SPRING 2015

8 South Bay Close

REPULSE BAY, HONG KONG

We have seen the Lord! (John 20:25)

It is no surprise that those who saw Jesus alive on that first Easter were excited to tell others. Even more than just
having witnessed a miracle, they were excited that their friend, Jesus, was alive. They were excited because his life
transformed their own lives and gave them hope. The people who heard their words also experienced lives
transformed by hope.
We at Church of All Nations have heard the good news that Jesus is risen! We have seen him come to us in word and
in sacrament. And our lives have been transformed by hope. The resurrection of Jesus is more than just a story, it
is a life giving event. Through the Word we share with each other, we can truly say by faith that We have seen the
Lord! And we can be excited to tell others- both within our church family and those who have not yet heard.
During this time of Easter, we get to hear the words and share the stories from scripture that Jesus is risen. I pray
this season of faith and hope will continue into our life as a church family. May we respond to the Easter story
through worship, discovery, and service. May we care for each other in prayer and fellowship. Read this newsletter
with faith and hope- celebrating the things that have taken place at Church of All Nations in the past months and
looking forward to the events that coming up. May the faith and hope that drives this church family transform all
our lives to be excited to tell others that Jesus is alive!
30Now

Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in

this book;

31but

these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of

God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31)

Voters Meeting Spring 2015

On 22 March, 2015, the semi-annual voters meeting
considered two important topics. The first was the
annual budget. As the current giving has been below
expected levels, the council has been concerned about
a shortfall in the 2015/16 budget year. Therefore,
after some discussion, the following budget proposal
was passed:

Including the newly elected members, CAN Officers

and Board members are:

1) target provisional budget of roughly 2.7 million

HKD (see church office for detailed budget), and

Congregation Financial Secretary: Karen Rohrs

2) initiate special congregational fund-raising in April

and May to raise an additional 600,000 HKD above
current giving).
3) the voters authorize CAN Council to adjust the final
2015-2016 budget in light of the additional funding
raised in April and May 2015.
(If a downward adjustment is needed, Council will
consider adjustments to staffing numbers, salary and
medical insurance for staff, and accruals.)
Secondly, the voters elected new officers and board
members.

Vice president: Diana Ibarra

Congregation Secretary: Tami Burdan
Congregation Treasurer: Sherri Runge

Board of Trustees: David Dickhudt

Board of Education: Carl Hanson
Board of Stewardship: Vincent Li; Thom Garetson;
Paul Strecker
Board of Elders: Mary Garetson; Russ Daniels; Greg
Harre
Board of Outreach: Amy Temple; Tara Temple; Stan

Intercessory Prayers
"You do not have because you do not ask God" (James 4:2b).
"He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor" (Isaiah 59:16).
"No one calls on Your name or strive to lay hold of You" (Isaiah 64:7).
The three Bible verses above are reminders of the lack of prayer in the lives of the Body of Christ, his believers.
Man first called on God is recorded in Genesis 4:25-26, "....then man began to call upon the name of the LORD."
Prayer is communicating with God, listening and talking to Him. Andrew Murray, a South African pastor and
missionary in the late 1800's once said, "Christ meant prayer to be the great power by which His church should do
its work, and the neglect of prayer is the reason the church lacks greater power."
During His time on earth, Jesus stayed close to the Father and sought His will through prayers. If Jesus had made
prayer His priority, then how could we, His followers, choose to do less and expect much? One must be humbled to
pray because it is his/her acknowledgement of God's absolute power and sovereignty and his/her total dependency
on Him. Like any parent, God the Father treasures our time and communication with him. Revelations 5:8b states,
"...each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which is the prayers of the saints."
Finally, "Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests....Be joyful always, pray
continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 6:18a and I
Thessalonians 5:16-18). May the Church of All Nations be known as the House of Prayer for the Nations to the glory
of God!

Let God Shine Through You!

"...for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord;
walk as children of light...."
Ephesians 5:8 (Revised Standard Version)

As we move through Spring, are you growing in a fuller experience and understanding
of the Joy you discovered at Christmas?
God shines the light of his love for us in his son Jesus;
God shows us each that light of love in wonderfully different ways;
In joyful thanks we can let God's light shine through us, using the many gifts he has first
given us--including our talents, time and resources.
With God's blessings, we each have unique opportunities to let God shine through our lives
into the lives of others.
CAN thanks God and our church family worldwide for the talents, time and resources that
enable us to share and spread the good news of God's great love.
This Spring, please consider prayerfully and deliberately:
- How am I growing each day in the light of God's love?
- What am I doing personally and as part of God's family to let God's love
shine through me?
Please join with us as God blesses CAN with minds to understand needs, hearts to care, and
hands to give.
To find out more about opportunities for growth, sharing and giving, please contact any of us
listed below, or call Pastor Joel, Megan Birney, or Nic Cass at 2812-0375.

WHAT BETTER WAY TO SPEND A FRIDAY NIGHT THAN AT CHURCH
WATCHING A SUPER FUN MOVIE?
On March 13th we turned the sanctuary at Church of All Nations
into a movie theatre. Some of the chairs were moved back and a
few couches and very large beanbag cushions were brought in and
we screened Night at the Museum on both screens. The church
provided popcorn and drinks and each
person who came brought a yummy
treat to share at our very own Snack
Bar. About half way through the movie we held an intermission and a
trivia contest. The kids were very excited to answer the trivia questions
and collect their prizes. Pastor Joel had some pretty tough questions; I

believe there were one or two that even stumped the adults!
Be on the lookout for our next Movie Night featuring Star Wars.

Lent is such a special time, a time to slow down and

reflect on whats really happening as we head
toward Easter. What is the story? Through the
season of Lent Pastor Joel has been leading a
Wednesday night Lenten Service sharing the story,
complete with crafts, followed by a time of
fellowship. I heard someone say that it is the picture
of loaves and fishes, which it most certainly is as the sign up sheets are always blank. Each week we
have been blessed with (at least) five amazing soups to choose from, soft bread and rolls, tasty treats
for dessert and the greatest sharing time available.

The 16th Annual Christian Women's Conference

On Saturday, March 14th, at HKIS High School Campus, the 16th
Annual CWC was held with about 140 women in attendance.
Christian Women's Conference-HK is an interdenominational
ministry with the desire to unite Christian women from all walks of
life in Hong Kong and China for one day of worship through
praising, teaching, digging deep in God's Word, listening, and
fellowshipping. A few women from CAN participated this year as
worship leader, singers, workshop presenter, and participants.
This year's theme was ONE THING based on Luke 10:41-42 where
Jesus said to Martha, "You are worried and distracted by many
things; there is need of only one thing..." Joanna Weaver, an awardwinning author and conference speaker served as the keynote speaker. Her messages focused on "Jesus: the One
Thing" and "The One-Thing Life: A Life with Jesus as its Center." In addition to the keynote, there were seven
workshops prepared by leaders from seven different churches in Hong Kong. Christian vendors and ministries
were also present as parts of this wonderful day. Every woman walked away feeling blessed, challenged, and
encouraged to keep living out her faith in Christ in her home, church, work place, and community.

Sherri and Megan are thankful for the opportunity to
celebrate the ministry of the LCHKS schools by joining
the SLS students and teachers as they shared their gifts
and the love of Christ with students in Macau.

On Friday, March 20, 2015, five teachers, 21 students

and the school chaplain from Savior Lutheran School
(SLS) along with Church of All Nations members Sherri
Runge and Megan Kincaid joined Deaconess Carol Halter
on a day trip to Macau, where the SLS students had the
opportunity to perform at Concordia School for Special
Education (CSSE) and visit historical sites around
Macau.
The Church of All Nations Social Ministry Board
provided the funding for the day trip. For nearly half of
the students on the trip, this was their first visit to
Macau, and it was the international acting debut for all!
The SLS students joined all 150 CSSE students in a time
of singing and prayer. After the younger CSSE students
went back to class, the SLS students performed a series
of three dramas for the CSSE students on the
importance of properly disposing of medicines, caring
for people with autism and environmental protection.
Both the SLS and the CSSE students thoroughly
enjoyed the time together, as laughter and cheering
abounded.
Pastor Yung, SLS Chaplain, tied all of the dramas back
to the great command to love God and love our
neighbors and thanked Church of All Nations for their
continued support of the ministry at SLS. Deaconess
Carol Halter also shared the Gospel message and gave
all of the CSSE students Gospel color bracelets and
crosses.
The time with the CSSE students finished with a
presentation of artwork made by SLS students to
CSSE. CSSE Principal Grace Lam thanked the SLS
students and gave a small gift to every member of the
Hong Kong group.

Crossroads 2015

A team of 12 from Church of

All Nations volunteered for a
day of service at Crossroads.
It was wonderful working
together as a team for the
benefit of others.
On Saturday our team from
Church of All Nations worked
on sorting incoming
donations and kept up
with the deliveries of
donated goods through out
the day. We worked where
there was a need and when
given a task. We relied on
volunteers from Crossroads
to give us guidance and
direction.
Not only did we work
efficiently as a team, we also
donated school supply kits
for needy children and we
presented Crossroads with a
contribution to cover the cost
of shipment of a container.

Much was accomplished on Saturday at

Crossroads!

Church of All Nations generously continues its support for the education of young women from
disadvantaged backgrounds to complete their high school education in mainland China. Concordia
Welfare and Education Foundation wishes to share a huge THANK YOU for the support of all three years
of education for 10 young women starting year 1 studies this year. In addition to the support of these
young women through this years Angel Tree giving, four CAN families are supporting ongoing
scholarship pledges for young women that they have sponsored from their first year of education 3
years ago and who will graduate this current academic year. If that werent enough, an additional
corporate giving grant was designated to support both the scholarship program for another 19 young
women in Yunnan and Guangdong Provinces as well as career and graduates workshops for all of the
year 3 scholarship recipients in Guangdong Province! These workshops will equip them for success in
navigating the education and career options after high school graduation. Thank you for commitment
to these women who would otherwise be marginalized from accessing secondary education! These
young women are truly impacted by participation in this program, including the hope that they receive
from your support. They can make a difference in the future in their home communities! Take some
time to get to know your scholarship students. The following are excerpts from thank you and
introduction letters that they wrote.

GOU, 14 QZYY98
My parents income mainly comes from planting, I also have a sister, who is an
elementary student and she is going to step into the palace of middle school I want
to use my excellent grades to demonstrate appreciate towards the people who helped
me, its like the phrase The favor of a drop of water has been rewarded with the
gratitude of a fountain of water. I like to raise my hand to answer questions in class
and to discuss problems with my classmates. For those discussions help me to widen
my vision and to gain more experience. In daily life, Im gentle, active, imaginative and
sympathetic my plan for my senior high school living is to try my best to enter Wuhan University. This is my dream
and I will make it come true. I would like to thank the kind people who sponsored me. I really appreciate you for
sponsoring me.

LI, 14QZYY97
My family name is Li. I was born in a village. My family members are my grandparents,
dad, mom, and a younger sister. My mom mainly works to plant corn, and my dad
works day jobs in a neighbouring vicinity. Everyone in my family lives in harmony with
one another In terms of school, since I just entered high school, I am very passionate
and excited about learning. Just having recently started, I have very unexplainable and
curious feelings towards my new beginning at high school. I have very high hopes that I
will work very diligently for the next three years of high school so that when I finish I
will not leave with any regrets I feel that each day is very productive and meaningful, but the only thing that brings me
trouble is geography class. It gives me a headache, but I really want to understand that class. I hope that I can get into
my ideal university, and this is the only dream that I have. Lastly, I hope that you can live happily every day, live
meaningfully, and I want to sincerely give you my most genuine thank you!

WEN, 14QZYY96
My family consists of five people, including a pair of loving parents, a mischievous little
brother, my cheerful little sister and talkative me. I entered high school as a Year One
student this year. Prior to entering high school, I was very enthusiastic. I heard from
upperclassmen that high school is dull, full of hardships and very busy every day. At
first, I still couldn't believe that I'm already a high school student, but after living the life
of a high school student for a while, I understand that life is not easy. In my daily life, I
love playing badminton, reading, or chatting with my parents about the problems at
school. In terms of school, I would create a learning plan to help me study better. Even
though sometimes my schedule becomes too tight and my work for some subjects may be done a bit late during the
day, I always manage to finish them in time. Because I love talking and interacting, I particularly like English and Language
Arts. During the past few months in high school, I realized that it's very tough. Every day we have tons of homework,
but I'll never give up, because I have to be persistent to achieve my dreams.

MA, 14QZYY95
Hello! I have many different hobbies. I like to sing, write poems, write lyrics, read
comics, and take care of pets, etc. Filled with an unlimited amount of high hopes, I
found a new environment where I belong and grow. It is far away from home, and my
parents are no longer by my side to accompany me and remind me what to do.
Occasionally, I would feel lonely, but I will never give up on this path. If you ask why I
need an education, then the simplest reason is because it is so that my life later on will
be better. I hope that I can use my hard work and diligence to create a better life, and
be able to help more children who are suffering, so that they can become like me and swim happily and freely in this big
ocean of life. My parents grew up as children from the village, and their educational level isnt much. They face a lot of
difficulties and bear a lot of burdens in life, but they have never given up on my education. Maybe because of me, my
parents are already exhausted to a point beyond words, but I have never heard them complain before. My parents are
always so hardworking, fighting for a better life, no matter what. For my sake, my dad once slept on a grassy field in a
cool autumn night, and I cannot imagine how cold it must have been during that night. Whenever I think of how tired
my dad must be, I cant hold back my tears. I want to point out that this doesnt mean Im weak, but that this energy is a
sorrow that comes from a very deep love. Maybe I am not very perfect, but I will try my best, and I hope that I can help
more people with your help in my life. In terms of my dreams, I hope that I can become like you one day and help more
and more people.

CHEN, 14QZYY94
I just began my busy life as a high school student, but I am very fortunate that once I
began, I adjusted really quickly to the environment and I like my teachers in each class.
Although there are unavoidable problems that will keep coming up in my studies, I am
not worried since teachers and classmates are alongside me to help me solve the
problems. During this past summer, my parents decided to let me achieve my dreams of
becoming an artist, and allowed me to prosper in this area. Maybe its because of my
love for art that many people often think I am a loner. But I would tell them that I am
not lonely because I have art to accompany me. However, once high school started, I could only afford to take time out
of weekends to practice drawing, and then rush to go back to school in the evenings. Even though its very tiring, I know
that my hard work will pay off itself in the future. I want to be able to get into the University of Arts in my dreams, I will
change my lazy habits to raise up my grades in order to get into my dream school.

JIANG, 14QZYY93
Recently, Ive been paying more attention in class. However, although Im focused, I still
have problems with my physics class. My teacher helped me with the class afterward,
and now I understand it more. I just started high school, and I will treasure these three
years in high school to study hard and get into a good college. My familys main source
of income is farming. In school, I like to play sports when theres free time, especially
basketball. Thank you for helping me. I will study harder and harder and I wont let you
down. I will try my best, and get into a very good college. Then I will go after my
dreams. I want to say thank you again sincerely.

WU, 14QZYY91
There are four people in my family: Dad, Mom, my older sister, and myself. My dad has a
middle school educational level, and my mom only has an elementary school
educational level. The main source of income for our family is through farming, and my
parents dont have a stable source of income. My older sister also just started
university this year, and although my parents fully support this idea of university, they
are financially incapable of providing for her tuition. The burden became even greater
since I passed my exams to enter high school. Sometimes I think that Ive added on to
my parents burden, and I feel troubled and confused as to whether Im fighting for my future dreams, or whether Im
adding on to my parents pressure. These thoughts make me lose direction, and sometimes it even makes me want to
give up on education. It makes me lose focus in life and feel burdened that I often get distracted with these thoughts
during class time. But, I do want to work hard for my future, so I will use my diligence now to pay my parents back in
the future.

ZHANG, 14QZYY92
My familys main source of income is farming, and we plant tobacco, corn, etc. My
parents are farmer and the annual income is not high. They also need to make enough
to pay for my brothers and my education. Tuition isnt inexpensive, and it adds on to
our living expenses. Nevertheless, my parents still dont give up as long as it can put my
brother and me in school. When I got my test results, I was very happy to find out that
I was admitted into school! But I was very worried about tuition. Fortunately, after
getting in, I found out from my school that there is money available to solve some of
my problems. I want to appreciate you for your concern for me. Ill study as hard as possible, and wont disappoint my
family and you who care so much about me. My dream is to be a musician and actor. I like a lot of sports like
basketball, running, long jump, and jump-roping. I love the subjects of language and math. There are five members in my
family: my parents, my brother and sister, and myself. My familys annual income isnt high, and our expenses arent low. I
plan to use at most ten kuai at school each day. I want to appreciate people who love me by studying hard.

HE, 14QZYY9
My family situation is special in others eyes, but I dont think so. My mother is away
from my family and it is my father who shoulders all the familys burden at home. I have
a sister who is working in other city and she seldom comes back home. My mother is a
teacher, she teaches grade six students. My grandparents are fine so far.Years ago I was
still a young kid, now I am a student in senior high school. My study has been very
heavy and I am having less and less play time for myself. I have passion for life, I am not
naive any more as before. I have become more mature now and full of desires for many
things in life. We have just had our first monthly examination, when I looked at my bad
result, I had this silly idea that I should quit study and go to work with my father in the farm. My tears kept falling down
from my eyes and I was in a state of self-pity. It is my class teacher who has encouraged me and supported me till now.
She is very kind and is a strong lady. I have become very optimistic and strong in my mind because of her. I have used
the simplest words to thank you, and these words convey my sincere thanks. I understand even with a thousand thanks
and it remains the same thank you which I would like to say to you. Thank you for your donation to me indeed.

There are five people in my family: my dad, my mom, my two brothers and myself. The
main source of income for my family is farming. Both my parents are farmers, and my
other two brothers are uneducated now. The older brother helps my parents with
farming, and my younger brother has a part-time job outside. After I started high
school, it has changed my school life drastically. I have more homework and less free
time, and all of my time seems to be used up for something related to school. I actually
think this kind of lifestyle is very exhausting, but life is always like that. No pain, no gain.
During P.E. class, I would listen and follow all of the teachers instructions. Although I have a lot of hobbies, I particularly
like to play badminton, draw, dance, and sing. I think my life is a lot more colourful because of my hobbies, but these
things have now become a mere memory. I have to spend more time on schoolwork now. I believe that my success in
my schoolwork will make my dreams come true.
