COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

This course covers fundamental topics of operations management. Both production and service
operations will be studied. The course will include fundamental concepts and processes, analysis,
management policy, functions of operation, inventory management, various forecasting methods,
learning curves, location planning, scheduling, basic ideas on supply chain management and
related issues.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion each student will be able to:

describe the function of manufacturing and service systems management and their impacts on
strategy and competition
demonstrate the criteria for formulating strategies for competitiveness and productivity
apply forecasting tools in manufacturing system planning
apply suitable approach for designing production and service processes
create strategic capacity plans for products and services
apply principles of inventory management for superior performance
conduct hierarchical aggregate planning for manufacturing systems

analyze locations alternatives for correct location planning

COURSE MATERIALS/ TEXT:


Text: Operations Management, William J. Stevenson, 10th Edition, McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2009,
with CD. ISBN-10: 0-07-337784-1
APPROACH:
Lectures will expand upon, illustrate, and supplement the material in the text. The PowerPoint
presentation file for the lectures will be made available to the students via e-mail or by some other means
in select cases. It is your responsibility to study lectures and be attentive.

ATTENDANCE:
Attendance will be taken in class and regular attendance is imperative for successful completion of the
course. There will be a variety of in-class activities including short quizzes throughout the semester that
will aid in your learning the subject. 3% points are allocated to class attendance and participation. If you
have a valid reason for missing the meeting (e.g. illness), please call me or e-mail me explaining the

reasons for absence. We shall accept the reasons as admissible by the rules for excusing any applicable
absence.
Homework Assignments:
There will be three homework assignments. The assignments are based on the lecture and the materials
covered in text book chapters. All homework should be submitted either as attachment to e-mail to the
instructor or should be submitted in class as printed hard copy. The due dates for the assignments are
shown in the Detailed Course Schedule to follow. Assignment submitted after due date will be accepted
for correction only. It will be marked Zero.
Group discussion as well as consultation with friends is allowed for solving the assignment problem, but
individual student is responsible for submitting his /her own assignment. All assignment should have a
cover page with the name, pirate id, date of submission and assignment #.

CASE STUDY BASED GROUP REPORT:


It is expected that all of the work on analysis and actual preparation of the CASE STUDY based
written assignments should be performed in a group of 3 to 4. Report not submitted on the due
date is assigned a grade of zero. Topic may be one of the following:
- Analysis of a case study to be selected from the text book or from the following list The
analysis should include:
Company name, the business the company is involved, product portfolio, customers,
competitors, market covered by the company, long and short term goal for the company,
location of the major production or operation center, reasons for selecting the location.
Analysis on the operations strategy, conclusion
Include two alternative case studies considering the following list and the case studies
available in the text book. Your Case Study Proposal should include Team Formation
details ( Name, student Id of the team members).
Submit your case Study proposal by June 06, 2012.

Note : 1. A format is posted in the resources for preparing your Case Study Proposal.
If you face problem in preparing the proposal, please consult our, GA,
for
this course.
2. Each Team is needed to show their weekly progress on the case study to the GA on
Monday from 3:00 to 4:00 PM in Room # 644. GA will provide necessary explanation and
support to the students for completing the work. GA will record attendance of the teams in
each week. If a team fails to show progress in any week without prior information and
valid reason, 1% points will be penalized.
