Diagnosing typical causes of bearing damage may be easier than you think. By looking closely at customers damaged
hubs, you may be able to help them identify what went wrong, so they can avoid those problems in the future. Use this quick
reference sheet to compare customers hubs with these photos below, then share the information with them. Its just one
more way you add extra value for your customers.
Tighten axle lock nut to proper torque to help avoid rough and worn
surface under the nut.
Cause: Loss of bearing retention, the leading cause of hub bearing damage, may lead to wheel vibration and/or excessive
noise. Bearings lose retention when the axle retaining nut backs off, which can happen when it is not properly torqued or
it has lost its self-retention feature. That can cause the setting of the bearings inside of the hub to change and results in
misalignment and accelerated wear.
Solution: Always use a new axle retaining nut and tighten it to the proper torque.

end application.
WARNING
Diagnosis: When replacing a wheel bearing with a separable hub, inspect the
hub barrel before installation into the new bearing assembly. Check the hub
barrel outer diameter (OD) for signs of damage from the bearing that was removed
from the hub. Look for steps in the barrel surface, or discoloration due to heat
damage from cone turning. Replace the hub if you find these signs of damage.
Cause: Due to the loss of axle retention or reusing a worn hub, the cone or inner
race can spin on the hub and accelerate wear on the cone bore and hub barrel.
This cone turning can be an indication of loss of bearing retention or an improper
fit between the cone bore and hub barrel diameter.
Solution: If you see damage to the hub barrel, replace it.

cable or a smashed wheel speed sensor.
Diagnosis: Look for damage from sharp objects or evidence that the cable was
caught in a pinch point. To avoid this problem in the future, ensure the cable is
routed through all of the sensor cable retaining clips. If the sensor cable is not
damaged, examine the external sensor for cracks in the sensor body or a loose
cable in the sensor head.
CAUTION
Cause: The sensor cable may have been damaged, pinched or bent by sharp
objects. Sensor cable damage is the leading cause of ABS malfunctions. A
smashed wheel speed sensor may have been damaged during installation.
Solution: Route sensor cable through all retaining clips.
