Instructional Need
At Genesee Community College, students self-select online courses without consulting an advisor or utilizing
the resources available to guide students toward a learning modality suited for their skillsets. As a result, many
students struggle with multiple aspects of their online courses from understanding the need to log in on or
prior to the first day of class to how to manage their day-to-day schedules to fit online coursework in.
Instructional Goal
In an online orientation course students will learn how and why to log into the course management system
prior to the start of term to read the syllabus, acquire necessary course materials, line up test proctors, and
map out a schedule to successfully complete course requirements on time. Students will learn the importance
of adhering to their schedule during the term as well as how to access library data bases, support services, and
administrative information as needed.

Terminal Objective: Explain the importance of identifying and acquiring course materials and
textbooks prior to the start of term.
