Let'sstartfromtheverybeginning,shallwe?
Allmatteriscomposedofatoms.Insolids,theseatomsarepackedverytightly
together,whichiswhytheyareerm,solid.Theatomsareforcedtogetherand
don'tflowaroundmuch.Inagashowever,theatomsareabletomovearound
freely.Sofreelyinfact,thatgasesdon'thavea"form",andinsteadtakethe
formofwhatevercontainertheyarein.Gasescanbeheldat
differentpressures.Thepressureofagasisareflectionofhowmanyatoms
areforcedintoagivenspace.Byusingapump,onecanforcemoregasatoms
intoaspace,increasingthepressure.Ifyouhaveacontainerfilledwithagas
thathashadextraatomspumpedintoit,andyouopenthecontainer,thehigh
pressureatomswillmovetotheareawiththelowpressureatomsuntilthe
overallpressureisequal.Theconceptthatahighpressuregaswillmovetoan
areaoflowerpressureistheconceptthatwilldriveourcompressedairturbine.
Thecompressedgaswillmovethroughtheturbinetotheareaoutsidethe
turbine.Asitmovesthroughit,theairwillpushthefins,andcausetheturbine
torotate.Thegaseswillmovetowardthecenteroftheturbine,wheretheyexit
theexhausthole.

IdesignedmycompressedairturbineinInkscape.Everythingwaskindofmade
upasIwentalongsinceI'dneverusedtheprogram,andhadnopurposein
mindforthefinalproduct.
NotfamiliarwithInkscape?Ihighlyrecommendreadingthroughthis
(http://inkscape.org/doc/advanced/tutorialadvanced.html)first.IThelpedme
findmywayaroundandwillhelpyoufollowtheinstructionsbelowbetter.
Todrawthecenterturbine,IdidthefollowinginInkscape:
1. Makeanewimage.Click"FIle>DocumentProperties".Setdefaultunitto
"inches""width"and"height"to1andgridto1/16"or.0625.
2. Drawacircle.Clickthecenterofthegrid,andholddown"Shift"and"Ctrl".
Dragthecursortoacorner,whereitwillsnaptothegridtoformyour
perfect,1"diametercircle.
3. Drawahexagon.Iwantedmyturbinetohavesixfins.Usethesame
techniqueasthatusedforthecircleinthepreviousstep,butstopwhenthe
cornersofthehexagoncontacttheedgeofthecircle.Itmayhelptogointo
theDocumentPropertiesandturnoffgridsnappingforthis.
4. Convertto"nodes".Selectthehexagonandpress"Shift+Ctrl+C".Thiswill
changetheobjecttoapath,whichwillletusmanipulateitmoreeasily.
5. Ontherighthandside,thereisatoolbar,withabuttontoallow"snaptocusp
nodes".Ihadthisfeatureturnedonforthemajorityofmynodemanipulation
work.
6. Drawguidelines.Idrawalinesegmentfromthetopnodeofmyhexagon
down.Thissegmentwascopied,pasted,androtated60degreesmultiple
times,andplacedonallthecornersofthehexagon.
7. Nodemanipulation.Selectthehexagon,andanode.Usethe"breakpath"
functiontobreakthepathatthatnode.Selectanodeatthebrokenpoint
anddragittothebottomofthelinesegment.Thisiswhereitshould"snap
tocuspnode".Repeatthisforeachcorner.Selecteachcorner,and"join
selectednodes"tomakeonesolidpath.

Centerhousing:

2. Selectthecircleinthecenteroftheturbine.Converttopath.Breakpathat
selectednodes.Iselectedtheoneontherighthandsideofthecircle.
3. Usethe"DrawBeziercurvesandstraightlines"tool,alongwiththe"snapto
nodes"functiontodrawlinesfromthebrokencircletothesideofthe
housing.
4. Remembertosavethisasadifferentfile,soyoudon'toverwriteandlosethe
Centerhousing.
Drivehousing:
wheretheshaftwillleavethehousing,andbeabletodowork.
1. StartwiththeCenterhousingwedrewabove.
2. Selectanddeletetheturbineandcircle,leavingjustthecentercirclein
place.
3. Saveasadifferentfile.
Exhausthousing:
whereairwillexittheturbine,andtheshaftwillbesupported.
1. StartwiththeDrivehousingfromabove.
2. Copypastethecenterhole,andmoveitdownslightly.

rotarytoolwithacutoffwheel.Thesewereputintotheholesonthecorners,
andheldinplacewithequivalentnuts.Theholesonthecornersweremade
slightlywiderwithahanddrillforeaseofassembly.
Theshaftwasmadeusinga2"sectionofthesame632threadedrod,andtwo
oftheturbinepieceswerethreadedontothecenter.Twosmallwasherswere
usedtoclosethespaceinbetweentheturbinepiecesandthesidesofthe
housing.Thecenterholeswerebothmadeslightlywiderwithahanddrillto
allowforthethreadedrodtomovemoresmoothly.

Asmallsectionof1/8"brasstubewascutusingaDremelrotarytool,andtheair
intakewaswidenedtoallowittobeepoxiedintoplaceinsidetheturbineafterit
wasboltedtogether.

Thereyouhaveit!Aminiaturecompressedairturbine!
I'mnotsureifIwilleverusethisforaproject,butImaysomeday!Morethan
anything,I'vealwaysfoundturbinesfascinating,andlovethesoundtheymake
whentheygetgoing.Thepossibilitiesforthislittleturbinearequitewide.
Thisdesignmakesasmallturbine,roughly1.5"x1.5"x0.625"indimensions.
WhatIthinkisreallyawesomeisthatitcanbemadelargerandtheoretically
morepowerfulbysimplycuttingandboltinginmorelayersforairinput,more
turbinepieces,andmakingmoreexhaustholesintheExhausthousing.
