Article Analysis:

In the article Does Unemployment Increase Crime Rate? the authors start the article with
some brief introduction about crimes in normal life. The author purpose is to inform that
crime is difficult to overcome since ago to the intended audience which is general public. The
issue that brought by the author is that whether unemployment increase the crime rate. The
author point of view is in favour of unemployment is just one of the factors that will increase
the crime rate. The author is also bias as the author use word such greatest, major, and yield
to convince the audience when describing the effect of unemployment to the crime rate. The
author use his tone of serious to be more convincing.
The first main point author introduce is that most people believe and postulate that
unemployment is by far, one of the major factors leading to an increase in crime rate. The
author then present some of supporting details from research findings that was conducted
by BOSCAR in March 2012 to analyse the relation between unemployment and crime in
Australia. The author assume that readers know the BOSCAR organization, meanwhile the
Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research in Australia is known as BOCSAR. This can make
the supporting detail losing its validity.
Instead of adding supporting details to the point, the author added point that opposing the
first point which is that similar studies by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in
collaboration with Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that the graph from the analysis
was rather irregular. Shows that unemployment may actually not affect the crime rate. This
point is clearly a counter-agreement to the first point. Some others supporting details given
by the author in the whole article is some expert opinions by some economist Bruce
Weinberg, Eric Gould, and David Mustard, which is that unemployment is linked to higher
crime rate but it is not always a direct cause.
Furthermore the author also included other factors that also affect the rate of crime other
than unemployment. The author made an inductive reasoning in paragraph 9 about other
factors such social and political structures, and overall culture which is also tend to increase
the crime rate. Moreover, the author state that unemployment, if does lead to crime, it will
increase the number of property crime rather violent crime. This point is supported by the
author opinion which using some possibility words and poorly supported. The next point is
that most of criminal not come from under the unemployment category, which most of them
is professional criminals and acts for money. This is also supporting details from authors
opinion. The author conclude that the unemployment is definitely one of the factors that may
lead to an increase in crime rates but it seldom works individually
The supporting details used by the author is objective because the information comes from
external sources. It is also facts and hard evidence, for example, the research finding made
by FBI in collaboration with BLS. The arguments is valid because it is supported by facts that
can be verified and strong, and possible to check for it accuracy. There are also some points
that seem to be correct, but no facts or strong support such the other factors than
unemployment that increasing the crime rate. Therefore it is the authors opinions or beliefs.
Meanwhile the argument is complete because author considers opposing views and offers a
counterargument against them. The arguments is also less creditable because there are
some sources that been incorrectly cited so that the accuracy of the data is questionable
such the BOSCAR organization.

In a summary, the authors stand that unemployment is not a major factor that causing the
increasing of the crime rates is weak. The authors presented a weak argument because of
the weak supporting details.it is also because the first and second strong arguments is
contradict which each other. Thus make the authors stand weak with weak argument left. It
is recommend that the author include more valid arguments to strengthen the authors stand.
