of the few things he has in common with most of his people.
In 27 BBY Outbound Flight, a massive exploration mission consisting of six
Dreadnaught Cruisers led by Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth, had unwittingly
scheduled a sublight flythrough of a system on the edge of Chiss space, and it
was here that a powerful Trade Federation battlegroup stationed itself in
order to intercept and destroy them, led by Kinman Doriana, a personal agent
of Darth Sidious.
A young Chiss officer in the Expansionary Fleet known as Thrawn made a
highly favorable impression on Darth Sidious by defeating the Trade
Federation ships through far superior tactics in the face of a huge numeric
disadvantage and finally having a HoloNet discussion with Sidious himself.

Varuk's fate was a direct result of that highly favorable impression.


Having had a glimpse of what such a rarity as an ambitious, even passionate,
member of a disciplined, deliberate and strategically-inclined race like the
Chiss could do, a bargain was struck between Darth Sidious, Thrawn, and
certain members of the Ascendancy. The first child born to one of a select few
noble families to show true promise with the Force would be pledged to the
Empire and delivered no later than their tenth birthday, something enabled by
the Chiss' rapid rate of maturing.
Each participant in this pact had their own ulterior motives, but that had little
impact on the final result. Varuk was that child, and he was delivered to his
new Master for training when he was only eight.
