As the New Year begins, the vision for Canaan in 2015 will be to gravitate from
church work to the work of the church. It is in the work of the church that we are
fulfilling the mission and mandate of Jesus Christ. With Canaan's mission and
core values providing the framework, it's imperative for us to stay focused on the
work of the church. For this reason, this year's traditional direction will shift to
accommodate a more effective direction among all ministries in Canaan. This
new direction will embrace the need of simplifying our ministries in order to
have maximum ministry impact in the church and the community.
Notably, in the book, Simple Church, the authors, Thom S. Rainer and Eric Geiger, emphasized four key points:
* Clarity in ministry
* Movement in ministry
* Alignment in ministry
* Focus in ministry
My preaching and teaching in 2015 will largely deal with these same key points as
some of the traditional activities and celebrations in Canaan are streamlined. For
example, every ministry in the church (40+ ministries) has had or have requested
a day of celebration. If we honored each request, at least over 40 weeks in a year
would be dedicated to anniversaries. As a result and after careful consideration, it
is not practical to have every ministry celebrated over the course of the year at
the expense of the overall mission of the church.
Therefore, in order to accommodate this change in 2015, we will have a Hallelujah Sunday to recognize and celebrate all ministries of the church on one special day in May of 2015. It is very important that every ministry in our church
have this recognition. With this in mind, Hallelujah Sunday will be a new and
exciting day in the life of Canaan, where every ministry in the church comes together in the name of congregational intimacy, with the intent of lifting up Jesus
and church unity.
