Safety

All work involved in the operation and maintenance of Substations including work methods and practices, employee
training and protective measures, and use of tools and equipment, shall be in accordance with the requirements of the
applicable governmental and private occupational safety and health codes and standards. Employers engaged in such
work are also required to be familiar with and comply with Vestas Corporate OH&S Manual and documents holding
specific Substation safety instructions for the relevant, Vestas shall not be responsible for any liabilities arising from
failure to comply with such requirements. Vestas reserves the right to inspect such work to ascertain such compliance.
The service technician must read and understand the Personal Protection Sheets for each of the chemicals used in this
instruction. The Personal Protection Sheets describe the safe use of chemicals within each category.
For chemicals not specified with exact name and item no., contact the local SBU for information regarding Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety instructions related to the use of the chemical.

Educational Requirements of Service Technician

At least two of the service technicians working in a Substation are required to possess valid course
certificates for the Vestas Basic Safety Training for Service Technicians, Supervisory License including
basic safety theory, first aid, fire prevention and firefighting, emergency descent and any additional safety
courses owing to local requirements.
Some tasks require one or more advanced training modules or job specific training as described in the
Vestas Technical Training Programme. The person planning a specific task must ensure that the service
technicians involved possess the proper know-how for completion of that task.

Risk Assessment

Referring JSEA, MS, RA for maintenance of 33kv Isolator in Substation.

Note

The Maintenance of 33kv Isolator requires the following work

Isolate the HV / LV supply as per the LOTO Instructions.

Disconnect the Earthing and Auxiliary supply connections.

Organise the suitable tools for maintenance of 33kv Isolator.

After maintenance connect the all removed connections (Earthing, Auxiliary supply cables, LV & HV
isolation points).

10.2 Stop the WTG.


1. Notify affected employees that the turbine will be under LOTO for 33kv Isolator maintenance work. It is
mandatory to notify Vestas site management and any sub-contractor lead technicians if sub-contractors are
on site.
2. Before entering a SCADA-equipped turbine, call the site office and site management to remotely stop the
turbine.
3. After remote shutdown, the site management must enter a note in SCADA confirming work on Substation
maintenance.
10.3 Trip the respective line up and down side SF6 Circuit Breakers 0r 33kv VCB.

10.4 Open the respective line up and down side Isolators.

10.5 Check the absence of Voltage by using High Voltage detector.

General Inspection of HV Detector and Arc flash suit.

Condition of HV Detector and working of siren.

After wearing Arc flash suit wear HT hand gloves.

Keep the HV detector near to the dead line (Dont touch the HV detector to dead line).

Observe no hearing siren at near dead line.

11. Apply the LOTO Procedure as per the LOTO instructions to


Respective line up and down side Isolators: Put Earth rods in both dead line side (always first connect
earth rod wire to earth pit connection and then put earth rod to dead line and discharge the power.) then
apply LOTO in AB Switch.

12. 33kv Isolator Working Procedure:


12.1 Visually inspect the General checks of 33kv Isolator like

General Condition of Isolator on Cleanliness.

Condition of marshalling box external internal paint.

Check the condition of Outer body welding joints.

Condition of Isolator name plate.

Before to work at any place read carefully the displayed WARNINGs.

Check the incoming side and outgoing side PG Clamps for hot spot.

Check the proper Earthing Connections.

Marshalling boxes inspections.

Gas refilling / collecting valves.

Check the cable gland nut and cable condition affected by environment.

Checks the painting condition if rusted apply paint.

Lubricate moving parts with correct lubricate.

Follow instructions given in the operating manual.

Do not leave any tools at top of the Isolator.

Do not operate the Isolator while testing or cleaning.

Check the all hardwares tightness.

12.2 Bushings:

Check the hardware tightness at cone of the bushes.

Clean and observe around the bush for any damage.

Check the mounting hardware condition.

Check the hot spot at the HV terminals.

12.3 Marshalling box.

Using cable schedule & marshalling box wiring diagram check the interlock in between control panel
and Isolator marshalling box through proper communication cable.

Check all control cable condition and nomenclature in cables.

Check the Cable and Wires ferule availability and conditions.

Check the connections tightness at all the terminals.

Check the condition of operating handle earthing connections.

Check the Tendom rod condition and connections.

Clean the inside marshalling box.

Close the unwanted cable holes to avoid entry of reptiles.

Check the cable rooting with proper cable ties.

Check the door locks condition and operating.

Check the heater, illumination lamp and aux. socket working condition etc.

13. 5S To be follow as.


1. All the structure parts and hardwares conditions are properly.
1. Do the housekeeping completely.
2. Get a conformation either all activity completed or not. If completed remove the established LOTO
system according to standards.
3. Remove the earth rod, return the PTW to respective in-charge and power up to transformer and
observe the humming noise during the time of charging. If u feels abnormality suddenly report to
management.
5. Keep door and covers firmly closed to prevent entry of dust, moisture and insects etc.
6. Ensure that Manual Operating handle is kept in the mechanism housing.
