BACKGROUNDER
The chapter showed to the reader what had happened to Basilio when he went missing

after escaping the sacristan-mayor who is furiously mad at him and his younger brother, Crispin,
after being accused of stealing money. It was revealed that he is apparently alive, wounded and
being taken care of by a family living in a nipa hut in the woods. When Basilio knew that he was
staying already in that house for two months, he decided to go to the town, which is San Diego to
find his Mother Sisa, and his sister Crispin. It was Christmas eve in San Diego, yet the town and
the people were gloomy unlike the past few years wherin there were chrismas lanterns present in
houses in San Diego. In that night also in the house of Kapitan Basilio, Don Filipo was also
there. While they were talking , Sisa approached the house of Kapitan Basilio. Don Filipo
wondered why is that Sisa was wondering arround knowing that Sisa was in the custody of a
doctor. Kapitan Basilio told him that the doctor who kept Sisa set her free because the doctor
was afraid that when the officials especialaly the friars knew it he might be accused of conspiring
with Ibarra. They talked also about on what happened to Padre Salvi after the death of the
sacristan-mayor, also about the death of Pilosopo Tasyo, and on what happened to Marial Clara
and his father Kapitan Tiago.
When Basilio arrived in San Diego, he found their house abandoned and in ruins and
found also that his mother was mentaly challenged. While searching for his mother, he heard a
woman singing and found out that it was his mother singing in front of the house of sacristanmayor. Instead of going directly to approach his mother, he decided to just watch over her
because he knew the danger of getting caught because he was accused of robbing the convent.
He continued to follow his mother and found themselves in the forest owned by the family of
Ibarra and Sisa locked herself up in a cementery but Basilio managed to breakin through
climbing up a tree and when they met he hugged her mother tightly and this made Sisa to gain
her consciousness and recognized the boy as her son. A few moments later after shouting loudly,
Sisa passed out and died. When Basilio gained counsioucess he noticed that his mother was
already dead and this made him squeal. While he was crying, a man approached him, walking
slowly, and asked him if he is the child of woman Basilio was carrying. Then Elias which is the
man who approached Basilio, asked Basilio to get some firewood and burn their remains

together with his mother. He asked also the kid to dig the soil below them to get the some hidden
gold if ever that no one will come before dawn and use these to study. When Basilio lef
