1.

Defination of belt drive:

A system for transmitting power from one shaft to another.
2. List of Application:
Conveyor belt
Farming, mining, and logging applications, such as bucksaws, sawmills,
threshers, silo blowers, conveyors
Electrical generators
Water pumps (for wells, mines, or swampy farm fields)
Factory machines with individual electric motors.
Compressors
Lawn mowers
Fitness bikes of belt drives
Agricultural machinery
Food mixers
Washing machines
3. Types of belt drives and characteristics:
Types
Flat belts

Round belts

Characteristic
traction layer made of oriented
polyamide with two covers of
elastomer leather or textiles material
and one intermediate layer of fabric
on each side.
Smooth running
Minimal maintenance
Flat belts can be installed very
simply and securely

V belts

Round belts are a circular cross

section belt designed to run in a
pulley with a 60 degree V-groove.
Round belts are are generally made
of rubber.
The V-groove transmits torque
through a wedging action, thus
increasing friction.
V belts have a V shaped crosssection, which rests against the side
of V pulley under tension.
The V shaped cross-section
prevents belt from slipping off.
Operate noiselessly and without
lubrication
Absorb objectionable and harmful
vibrations

Function
Flat belts are used in power
transmission and conveying
systems

generally used for light loads,

such as in a sewing machine
or a vacuum cleaner.

simply transfer rotation from

the powered pulley to one or
more driven pulleys

Timing/toothed
belts

Positive slip proof engagement

Virtually no elongation (stretching)
due to wear
Power transmission efficiency is not
lost with use
Long, dependable trouble-free
service
Clean operation, no need for
lubrication

transfer direct motion for

indexing or timing purposes

4. Belt tension and misalignment:

Failure
Premature belt failure

Belt Tension
Belts tensioned too high

Severe or abnormal belt

wear
Banded (joined) belt
problems
Belt noise and unusual
vibration

Tension low

Sheave misalignment

under-tensioned

Offset Misalignments

Too high tension caused

by misalignment
Low tension

Multiple belt stretch

unequally,
Low and high
Tension too low

Horizontal Angular
misalignment
Pulley not equally
sharing load
Misaligned drive

Sheave misalignment

Problems with sheaves,

belt stretches beyond
take up
V-belt turn over or jump
off sheave, etc.
Premature belt
failure

Misalignment
Sheave misalignment

(Top Surface)

Banded (Joint) belt

problem
(Belt rib come
