Dear Toastmasters of District 87 and beyond,

We are counting the days before we have the pleasure of welcoming you to beautiful Kuching,
Sarawak for the Districts Annual Conference on 15-17 May 2015. You have seen our tagline,
Conference with a Difference. Truly, we endeavor to make this conference an experience to
remember for years to come.
A Reunion and Celebration
For starters, it will be a reunion with toastmasters of various districts that were once under one
giant umbrella of the original District 51 that covered Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia,
Brunei, Hong Kong and Macau. That was the time when we held sway in the world of
Toastmasters having secured the Presidents Distinguished District consecutively for 8 terms
from 1996-1997 onwards (then limited to only top four Districts in the world).
Due to its extensive growth, District 51 was reformed to give birth to District 51 (West
Malaysia), District 80 (Singapore), District 87 (East Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei) and
District 89 (South & West China, Hong Kong and Macau). Last term (2013-2014), ALL these
Districts once again recaptured our glory days as each one achieved the Presidents
Distinguished District.
Therefore, let us take this opportunity to come together to rekindle old friendships and to
commemorate our collective success through the historic achievement of the four districts.
The Open Space sessions
Communication is a two-way channel. Therefore, we will be unveiling the first Unconference
Conference where the participants have the chance to give their input on the topics to be
discussed. This time, you, the delegates will have your say.
This time, your voice will be heard. Come and meet others who share your concerns. Pitch your
ideas and thoughts together! Thrash it out! Explore endless possibilities through creative
dialogues. The best part is anyone can contribute something of value.
Enlightening Speakers
We are proud to present some of the most noteworthy personalities within Toastmasters
International and beyond.
Shurooq AlBanna, the first Arab woman to enter the finals of the World Championship of
Public Speaking (nine months after joining Toastmasters!) where she was placed third.
