Subject: European Regulator Test Specifications

This service bulletin has been compiled to assist in the identification and testing of a large range
of European regulators fitted to Bosch Alternators.
The attached spreadsheet covers the familiar 1197 311 xxx and the newer F005 145 XXX part
numbers.
The Diagram column relates to the physical appearance of the regulator and its connector
location. The connection diagram refers to the physical electrical connections.
Terminal terminology (refer to table below)
W = Phase output
L = Lamp Input
15 = Ignition positive
S = Battery Sense Input
DFM = Dynamo Field Monitoring
COM = Communications Port
D+ = Excitation input
KL15 + Ignition positive
M = Same as DFM
N = Neutral or Star point
61E = Same as L
IG = Ignition Positive
DF = Field
Caution : DFM connections are used to monitor the field function. When bench testing the
alternator do not connect any supply or earth to this connection, damage to the regulator
may result. 10 Ma Max current capability.
The DFM terminal is used to monitor the alternator current load factor, it is used by the engine
management system to increase engine idle speed, reduce load by deactivating non essential
loads.
Regulators with a COM connection cannot be bench tested as the communications port must be
connected to the vehicle engine management system so that the correct protocol and instructions
can be sent and received by the regulator.
Some regulators with an L terminal have inbuilt load and start response. When bench testing
units within the F00M 145 series a slow start response may be observed, this is normal for some
units. Slow response to rapid load changes may also be observed. (load dump protection).
The warning lamp via the L terminal can communicate system faults such as Broken belt, open
excitation circuit, shorted or grounded rotor. The L terminal can drive a relay to switch on
consumer loads once the engine is running. ( see circuit diagram Terminal L.

It is important that the original regulator specified in the Alternator parts listing within ESItronic is
strictly adhered to, as these new regulators incorporate some or all of the aforementioned
features.
