Construction is scheduled to begin right away on Lakeside Blvd after council awarded the contract to Gold Star
Trucking Ltd on March 18.
This year in 2015 we also added to the Lakeside Blvd
reconstruction, a 4th Ave. reconstruction, and a 2nd St.
overlay program. The projects will consist of replacement of approximately 1,300 metres of water mains, hydrants and valves, replacement of sanitary sewer on 4th
Avenue and Lakeside as well, installation of 250 metres
of new storm line, said Bryce Mackan, project coordinator for the Town of Strathmore, spoke on behalf of the
engineering department.
Theres also some concrete, curb and gutter, sidewalks to be repaired and or replaced in the project and
miscellaneous items that come up during construction
as they always do.
The tender is specified in two stages. The Lakeside
Blvd work is to start as soon as possible after awarded
and to be completed by July 13 in hopes that it will be
done before Strathmore 2015 Alberta 55 Plus Summer
Games and the Strathmore Stampede.
The work on 4th Ave. and 2nd St. is to begin after Aug.
3 and be completed by Sept. 30.
There were 11 bids received which were reviewed by
Associated Engineering, who then returned a letter of
recommendation.
In Associateds letter they recommend that if the town
awards to Gold Star that we consider an increase to field
presence to monitor and inspect the field activities more
often than previously scheduled, said Mackan.
Councillor Pat Fule questioned why it was mentioned
to monitor and inspect more often.
Associated told us they (Gold Star) are new to them,
new to Associated, and that the background checks on
the personnel provided were adequate. So because of
the lack of experience shown by the underground contractor, and the difference in site occupancy days and
crew size, that is why they are recommending extra
(monitoring), said Mackan.
The second lowest tender came in from North Star
Contracting, who did the work on Thomas Drive, and
the service road in front of Dairy Queen. Their bid was
over $3.7 million.
Mackan did state that Thomas Drive met with some
underground water conditions at the time of construction and that could be cause for some of the problems.
Without the top lift the water was left to soak into the
base lift. The contractor is to come in and repair any
base work damage and then put on the top lift, which
prevents the water from going down into that basin.
The reconstruction of Lakeside Blvd was first presented to council in May of 2014. At that time the four tenders ranged from $2,615,660.75 to $3,054,709.92.

For some young Wheatland 4-H club
members, the public speaking regionals at the Strathmore Civic Centre on
March 21 showcased their speaking
and presentation skills, while the crowd
showed their appreciation for their efforts.
They presented in front of friends
and family, as well as judges, who were
quite impressed with what they saw.
I chose Five Years because I just
thought it was important that everybody makes the most of their lives with
living it to the fullest and being the best
they could be, said Morgan Hale from
Hussar 4-H.
Her favourite part about public
speaking is that she likes to talk and
felt as though it was a seamless transition into the competition.

I love to talk so it all came natural
to me, said Hale. I felt confident because I have been in 4-H for along time,
been to regionals twice and made it to
districts every year for my speech. Ive
had the experience and felt really prepared.
For junior public speaker Megan McCreadie, her speech Cornzapoppin resembled just how good a bowl of popcorn she has had.
I was really confident but really nervous too. I chose popcorn because my
pop inspired me because he makes
the best popcorn and its a really fun
topic, said McCreadie, a member of the
Arrowwood River Wranglers and from
Wheatland.
She felt very prepared with her
speech but felt as though her impromptu could have been done better.
I like talking to people and Im a
very confident person, said McCreadie.
If youre in 4-H you have to do public
speaking.
The most impressive junior presentation of the day came from local Abby
van Egmond, who showed off her
amazing water colour skills and gave
the judges a lot to think about.
I went out to Wal-Mart and really
wanted to paint and the cheapest paint
that my mom would let me buy was
water colours, said van Egmond. I
went on YouTube and the lily, I found
was really interesting
The water Asiatic Lily was what she
went with in her presentation, because
it was her favourite one to create and
display.
Warmer weather brings increased fire risk

The unusually warm temperatures
and the high winds of late have had Fire
and Emergency Manager for Wheatland
County Judy Unsworth, and county fire
chiefs keeping an eye out for fires.
Earlier this month, on March 6, fire
permits were suspended and on March
13 a fire ban for the county was put
into place.
The ban was lifted on March 16 due
to snow over that weekend, and has
not come back in effect yet.
Last year was a wet year, allowing for
all of the grasses to grow well, and now
it has been a dry winter, without a lot
of snow or rain. With the grass drying
and any snow on the ground melted,
the strong winds with high temperatures have cured the grass.
Then we have a really high fire risk
because were not in any growth stage,
so we (hadnt) had enough moisture,
said Unsworth.
Your highest fire risk times are actually not in the middle of summer, you
can have absolute fires in the middle of
summer. Its in the spring and the fall
when we havent had any greening up
yet, you get lots of drying.
In the fall when weve taken the
crops off and everything is dry and
nothing is green any more, so those are
your two risks, spring and fall.
Environment and Sustainable Resources Development (ESRD) sends reports at the start of fire season, which
is March 1. They then sent out a report
warning different municipalities that
the conditions were building up to be
perfect for fires.
In the county there were some grass
fires that were started, and led to the
ban being in place.
They were started by something
else, but the fact we were able to sustain it enough to have a grass fire was
an indicator to us that we needed to
put on the fire ban, said Unsworth.
With warmer weather predicted its
possible a ban could be put back into

place for the county. Advisories can be
found at either www.wheatlandcounty.
ca, or at Albertafirebans.ca, which is
run by ESRD and will post all bans
across the province.

Q: What happens if I dont have a will?

A: When a person dies without a will, it is referred
to as intestate. The family is often uncertain as

to who is in control of the estate and the funeral
arrangements. If the deceased has a surviving
spouse, that person becomes the legal next-ofkin. Without a spouse, the chain continues to
the oldest adult child, then the parents, then
oldest adult grandchild, and further down the
line to nieces and nephews. If the proper next
of kin should decline their duties, it is passed
on to the next person in line. The next of kin
then needs to file a request with the courts to be
named the administrator before they are granted
access to the estate. However, when there is
no legal will, the administrator of the estate is
obligated to follow legislation regarding the

Carseland silent auction

assists community building

Carseland held a silent auction fundraiser and dinner on March 21 at the
local hall, to help raise funds for maintenance for community buildings.
The Community Association and Agricultural Society are responsible for
maintaining all the facilities in town.
We have the community hall, the recreational centre, curling rink, the four millennium ballpark plus other parks, said
Rita Kruger, President of the Carseland
Community and District Agricultural Society.
The fundraiser we did tonight helps
us with operating costs and to move forward with new projects and to continue to improve the facilities we already
have.
The fundraiser seemed to go over

well with everyone in attendance.

I heard the food was really good and
everybody seemed to be happy with the
meal. (We had) a lot of auction items,
which was great. We are so thankful and
blessed to have lots of interesting items
the cake (sold for $600) seemed like
a big hit, said Kruger. Its kind of like
our spring gathering after lots of them
went south for the winter, so everybody
comes back, its nice to see everybody.
There were a lot of different organizations involved in the planning of the
event.
Our group works in conjunction with
the Lions Club, who are integral in making the auction happen. We take care of
the food and decorating, said Kruger.
Bev Ross, who is our general manager for the Ag Society, is phenomenal.
Shes created her own computer program that runs this thing.

Strathmore RCMP are currently

investigating a hit and run collision
that occurred on Thomas Drive. At
approximately 1:15 a.m. on March
22nd a silver or white Chevrolet
Silverado truck struck a vehicle
parked in front of its residence.
The Silverado is believed to be a
2008-2013 model and should have
substantial front end damage
including a missing head light. If
you have any information that could
help assist in this investigation or
locate a vehicle matching the above
description please contact the

A recent study compared those jet-air dryers in
public bathrooms with the standard paper towels.
The study concluded that the air dryers spread

The musical
is about Lawrence,
who
has the great
life on a Riviera. While he
swindles
ladies, a streetguy
named
Freddy comes
into his life
and
causes
havoc.
Basically there is one
very suave conman named
Lawrence and his compatriot Andre who you find out
very early on that theyre conartists and find somewhere
in the Riviera finding all
these wealthy women. They
run into a less-suave, a lesspolished conman who they
end up getting into conflicts
with, said director Angela
Reeves. They become adversaries throughout the show
and there are other characters
that come into play.
Reeves and her cast brainstormed ideas for musicals
and this one seemed to work
the best.
We had a meeting and
talked about different musicals that wed like to do, said
Reeves. Weve done musicals
in the past, but its been quite
a few years since weve done
one with this theatre group.
She read the script and instantly was hooked on the
type of music and plots it
provided.
The music I absolutely
love, its very jazzy, somewhat
Latin, like its just really good
music as well its a really
good plot, said Reeves.
Marvin Gill, who will be
starring as Lawrence, could
not have been more excited

to take on the main role.
Hes had a very smooth
sailing for the last 10 years,
things have gone really
smoothly. Hes made a lot
money by swindling ladies
and had a very good life on
the Riviera and thats when
Freddy came into his life and
all hell breaks loose and a
lot of antics
takes place,
said Gill of
his character. Theyre
trying to out
duel each
other to get
the $50,000
from
this
lady
and
I just get
to take advantage of
Freddy all
over
the
place.
Gill admits that the most
unique thing about his role is
the accents.
I have a German, English
and at the end I have to have
a Spanish accent, all part of
my conning characters that
I have developed, said Gill.
The accents are crucial to
make the role believable.
Courtney Nelson, who will
play Freddy Benson, feels
very fortunate to be in a main
role in his first musical.
I love it, its my first musical since I was a kid, said
Nelson. Ive been fortunate
enough to have lead roles
in the past but its kind of
branching out into unchartered territory for me, its exciting but nerve-wracking at
the same time.
He describes himself as the
rotten of the dirty rotten, as
he makes a living as a bottom
feeder and preys on his victims.
He definitely excelled in
his life at it, so my role is to
be the underdog and try to be
on top for once, said Nelson
on his character.
Tickets go on sale at the beginning of April and will be
$20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students.
Strathmore hosts
summer games playoffs

Strathmore will be the host of 11 different 55 Plus Summer Games playoffs
and qualifying events starting April 18.
It is unusual but because were hosting the provincial senior games, the
zone committee decided they would
give us as much practice with our volunteers and people that are organizing
the events to run zones before they run
the provincials, said Joss Binns, activities director for the Summer Games.
A lot of the volunteers may not have
seen some of the events coming to
Strathmore before, and this will give
them a good idea of what to expect.
There are only six playoff events that
wont be held in Strathmore, due to a
lack of equipment at this time, and also
because Calgary offered to host cycling
and athletics with Strathmore, because
there are so few entries in those categories that it makes sense to do a meet
with everybody.
Anyone 55 and older can sign up
for the playoff events. You do need to
compete in playoffs to continue on to
provincials, which are being held in
Strathmore this July 16-19.
A lot of them (the events) are not
really that competitive at all, like the
card games are the first three coming
up, whist and bridge and crib which
a lot of people play for fun, hopefully
well see some local people come out,
even if they dont want to go to the
games maybe theyll come out and play
a particular card game for half a day,
said Binns.
People can enter up to a week before the playoff date.
He said even if people dont know
how to play there will be sessions on
some of the activities so that people
can learn.
The first three events coming to
Strathmore will all be held at the Happy Gang in the Lambert Centre: Bridge
on April 18 at 9 a.m. - the contact is

Dr. Ward Fanning was recently named the inaugural recipient of the Dr. Hal Irvine Community
Focus Award. Irvine spent 33 years working in
rural family medicine, delivering to his patients
the kind of service that he himself would want to
receive.
The award was named after Hal because Hal
Irvine epitomizes everything we believe in for rural doctors. Hes focused on the community; hes
there if you need him, sometimes just knowing
hes there to assist was the best thing. It would
allow you to still carry on what you needed to
do but you knew you had someone in the background to help you out, said Doug Myhre, the
University of Calgary dean of distributed learning
and rural initiatives.
He was dedicated to the community, focused
on the community and those are attributes that we
want to continue to acknowledge and reinforce.
Irvine had semi-retired in 2013 and was in Vancouver to receive an award for his hard work and
dedication when things suddenly changed.
Hal was awarded the Family Physician of the
Year for Alberta. We were in Vancouver for him
to receive the award and he never made it. He
had seizures on the Sunday night and the awards
banquet was for the Tuesday night, said Dianne
Irvine, Hals wife.
He was diagnosed with an inoperable and malignant brain tumour. Hal is still in supportive care,
in treatment and is doing quite well. He looks and
feels well but has lost most of his mobility and
a lot of speech and comprehension because of
where the tumour is in his brain.
Rural medicine has always meant a lot to Hal,
who also practiced anesthesia, and he became involved in starting an organization for Rural GP
Anesthetists.
He first began studying medicine when a good
friend suggested it, but it wasnt until he was in
his residency when he knew this was what he
wanted to do with his life.
Hal has been the recipient of numerous awards,
but this is the first to have been created in his
name.
We were both pretty teary, he felt extremely
honoured, and when he heard that Ward had won

it, he said oh, well the award should have been in
Wards name, said Dianne.
Fanning has been working in Strathmore for 30
years. He remembers finishing his residency on a
Friday and beginning at the Strathmore Hospital
the next day. The first person he saw in emergency that Saturday morning is still a patient of
his 30 years later.
The continuity of care really makes the practice of medicine rich, said Fanning.
Strathmore is just such a terrific place to work,
great patients, great staff, great physicians to work
with.
Communities wrote in to nominate physicians,
and the Rural Initiatives Committee met and gave
input on who should receive it.
It was pretty amazing the amount of support
he (Fanning) got from all the different letters that
came in, said Myhre.
We feel hes done so much for the community
of Strathmore, hes been here for the colleagues,
hes been here for the hospital and certainly hes
done a lot of teaching towards students and residents who have then returned to Strathmore, and
then of course most importantly he has been here
for the patients and families of Strathmore for 30
years, said Dr. Ben Sader, who works with Fanning.
Dr. Alison Clarke, who also currently works
with Fanning, was a resident with him as well.
I just found him so inspiring in terms of his
love of the medicine as well as the community of
a small town and how he just kind of knows his
patients so well, has a story to tell of everybody
that he sees and he just made family medicine
exciting, said Clarke.
I came out here to work in a rural setting
where you really have the full scope of medicine
is so rewarding and to have a mentor like him
who is there for you every step along the way, you
can ask him any question, hes very supportive,
its been great.
Each year the Dr. Hal Irvine Community Focus
Award will be presented in honour of physician
preceptors who have practiced for a minimum of
five years and who demonstrate the qualities that
Irvine showed throughout the life of his practice.
Nomination deadline is Dec. 31 of each year.
Happily Never After

Each year Grade 5 and 6 students at Westmount
Elementary School rehearse for their spring play,
usually written by associate principal Dana Graff.
This year Aric Wutzke wrote and is directing the
play titled Happily Never After.
I used to do it all, well most of it, what weve
done is split it up now, So Aric is doing the directing and he wrote the script and Im doing a lot of
the set, all the tech end, said Graff.
The theme is about some girls who learn how
exciting books can be and reading.
The two main characters Sam and Leslie get lost
in the world of fiction, and fall in love with reading.
Reading isnt bad at all to be honest that
stories were actually better than the movies, said
Sam, played by Emily Cooke.
I never thought I would ever have such an

adventure just by opening a book, said Leslie,
played by Kaia Gron.
I guess thats the moral of the story, is reading is a fun and exciting adventure, its not boring
and that people need to give reading a try, said
Wutzke.
I based this whole book on old fairytales that
we have kind of lost touch with because were
in a world of media and weve kind of lost the real
stories, so this goes back to the real stories and
how the real stories are actually really good.
He wonders how many kids nowadays have
read Cinderella, or Alice in Wonderland, classic
childrens tales.
Being involved with drama at the school means
a lot to Wutzke. Since coming to Westmount three
years ago he has helped Graff with the yearly production, increasing in his role each time.
If you had asked me what connecting with the
students was, it was being part of these extra circular activities and I have found through these years I really have a
connection with these kids, kids that arent necessarily in my
class, said Wutzke.
We become even more of a school community not just
classroom and I know I have some girls that have wanted
to come back from previous years and help out just because
they love it.
These are the memories that the kids are going to take
away from the school, said Wutzke.
The play will run for five shows, two in the evening and
three matinees.
During the Wednesday, April 1 matinee seniors in the community are invited to attend the show for free. The Grade 6
students will serve tea and treats.
Matinees will be held March 30, 31 and April 1 at 1:30 p.m.
The evening performances are March 31 and April 1 at 7 p.m.
Tickets for children four and under are free, ages 5-12 are $3
and adults are $5.

Fule for Thought
Its elementary school report card time at my
house, and that means youve been marking for
weeks (after of course youve made sure every one
of your assignments has met various learning objectives and thats definitely an easy thing to do!)
So, Ive been hiding out in my man cave downstairs, basically thanking my lucky stars that I teach
high school!
Elementary teachers have to work so hard! Little kids cant give a teacher much down time
they always need help, and many have such special
needs. In high school, you can generate a test that
can keep the students busy for close to an hour.
This cannot happen with a class of 25 little ones
there is no down time! I really respect elementary
teachers you are the ones who are really in the
trenches!
So on Sunday, I thought Id help Deb with the
vacuuming. At least, I turned on Jarvis, our robot
vacuum! It was a really successful afternoon, he really picked up a lot of stuff I was exhausted just
watching (I may never vacuum again; do you know
how good that feels?)!
The best part is watching how Jarvis moves
around, touching objects and mapping out the
rooms. Our old dog, Brodie was in a deep sleep. It
was so deep, and hes stone deaf, that Jarvis vacuumed up to Brodie, tapped him regularly, and basically vacuumed around him! He mapped and vacuumed around our sleeping dog! Then, after about
an hour and a half of Jarviss chore, I actually had
to work, and dump out his tray. Whew, a tough
afternoon!
I started to think how different husbands and
wives are, and how best I could help new couples.
This time, I thought Id translate a few things for
new wives, so that youd understand your husbands more, and maybe, just maybe cut them
some slack!
So, here are some things you new brides and
fiancs should know about your men:
1. Husbands are really polite. When we ask about
your day, thats being polite. We dont necessarily
want to actually hear about the whole days details,
a simple and polite good or not so good, is all
were after. Remember, when you talk to your guy,
less is more!
2. If you tell us your problems and concerns, we
think you told us that, to get help and advice. Why
else would you spend half an hour telling us about

a stressful day, if you dont want help?
3. We dont really believe you when you say you
have nothing to wear, because weve seen your
closet! All our clothes have been relegated to two
drawers in a dresser, and its not even in our own
bedroom!
4. When you say its okay to go out with the
boys, we dont know you have your own set time
limit for us, and that the timer started with us ending the call!
5. Husbands will drink from the milk jug or juice
container, if no ones around. Why would we dirty
another glass you should thank us!
6. If we dont have a Jarvis, were probably not
going to move furniture when we vacuum.
7. Please dont ask us to phone our guy friends
just to talk. We dont do that! When we phone a
pal, theres got to be a reason for it, or else we feel
weird.
8. If we get sick or hurt, our guy friends will
mock us. We may not say this to you, but we really
want to be nursed back to health, and doted on.
9. If you give us a grocery list, and we get everything but one item, we really dont care that
much that we missed that one thing. I mean, hey,
we got 99.5 per cent of the huge list. Wouldnt you
be happy if your surgeon had a 99.5% success rate
in his operations? We missed parsley big woop!
10. We really dont feel like circling the parking
lot to find that one spot that is magic for you!
In fact, we couldve been parked and in the mall,
by the time we find the missing link of parking
spots!
11. There is nothing worse to us than clothes
shopping with you, unless its for shoes!
12. Were not big fans of crying babies. If our kid
is crying on a long car ride, its probably going to
get a lot of bottles passed back to it! Heck, well
even change the heavy, wet diaper, if it means the
ride was quiet!
So, thats Part 1 of Husbands and Their Feelings. As we get closer to Fathers Day, Ill try to
bring you Part 2. And guys, youre welcome. Im
there for you!

On his mothers side, Arts grandfather was born in Hofensdalh, Russia and his grandmother was born in Ashley, N.D.
His father, Felix Taubert, was born in Kletzshen, Germany
and immigrated to Hussar around 1925, where he married
Katie Kaiser, and started farming.

While there are more points for
each of these statements I found in
amusing that there might be people
in our country who somehow
assumed they accidentally as it
were, became Canadian citizens.
There is a process to work through.
Most of us understand that.
In the Bible, in Philippians 3: 20,
the Apostle Paul writes: Our
citizenship is in heaven. Earlier in
the chapter he makes it clear he is
talking about those who worship
by the Spirit of God, who glory in
Christ Jesus, and who put no

moved to Rosebud in July 1947, he attended Rosebud School through age 16, before joining the
work force as a farm labourer. When he was eight
or nine years old, he was already driving a tractor
and working in the field. By the time he was 11,
he worked through harvest with Albert Schaffer,
hauling grain from the combine. In 1958/59, he
worked for Dick Cosgrave of chuckwagon fame,
and got to spend a lot of time working at the Calgary Stampede. In the spring of 1953, he started
working for his grandfather; then in November on
his 20th birthday he signed a farm lease contract,
witnessed by Ray Schooling and Mr. Bell, and
started farming. In 1965, Art purchased the Crory
farm from Jim Mclean, but didnt
move in until they had built a
new house, where he and Dianne
still live, ten miles north and west
of Hussar.
His grandpa was a very patient
and good teacher and mentor, as
they would discuss things before
proceeding and doing what Art
wanted to do. Sometimes Arts
way was right, and other times it
wasnt. Then Grandpa would say see, now you
know. Art still thinks that experience is the best
teacher.
Diannes great-great-grandparents on her fathers side, moved from Scotland to Lanark County, Ont. in the early 1800s. Her grandfather was
born there in 1867. He married Margaret Miller
in 1891. Diannes father William Watt was born in
Staffa, Ont. in 1899. The family moved to Rossington, Alta. in 1914, and Diannes parents moved to
Rosebud in 1932.
Diannes mother Gladys Alberta Edgar was born
in Edmonton in 1905, to parents Thomas and Margaret Edgar, the same year Alberta became a province. They had moved to Alberta from Ontario in
1903.
Dianne was born at Drumheller, the closest hospital to Rosebud, on Feb. 29, 1940, which means
she only has a birthday every four years. In 2012,
she celebrated her true 18th Leap Year Birthday!
Dianne, who is also left-handed, went to school
in Rosebud and Standard through Grade 12,
followed by Business College in Calgary, then
worked in the offices at Alberta Distillery, then as
a secretary to the Plant Personnel Manager at AGT
in Calgary.
Art had moved to Rosebud when he was 14, and
attended school there for another couple of years,

which is where he met Dianne. After leaving
school, he worked with several local farmers including Diannes brother Jim Watt. Art and Dianne
were married on Oct. 28, 1961. Their wedding
dance was held in Rosebud, with Linton Treacy
and his orchestra providing the music. Linton also
played at their 50th Wedding Anniversary party
held in Hussar. They have four children Kristen, Kim, Kevin and Koren and now have eight
grandchildren.
Their family and friends soon discovered that
the Taubert farm was a great place to get rid of animals they couldnt keep, which is how they inherited most of their cats, dogs, horses and chickens!
Art and Dianne are now retired
grain farmers, living on the south
slope of the Wintering Hills.
Reflecting on the past wonderful 54 years in the Hussar
area, surrounded by family and
friends, they remember their involvement with many organizations like Cubs and Brownies,
4-H clubs, hockey and figure
skating, curling, Credit Union
Board, Seed Plant Board, the Sundowners Seniors
Club and the Historical Society. Dianne played a
big part in the creation of the latest Hussar Heritage Book, and is already working on the next
one.
Dianne remembers that the Booster Club started
the very first Summer Daze in 1974, and almost
every year since, Art has cooked the pancakes
on the Breakfast Wagon. He has only missed two
years, once because he was in the hospital, and
once they were away travelling.
He has cooked pancakes for many, many breakfasts, suppers, and holiday crews. She figures the
number of pancakes cooked must be in the millions! Dianne was a partner in the Something
Special store in Hussar with Kay Fraser, Karen
Treacy, Lorraine Conley and Lois Thompson.
Changes they have seen in the area include installation of the windmills, the elevators are gone,
the bigger farms and loss of small family farms,
and fewer people now live in the area.
They have all enjoyed their life on the farm, and
enjoyed being a part of such a busy, caring community. There can be no better place to raise a
family, knowing that there are friends and neighbours to help, whenever the need might arise, and
whatever it might be.

Dancers from the Ulmer School of Irish Dancing performed for residents of the Sagewood Seniors
Community in Strathmore on St Patricks Day, March 17. The school, which is located in Okotoks and
Langdon, has three troops of dancers who perform in small communities throughout southern Alberta.
The troop at Sagewood was made up of 5-13 year old dancers with six months to over six years of
Irish Dance experience.

Every chance they get, staff at the
Strathmore Municipal Library organize
different, almost always free, events for
the community. This spring break is no
different with the creation of a unique
new contest, and the return of a popular program.
Tee Time Tuesday will be held on
April 7, from 1-4p.m., which will see
the return of mini golf at the library.
The families absolutely loved coming to the library to play mini golf. Rachel our director is quite creative when
it comes to creating different challenges and different holes. The mini golf
will be spread throughout the lobby,
the library and the meeting room, said
Assistant Director of Library Services
Carmen Erison.
There will also be board games set
up for anyone that doesnt want to golf.
Last year there were 42 kids that took
part in the golf game, and 100 overall
that were in the library for games that
day.
On Wednesday, April 8 the library
will be hosting its first Edible Book
Day contest. The idea is based on an international event that has been around
since the 90s and is usually held at the
beginning of April.
Were quite excited about this. We
have been wanting to do this project
for some time, its just been working
out the logistics of it, said Erison.
It allows amateur bakers, anybody,
to be able to create edible creations

based on books, or your favourite
poem or a cover of a book that you
like. We have seen so many types of
edible book creations just by simply
going onto Pinterest.
The rules are simple and can be
found at strathmorelibrary.ca/ediblebooks- it must be edible, and have
something to do with books or reading. Ideas can come from anywhere;
youre favourite book, poem, manga, a
famous author or even a scroll.
The great thing is you can go onto
the internet and theres so many great
ideas out there, said Erison.
The contest is open to all ages in two
categories, 13-years-old and under, and
14 plus. From 12- 1 p.m. the books will
be accepted, and from 1-2:30 p.m. they
will be on public display, there will be
a public viewing of them all and thats
when they will also be judged by the
public.
After the votes are counted and the
results are in, prizes will be awarded.
Then all viewers and participants will
be able to snack on the entries.
Thursday, April 9 there will be a karaoke and dance party from Sports
1-4 p.m.
Kids will be able to sing, dance and
have fun.
(Its) just another fun program for
kids to just get them out of the house
and into the library to enjoy some good
old fashioned fun, said Erison.

Chase Andersen was exactly 11 months old when he was
diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The fatal lung disease affects all of the bodys organs, mainly targeting the lungs and
digestive tract.
Its like drowning from the inside out because the thickness of the mucus in his lungs, he cant move it very well and
he continually has a cough even though he doesnt have a
cold, said Brandy Andersen, Chases mom.
Just before New Years Chase, who is now eight and a half
years old, was admitted to the Alberta Childrens Hospital
(ACH) for two weeks. Brandy is a single mom who works as
a school bus driver. During the first week Chase was admitted school was out, and during the second week when school
was back in she had to leave the Childrens Hospital at four in
the morning, come into Strathmore, do her school run, which
goes out to Hussar, get everything done that she needed and
head back to the hospital again.
It was tiring, said Andersen. Thats when there were bad
snow storms and her van was already acting up, and she had
kept her fingers crossed every day that she would make it to
her destination.
After putting a newer motor in the van she was still having
issues. Andersens friend Joey Kauenhofen said enough was
enough; she created a GoFundMe page to help the mom raise
enough money for a new vehicle.
The reason I set up the fundraiser for Brandy and Chase
is because she is a very giving, generous person who has it

rough, said Kauenhofen.
Her son has CF and they spend a lot of time at ACH, she
also spends a lot of time worrying about him I wanted her
to have one less thing to worry about.
Her van has broken down so many times, she keeps putting money into it because she (had) no other option, so I
thought if we could get it running reliably or get her into
something else she doesnt have to worry.
Since the GoFundMe page was created Andersens ex has
helped her finance a 2012 Ford Fiesta.
This town is amazing for helping, I dont even know what
the fund is (at) but anything that goes is going towards payments on the car, said Andersen.
Chase is even super excited about the car, he had tears in
his eyes. When wed be driving the van, every time it would
make a stutter he was like please dont let it break down now
van he would kind of rub it. Pretty bad for my eight-year-old
to be telling my van not to break down.
Besides helping with costs of the car, Andersen said any additional money raised through the GoFundMe page will help
with her costs of going to the hospital. It can be pricey to go
to ACH, you have to pay for parking, plus food and the cost
of gas to commute back and forth for work and when Chase
is admitted its just under $100 for parking
It just becomes a lot in general and I try and give him the
best possible that I possibly can for his life, I try and do many
things that I can, said Andersen.

The Strathmore Fire Department practiced
their ice rescue on the lake at Kinsmen Park
on March 22. According to the fire department, there was about two feet of ice at the
time and they plan to practice some more
rescues on thinner ice in the coming weeks.
Rockford Lions Community Club held a fundraising supper and silent auction for resident Billy Rieger
and his wife Cheryl. The Lions didnt expect the turnout they had as over 210 tickets were sold for the
event and people continued to buy tickets at the door for the supper. Centered in the wheelchair is Billy

We go to the Childrens one to two times a month, last
year it was probably over 20 times that we went because
he was sicker last year, I always seemed to be going to the
Childrens Hospital.
Chase is on a nebulizer, a machine that creates a mist with
the medication poured into it.
He also does physiotherapy about 30 minutes later using
a Vibratory Pep machine, which creates backpressure in his
lungs that helps move the mucus out.
With the mucus building up in his lungs and being so
thick he is more prone to infections, he has a fungus in his
lungs that they cant seem to get rid of, he is allergic to all
the anti-fungal medications, was on steroids for two years
which werent working, and he now goes for injections every
month to kind of bind the allergies in his lungs so that he
can breathe without extra coughing.

He takes about 32 pills a day and thats without any extra
added on antibiotics or any of the other stuff added to it. He
has to take pills with each meal, and its pancreatic enzymes,
so that he can absorb his food, said Andersen.
If you looked at him right now you would not think he
was any different than any other kid out there. It is tough
listening to him cough and knowing that theres something
right there that he just cant get out and your helpless, just
sitting there.
Its tough when he says he doesnt want to take pills anymore because hes the only one in school or around thats
has to take pills when hes eating, its tough when hes got
eczema and he sweats and his skin is burning and everything is burning his skin, but then you watch him with (a)
big smile on his face.

The Wheatland Cowboys and Cowgirls Rodeo Society held their final rodeo
event of the season at Lausens Indoor Arena south of Strathmore on March
21. This was the societys fifth season, and the kids competed in events that
included pole bending, steer daubing, roping, barrel racing and more. Some

The fifth annual Wheatland Cowboys and Cowgirls
Rodeo Society (WCCRS) rodeo saw many young cowboys and cowgirls show
their skills off and entertain
the crowd at the Lawsons Indoor Arena on March 21-22.
There was a large local
contingent in the rodeo as
90 per cent of the participants were from the area.
Its a series that happens
all winter long and there is
12 events. It happens for 60
kids that are in Grade 12 and
younger, said Crystal Stevens, organizer of the event.
They are categorized

by skill level and age. The
events they do are barrel
racing, pole bending, goat
tying, steer daubing and we
can also do roping events as
well.
This years event was an
enormous success as the
event was near capacity for
registrants.
It was a very successful year, we had almost had
full registration and we had
our banquet on Sunday and
awarded beautiful prizes for
kids that did well all year.
They received beautiful
coats for being the champion and they also earned
cash money the day of the
rodeo, said Stevens.

The WCCRS also like to
recognize all participants.
Everyone competed well,
I think its important to us
that we highlight all the kids
that competed and generally

Something on a Stick Day celebrates things on a stick.

Isnt this just a neat day? We thought youd agree.
So what comes on a stick? Practically anything. The first
thing that comes to mind is popsicles and fudgecicles.

On March 1, he began his 21,585 kilometre trek

across the country, starting in Victoria and scheduled to wrap up in St. Johns by next January.
Edward Fast Eddy Dostaler was inspired by famous Canadian sports icons Terry Fox and Rick
Hansen to run across Canada to raise awareness
and funds for Alzheimers and Breast Cancer research.
I decided to do this run when I was 15 I
would run across Canada one way for Alzheimers
after I did a research paper on Heroes of Canada
and it seemed like a selfless act that they were
doing, said Dostaler. I picked (Rick and Terry),
because it didnt personally affect me whatsoever,
but it was on the backburner in my mind when I
would do it.
While on his run this far, he has enjoyed the
scenery along the way.
A lot of people dont know this, but there is
some beautiful scenery in Kamloops, said Dostaler. When you get to take those pictures, you get
to meet new people, the smells are great, but its
the interactions with the touching stories people
have for you.
He wanted to do a run for a cause that did not
affect him personally, such as Alzheimers, but it
became more than just an ordinary cross-country
awareness tour.
Dostaler is doing this run solo and felt as if that
was the best way to raise awareness about cancer
and cut costs down.
He wanted to zigzag across the country because he thought it would raise more awareness
and you take populations like Edmonton, where
you can cover more distances and raise a lot more
awareness for the causes that way, said Heather
Osborne, communications rep for Fast Eddy.
She added that health issues are the main concern and that Dostaler has to let them know frequently how he is doing.
Obviously there is added risks when you run
by yourself, so he sends out a signal every 10 minutes which is also really neat because people can
follow him wherever he goes, said Osborne.
While running in each province, he wants to
raise more funds towards cancer and Alzheimers
research with a lengthy jog.
Hes doing 24-hour runs in each province to
try and increase the amount of funds raised for
the causes, as well as building more awareness so
people can come up to him about why he is running, said Osborne.

The Strathmore High School boys and girls
rugby teams are hoping to get the same consistent compete level from a season ago.
Girls head coach Jerry Flaws will get a better
idea of what his team will look like once other
school sports have finished.
Its hard to tell right now because we havent
started, with (our) basketball teams doing well,
we dont have gym time, but well know just
after spring break, said Flaws.
He is optimistic, with the players coming in,
that the team will see success.
I think with the athletes coming into the program, well do well, said Flaws. Our goal again
is to win zones and qualify for provincials and I
think we have a good shot at doing that.
Flaws admits that the players that are arriving
this year will have to work hard to fill the void.
Itll be hard to replace, we lost eight starters graduated from last year out of our 15 in
the starting line up. Hopefully, with the athletes
coming in, they wont have the rugby knowledge, but their athletics will really come around
and build for the next couple, said Flaws. It
seems like every year were teaching a third of
the team the game, but this year well be teaching half the team the game. Well always start
slow and hopefully theyll learn the fundamentals of the game and once they get a grasp of
that then well move on to bigger strategies.
There are no tryouts as every player is welcome.
The girls will begin the season with a trip to
Ontario for a rugby tournament in mid-April
followed the next week with a tournament in
Vulcan.
Meanwhile, boys head coach Brad Steele is
very impressed with how committed the players
are, coming into the season with a high fitness
level.
Theyve been enthusiastic, working out on
their own a number of times a week, said Steele.
Thats never happened before, these guys want
to get in shape and they want to get started as
soon as possible.
He expects the boys to compete and earn every try they get.
Were in a competitive zone, but we should
be winning rugby games, said Steele. Were going to be a mixture of players, but because we
have as many as 12 players returning which is
a lot thats a big deal when you start the year
with that many players to know the game.
The boys will also begin in mid-April.

The UFA Bisons just could not seem to capitalize on their chances in Game 2 of the best-of-five
AMHL championship series and it cost them, as
the CAC Gregg Distributors were able to squeak
out a 3-2 win to tie the series at one game apiece.
Head coach Dan MacDonald was alright with
the adversity faced in their first defeat of the postseason on March 22.
I think we were a little nervous in the first and
better in the second (period of Game 2), said
MacDonald. I thought our third period was really
good, but thats the way it is, were playing a real
good team. Weve got to be ready sooner and be
more prepared.
He added that CAC just came ready to play
hockey and his team did not quite match that
compete level.
They just played hockey the way its supposed
to be played, said MacDonald. They skate, shoot
and play hard, and got good size and we just
didnt counteract. They scored with 1:55 to go
and we had some good chances that we didnt
score on and they scored on their one.
You got two teams who win their divisions and
you get those kind of games. We won last game
with an empty net and they comeback and beat
us.
The Bisons, who are a great puck moving team,
seemed to have taken until the third period to
get going and something that needs to be better

next game.
The biggest thing for us is that we have to
move the puck faster and we did that in the third
period, said MacDonald. We have to move it
more offensively.
Kyle Gordon and Davis Sheldon provided the
offense in the Game 2 loss.
In the Game 1 victory on March 20, MacDonald
admits it was a good feeling to start the series on
the right foot with a 4-2 win.
I felt really (good) because we won and thats
the best I can say, said MacDonald. We werent
our best that game and at this time of the season
its where the chips fall. Sometimes you just dont
get that break, but you got to keep fighting to get
those breaks.
Barrett Sheen, Will Conley, Gary Haden, and
Jordan McConnell with an empty netter, scored
in the win.
Game 3 was on March 25 in Edmonton (result
unavailable as of press time) and Game 4 is back
in Strathmore on March 27 (8 p.m.). Game 5, if
necessary, will be back in Edmonton on March 29
(2:15 p.m.).
Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountain Raiders tripleA bantam team is tied at two games each with the
Fort Saskatchewan Raiders after splitting Games
3 and 4 on the road March 21-22 in the league
final.
The decisive Game 5 was played on March 24 in
Okotoks (result was unavailable as of press time).

The Rocky Mountain Raiders female bantam triple-A team is off to

the league final after beating the
Calgary Outlaws on March 22 for
the South Division title in the series
clinching third game.
Three local Wheatland players,
goaltender Erin Fargey and defensemen Karissa Hammond and Emma
Borbandy, are making an impact
this post season for Jordan Fentons
squad.
Theyre all playing well and being key contributors, said Fenton.
Fargey has played goal for us for all
five of our playoff games and played
very well for us and thats given us
the best opportunity we can to win
in every game, even though we drop
the one game.
He has praised Hammond and
Borbandy for their strong defensive
play in helping their goaltender out.
Borbandy is one of our top defensemen that is one of our top players
and she brings a focus and a determination with her to the rink every
time she comes, said Fenton. She
has had a very good playoff season and one of the key components
along with Karissa Hammond that
we depend on, on our backend.
He has liked the way that both of
his defensemen have been able to
adapt to both sides of the puck.
Theyve both been really key (on
the) defensive side of the game, but
all of our offense has started with
good first passes and breaking out of
our own zone and going with speed
through the neutral zone, taking the
puck to the net, said Fenton.
Both have been directing pucks
towards the net and have really
helped us out in the offensive zone.
He admits that the girls have found
their stride in the postseason.
I think the girls found a different
gear it seems like in the playoffs and
theyve stepped their game up playing a strong puck possession game,
and for the most part, have matched
their opponents very well and work
extremely hard, said Fenton.
The Raiders will take on the Edmonton Lightning in the final and
Fenton figures it will be a close
match-up.
It should be a really good competitive series with Edmonton. We
match up well against them and if
we continue to play a real strong
team game, we should have a good
chance at winning the title again,
said Fenton.
The series begins in Cochrane
(6:45 p.m.) on March 27, then goes
to Edmonton March 28 (5:15 p.m.)
and, if necessary, on March 29 back
in Cochrane (5:30 p.m.).

Its certainly opened to the public,
anybody can attend and money is split
between projects that we do at the golf
course. We always donate to a charitable organization and this year $2,500
from that night is going to the Albert
55 Plus Summer Games (Committee),
said Brian Bassen, general manager of
the golf club. With the 55 Plus Games
coming to Strathmore, we just thought
it would be a good year to commit to
that group.
The other funds raised through the
silent auction will go towards various
projects that are ongoing around the
club.
The one that comes to mind is a
brand new deck that weve built just
outside the clubhouse, said Bassen.
Then any other projects some of the
other money will go towards like the
painting of the club house, our front
sign that we bought from the high
school, so a few different things.
The evenings itinerary will include a
dinner where its mainly a time to socialize, as well as a silent auction.
Its a $15 dinner ticket and that gets
a full roast beef dinner with dessert, we
have a cash bar and its really just a social event, said Bassen. Well get a lot
of members, people from the community here supporting it.
Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Strathmore Golf Club.

Braves defeated in Semis; Chiefs struggled

The Wheatland Braves had a solid showing at
provincials in Olds from March 19-22.
The local double-A peewee team went 2-2-1 in
the tournament and fell to a much bigger and
better Wainwright Polar Kings squad in the semifinal, losing 6-3.
Theyre a big and strong team that were fast.
They played to their skill and shot and passed
the puck well, not much wrong with that team,
said Braves head coach Keith Klemmensen. I
thought we hung in there, it was 2-1 for us after
two periods, guys were back checking hard and
working hard.
Jackson Berry was in goal and was outstanding, but realistically in third period they got a
goal early and another one shortly thereafter.
(We) tried to call a time out to stop the leak, but
it wasnt going to happen against a good team.
We did have some push back getting a goal to
make it 5-3, but it wasnt going to happen against
the best peewee team Ive seen all year.
In the round robin he felt that at times there
were glimpses of promise.
In our 2-1 loss to Grande Prairie in the round
robin, got outworked and that was enough, said
Klemmensen. We outplayed them the rest of the
game, but we just allowed them a couple of goals
in the first period that we shouldnt have. We also
tied Okotoks 2-2 in the round robin.
Their only victories came against Springbank
(5-2 win) and Beaumont (9-0 win).

He was proud of how his team did, considering
almost half of his players were in their first year.
You have to remember that there is seven
first-year guys on this team and Ill bet you that
nobody else up there had (that many) first-year
guys on their team, said Klemmensen. These
guys did the best they could and there is going
to be some guys that are returning next year that
are going to be that much better,
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Chiefs had a very
rough go of it at provincials on the same weekend in Red Deer.
The boys ended up finishing eighth out of 10
teams with a record of 1-2-1.
Head coach Devin Olson thought they were out
of sync all weekend and just did not get results.
We didnt play good and had a hard time with
schedule like we were the only team to play
four games in two days and we were in a pretty
tough, said Olson.
The local double-A midget team was down a
defensemen due to suspension, which made it
tougher on the team.
We were tired and Grady Strath, one of our
d-men, got suspended in a game and we were
down to four defensemen the last game, said Olson.
The Chiefs will forget about dreadful provincials as they still have a chance at a league title.
Play resumes this weekend back in Red Deer
with Games 3 and 4 slated for March 27 and 28
at 7:45 p.m., with the series tied at one.

Katie Sommerfeld (lovingly known as Oma) passed away
peacefully, surrounded by her family, on March 20, 2015 at
the age of 90 at the Sagewood Manor in Strathmore, Alberta. Katie was
born Kthe Gertrud Marianne Thmer in Geringswalde, Germany on June 28,
1924, daughter of Arthur Erhard and Selma Gertrud Raschig, sister to Jutta
and Elke. She immigrated to Canada in 1952 and married her first husband,
Paul Taube, deceased Jan. 30, 1957. She remarried on December 12, 1958
to Ernest Sommerfeld. She leaves to mourn her husband of 56 years, Ernest
and her eight children, Elke (Lorne Ball), Diane (Jerry Cunningham), Stephina (Tom Pirie), Stephen; Patricia, Richard, David (Sharon), and Dixie (Kevin
OKeefe predeceased August 31, 2010); nine grandchildren Kathryn
(Gerry Gallagher), Jennifer (Tim Paulin), Miles (Chelsea Heryford), Courtney,
Jaime (Nick Smith), Kaitlin, Eric, Cassandra, Alyse; five great grandchildren,
Grayson, Kayle, Mikayla, Brooke and baby Hudson. At 90 years young, Katie
has been many things: daughter, wife, mother, devoted friend, Oma (grandmother), great grandmother, gardener, cook/baker (her specialties doughnuts, pflamen kuchen and cinnamon buns), outstanding seamstress (making
anything from wedding gowns to dresses, suits, baby outfits, blankets/afghans, doilies, table clothes, and millions of socks, mittens and scarves), and
a generous feeder of chickens, cats, dogs, geese, turkeys, lambs, calves, and
ducks. No wayfaring strangers or friends were ever turned away from her
table for a meal. Katie managed the farm many times while Ernie travelled
long distances for work. This included milking as many as 16 cows by hand,
hauling hay and water, mending fences, shepherding livestock, and on top of
this, raising 8 children. Katie volunteered many times for the Teepee Creek
Stampede Association, the North Kleskun Emmaus Church (regular member),
and the Teepee Creek School. Katie was an award winning swimmer in her
school days and carried on throughout her life. She greatly enjoyed organizing large family gatherings, dancing, playing cards, board games, and listening to music (especially Roger Whitaker). Katie was fluent in her native German as well as English and returned many times to Germany to visit with her
sisters and other relatives. In 1997, Katie and Ernie sold their farm and retired
to Rockyford, where they became an active part of the community. It was
rare that Katie missed any of her grandchildrens ringette or hockey games,
birthday parties and she was always known for bringing a bucket of orange
slices for the boys on the hockey team. She was also active in the Rockyford
Friendship Center and soon became a familiar and well-loved member of the
Rockyford community. Katie was very sociable, outgoing, and compassionate.
She lived her life to the fullest, making countless friends along the way. She
will always be remembered and sadly missed. Heartfelt gratitude from Katies family to the wonderful staff at the Wheatland Lodge and Sagewood for
providing such excellent care. A memorial service will be held on Thursday,
April 2, 2015 at Lord of All Lutheran Church (112 Lakeside Blvd, Strathmore)
at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the ALS
