I received an invitation to my Aunt Ruths 90th birthday party.
No presents, just your presence, please. It read. The only
thing that my Aunt Ruth wanted for her birthday was for
people to show up and enjoy themselves. She was always
a great conversationalist and all she wanted for her birthday
was to talk to family and friends. She got her wish.
My Aunt, Ruth Loftus, was a very proper woman who
knew how things should be. She never corrected any of her
nieces or nephews directly but would say, I dont know about
that. If we mentioned that we wanted to do something that
she didnt approve of. Of all of my aunts, Aunt Ruth stood
out above the rest. And as I was soon to find out, all of my
cousins felt the same way.
I have to admit that Ive been to a lot of birthday parties.
This one was one of the best and by far the most memorable.
It was held in the Community Center in the Village of
Greenhills. Both the location and the weather were perfect.
In attendance were not only a nice percentage of her
nieces and nephews, but also the people with whom she
worked with many years ago. I was surprised to see so
many people she knew in her working life attending since
by this time Aunt Ruth had been retired for over 25 years.
It was great for me to visit with so many of my cousins at
one time on a happy occasion. So many times I only get to
see them during someones Calling Hours. This was a nice,
unhurried, time to visit with everyone.
After the fellowship and dinner, it was about time to leave.
My Aunt Ruths only child, Patty, stood up and thanked
everyone for coming to wish her mom a happy birthday.
Then she mentioned that since there was such a wide
variety of people present who knew her mom from different
areas of her life that, Why dont we start at my right and
just mention a favorite short story about Mom, a pleasant
memory, or just simply how you knew her.
That simple little request turned into two hours of joy
as people who worked with Aunt Ruth, neighbors from the
old neighborhood and all of us cousins told short stories of
my aunt. One of my cousins mentioned how they werent
allowed in the Living Room because it was for Company.
Aunt Ruth didnt want that room tore up. We all roared with
laughter, because each cousin could relate to that. Another
cousin added how, when they would visit Aunt Ruth, their
dad would pull over about a block away and remind them
to stay out of the Living Room. Past office mates told how
Aunt Ruth, as an accounting firms office manager, was very
strict and didnt let even the slightest error slide by. But she
corrected an employee in such a way that it was almost
like a compliment. The stories kept coming as at least sixty
people told their own stories of Aunt Ruth.
We were so involved in what was going on I dont think
anyone realized that the Community Center staff had cleaned
off the tables, put everything away and many had left for the
evening. We had overextended our welcome by quite a bit. As
we all left the conversation continued in the parking lot. That
event had stirred everyones memories of growing up. It was a
unifying event not only with my family but everyone who knew
Ruth Loftus. And I think it overwhelmed her daughter Patty.
She never expected that everyone would have something to
