New Features in PSIM Version 9.3

Highlights of key new features in PSIM Version 9.3 are:

New Motor Control Design Suite

Improved HEV Design Suite

New F2803x Target for support of TI F2803x series fixed-point DSP

Support of TI Digital Motor Control Library

MTPA and Field Weakening control blocks for induction motor and nonlinear
PMSM

EMI standards in Simview

Description of key new features in Version 9.3, as compared to Version 9.2, is given below.

Motor Control Design Suite

The all new Motor Control Design Suite provides the total solution for motor drive system design.
From system specifications, the Motor Control Design Suite automatically designs all the
controllers with proper stability margins, and generates a complete system that is operational and
ready to simulate.
Three design templates are provided in the Motor Control Design Suite: linear and nonlinear
PMSM drive with maximum-torque-per-ampere control and field weakening control, and induction
motor drive with vector control and field weakening control.
The figure below on the left show the Design Suite interface of a nonlinear PMSM drive system,
and the figure on the right shows the complete system schematic.

In addition, using the auto code generation capability in PSIM, one can generate the control code
automatically for DSP implementation, making it possible to go from design to implementation and
hardware implementation in one easy step.

HEV Design Suite

Previously, the HEV Design Suite supports only linear PMSM. In this release, the Design Suite
also support nonlinear PMSM. In a nonlinear PMSM, inductances and back EMF constant are a
function of the motor current. Designing controllers HEV powertrain systems using nonlinear
PMSM is a very challenging task, and such task is made considerably easier with the HEV Design
Suite.
The figures below show the Design Suite interface of series/parallel HEV and Plug-in HEV
(PHEV) powertrain systems with nonlinear PMSM.

F2803x Hardware Target

Through the new F2803x Hardware Target, PSIM now supports TI F2803x series fixed-point DSP.
Basic DSP functional blocks are provided, including PWM generators, A/D converter, digital input
and output, encoder, capture, etc. A list of the F2803x Target library elements is shows below:

These elements can be used in regular simulation as well as automatic code generation. The
generated code is ready to run on the target DSP.
In fixed-point calculation, the selection of fixed-point positions is an important issue. If the fixedpoint range is too low, the variable value may overflow. But if the fixed-point range is too high, the
calculation resolution will suffer. To address this problem, PSIM provides the function to check the
fixed-point range based on simulation results, and give indication if a particular output is close to
overflow or already overflow, or is too conservative in the fixed-point position setting.
For example, the figure below shows the range check result of a circuit. It indicates that some
variables are close to overflow (highlighted in yellow), and some already overflow (highlighted in
red).

TI Digital Motor Control Library

TI provides the Digital Motor Control (DMC) Library to facilitate the coding for digital power and
motor drive applications. This library is now supported in PSIM. The figure below shows a list of
the TI DMC Library elements.

These elements can be used in regular simulation. Moreover, when they are used for code
generation, TI's code will be used directly in the generated code, further increasing the code
efficiency.

Other New Features/Improvements

Motor Control Blocks for Induction Machine and Nonlinear PMSM

A Maximum-Torque-Per-Ampere (MTPA) control block and a Field Weakening control are
provided for nonlinear PMSM. These blocks automatically calculate the references for Id and
Iq current loops in constant-torque and constant-power operation.
In addition, a Field Weakening control block is provided for induction machines. Based on the
dc bus voltage and stator frequency, this block will calculate the reference for the Id current
loop in field weakening operation.
These control blocks make it very easy to set up the control of a motor drive system.

Subsystem Code Generation

PSIM offers the capability to generate fixed-point/floating-point code for a subsystem. One can
then copy and paste this code into one's own code for hardware implementation. This is useful
if one already has the hardware code written but wishes to update the control code. The control
algorithm can be validated and the code generated automatically in PSIM. This allows one to
combine hand written code with auto generated code from PSIM.

EMI Standards in Simview

Commonly used EMI standards, such as FCC Class A and B, CISPR 25, and Mil-Std 461, can
be plotted and superimposed on existing Simview plots to show if existing harmonic spectrum
meets or exceeds EMI standards. An example of the EMI standard plots is shown below:

In this example, FCC Class A and B standards are plotted. This makes it very easy for EMI
result analysis to examine at what frequencies the standards are not met.

Elements for Code Generation

The following elements are now supported for auto code generation: maximum/minimum
block, space vector PWM block, round-off block, digital PI controller, digital 1st-order lowpass filter, and Design Suite control blocks.
