2000-04 ENGINE COOLING

Electric Cooling Fans - S40 & V40

APPLICATION
2004 S40
The S40 information in this article applies up to early production 2004 cars. In mid-2004, Volvo introduced
a redesigned S40. For early production cars, the 4th character of the VIN is V. For late production cars, the
4th character of the VIN is M. Early production S40 models are equipped with 1.9L, 4-cylinder engines.
Late production S40 models are equipped with 5-cylinder engines.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

ELECTRIC COOLING FAN
The engine has a large cooling system with an electronically controlled engine cooling fan. The fan draws
air through the radiator from behind the radiator. The engine cooling fan operates in two stages depending
on Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) signal to ECM. The fan is controlled electronically via two fan
relays from the ECM.
The vehicle is also equipped with a condenser fan. This fan is actuated by the A/C condenser fan relay via
the ECM. The A/C pressure sensor (linear) provides information using a linear signal about any pressure
changes on the high-pressure side. Depending on the pressure the ECM can activate the A/C condenser fan
relay.

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
ELECTRIC COOLING FAN
The electric cooling fan and A/C condenser fan relays are controlled by the ECM. Relays will set a DTC.
Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) and A/C pressure sensor are also monitored by the ECM and
will set DTCs.
For more information on the self-diagnostic system, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC article in
ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

COMPONENT TESTS
A/C PRESSURE SENSOR
This is a 3-wire sensor. Pin No. 1 is signal ground to ECM pin No. 77. Pin No. 3 is 5 volt reference from
ECM pin No. 74. Pin No. 2 is A/C pressure signal to ECM pin No. 14. This signal should be about 0.9 V
with the A/C off. With A/C on, the signal to the ECM is about 1.4-1.8 V.
CONDENSER FAN & ENGINE COOLING FAN LOW SPEED RELAYS
Resistance between relay terminals No. 1 and No. 2 should be about 75-105 ohms at 68F (20C). If not,
replace relay. See Fig. 7 .

ENGINE COOLING FAN HIGH SPEED RELAY
Resistance between relay terminals No. 1 and No. 2 should be about 75 ohms at 68F (20C). If not, replace
relay. See Fig. 8 .

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

COOLING FAN
Removal & Installation

1. Remove the front engine bay cover. Mark the EVAP hose and remove it from the canister purge
valve. See Fig. 9 . Unplug the connector from the intake air temperature sensor on the charge air
cooler (undo wiring from the shroud). Unplug the connector from the right side fan. Remove the two
bolts at the top from the unit. Raise the car.
