

child every day.

Help your child to learn her/his key

words by playing games such as,
pairs, snap, looking for the words in
books, displaying them around your
home etc.

We will also be teaching aspects of Computing, Music, RE and PSHE as the term
progresses. Our planning is linked across the curriculum and most subjects will be taught
alongside each other.
Watch out for fundraising events later this term. These will be held in order to
raise money for trips this year.

We hope some of these ideas will be helpful to you. If you have any questions, queries or
concerns we are always willing to talk them through with you. If we are unable to answer
your question immediately, we are always willing to make an appointment for a more
suitable time.
On behalf of the Year 1 team, thank you for your support
Ms Murphy (Year Group Leader)
