The last few weeks have been

very challenging for Malaysia
Airlines with MH370 capturing the
worlds attention. Our thoughts

Enjoy Brazilian art at Pinacoteca
do Estado
This beautiful neoclassical museum
houses an excellent collection of
local art, and is a pleasant place to
spend an afternoon. Free admission
on Thursdays (6pm to 10pm) and
Saturdays. The caf downstairs
overlooks the adjacent Luz Park
with its large tropical trees and
modern sculptures. Also nearby
is the gorgeous late-Victorian Luz
train station. It was assembled in
Glasgow, UK, then disassembled
and sent here for reassembly.

Grab a bite at Mercado Publico
For a taste of local life, a visit to the
citys oldest public market is a must.
Here you will find fresh produce as
well as local crafts, coffee shops and
restaurants. Highly recommended is
the Banca 40 ice cream parlour and
Gambrinus Restaurant for fish, beef
and craft beer.

The Lacerda Elevator in Salvador.

Ride the Lacerda Elevator
This art deco elevator is the easiest
and cheapest way to move between
the upper city (Cidade Alta) and
lower city (Cidade Baixa). The first
elevators in the early 17th century
were operated manually via a rope
and pulley system. Steam elevators
were later used and finally replaced
by electric elevators in the early
20th century. Enjoy amazing sunset
views from the top.

Walking the French Riveira

Cte dAzur or the French Riviera
is the Mediterranean coast in the
southeast corner of France. In
Grasse, the perfume capital of the
world, paths lead to hilltops and
plateaus with stunning views of the
coastline. Near the medieval village
of Gourdon, explore the Gorges
du Loup, the French equivalent to
the Grand Canyon. You can also do
rock climbing here.
Horse riding in the Camargue
The Camargue horses are indigenous
to the Camargue area in the south
of France and are one of the oldest
breeds in the world. They are born
dark brown or black, but turn white
from the fourth year. Known as the
horses of the sea thousands of years
of living in the harsh wilderness of
marshes and wetlands have made the
Camargue horses hardy and fearless.

Camargue is western Europes

Rhne and the Mediterranean Sea.
Its biological diversity makes it
home to more than 400 species
of birds including pink flamingoes.

Dont put away your winter gear just yet. You

can ski in the summer too in the French Alps.

Summer skiing in Les Deux Alpes

You dont have to wait till winter
to ski. Les Deux Alpes is one of
the few places in the Alps to offer
summer skiing. The lifts will open
from 21 June to 30 August 2014,
7.15am to 12.30pm. Besides the
Grand Motte glacier, the lift also
gives access to hiking and mountain
biking routes.

A bicycle (packed in a bike box with handlebars fixed sideways and pedals
removed) and one item of skiing equipment can be included as part of

Tidal bore or locally known as
benak are waves generated by a
reverse flow that occurs when tide
water rushes up a narrow river
mouth. During spring tide, waves
can go up to 2 or 3 metres high.
The Batang Lupar benak is the
worlds fourth largest.
A yearly festival is organised around
it. Besides tidal bore surfing, there
are other activities like a longboat
race, stage shows and food fair.

Sabah Dragon Boat Race

This race is held in conjunction with
the Duan Wu festival that honours
the Chinese poet and minister,
Qu Yuan. Accused of treason and
exiled, he drowned himself in the
river. Villagers who could not find
his body dropped rice dumplings
filled with water chestnut and
minced meat into the river so that
the fish would eat them instead
of his body. This dumpling can be
enjoyed at the race which attracts
teams from as far as Hong Kong,
China and Japan. The colourful
boats are decorated to look like
ferocious dragons and are rowed
to the beating of Chinese drums.

Change of airport in Dubai

One of the runways at the Dubai International Airport (DXB)
will be closed from 1 May to 20 Jul 2014 for resurfacing works.
During this period, Malaysia Airlines will operate from the
Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) in
Jebel Ali, 37km southwest of the Dubai City Centre. The airports are
about one hour apart. Shuttle service between the two airports
is provided.

Codesharing on US routes
Following a route rationalisation exercise, Malaysia Airlines
has stopped flying to Los Angeles from 30 Apr 2014. We regret
this inconvenience and have made alternative arrangements for
those with bookings for flights after this date.
Through a codesharing arrangement with American Airlines and
Japan Airlines, we now offer seamless one-stop air connectivity
between Kuala Lumpur and major US cities such as Atlanta,
Boston, Washington, Houston, Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle,

Last February, we flew to Barcelona from London with oneworld

member, British Airways. Friends have been telling us what a unique
city this is and we were certainly amazed when we visited several of
Antoni Gauds masterpieces Sagrada Familia, Casa Mil, Casa Batll,
Park Gell and Gell Palace.
Though Gauds works were completed more than 100 years ago
(except for Sagrada Familia) his architectural designs were so unique
that they were ahead of his time and perhaps, ours too.
Apart from architectural wonders, the local food and markets in
Barcelona should not be missed. The La Boqueria market has rich
selections of fresh fruits and fruit juice and there are many restaurants
to explore for the citys famous seafood tapas and paella.
