HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.

0
This file contains the latest information on HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0. Check this file for any last-minute
notes not included in the HTRI Xchanger Suite Online Help.
General
HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 is an integrated set of components for designing and rating different types of
heat transfer equipment. The suite consists of a Microsoft Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI) and
a set of calculation modules for shell-and-tube exchangers (Xist), hairpin exchangers (Xhpe), jacketed
pipe exchangers (Xjpe), air-cooled exchangers (Xace), economizers (Xace), fired heaters (Xfh),
plate heat exchangers (Xphe), spiral heat exchangers (Xspe), rigorous tube layout (Xtlo), a rigorous
vibration analysis of a single tube (Xvib), and heat exchanger selection. Additional calculation modules
will be available in the future.
Internal Microfins
Subsequent to the release of the beta version of Xchanger Suite 5.0, we disabled the option for internal
micro-fins with two-phase fluids. Beta testing revealed significant differences in the results predicted using
Xchanger Suite 5.0 and EHT 2.1. The internal micro-fin methods are based on those in EHT 2.1.
Xchanger Suite 5.0 predicts the same enhancement factor (enhanced/plain) as EHT, but the underlying
plain tube two-phase methods differ significantly in some cases. We are working to resolve these
discrepancies. You may still elect to use micro-fins with single-phase fluids; Xchanger Suite predictions
agree closely with the EHT results.
Security Device Update
HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 requires an update to the HTRI security device. The installation program
automatically updates the TimeHASP or NetHASP security device attached to the PC. To update a local
NetHASP or TimeHASP separately, run the HXS5HASPUpdater program from the root directory of the
HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 installation CD.
Shared Network Client Installation
After the software is installed for a shared network, the shared network clients must run Setup in the
Client directory. Note that the client will not be allowed to choose the HTRI Xchanger Suite components to
install. Those installed in the shared network installation will be automatically selected. Note that Windows
98 and ME require installation of the shared network client from a mapped drive for the online help to
work properly.
Online Help
If you do not have write permission to the application directory (by default, C:\HTRI\XchangerSuite5), the
help files do not function correctly. Typically, this problem occurs with shared network installations.
The first time you access the online help, Windows attempts to create an index file in the application
directory. If you do not have write permission, this operation fails.
If you encounter this problem, have someone with write permissions to the application directory run the
Xchanger Suite help files (either by selecting an item from the Help menu within Xchanger Suite or by
double-clicking the HXS05.hlp file). After the index files are created, you can access the help files without
difficulty.
Installation/Uninstall on Windows 2000/XP Requires Administrative Privilege
If you attempt to install with Power User privileges, the installation will fail. If you attempt to uninstall with
Power User privileges, the operation partially fails, deleting key files so that program cannot be
uninstalled except manually. See the HTRI Xchanger Suite FAQs in the main HTRI Xchanger Suite help.
Print Cancel Crash

On some operating systems, canceling a print from the Formula One cancel box will crash the system.
The problem lies with Formula One and not HTRI Xchanger Suite. If you encounter this problem, save the
case before printing and do not cancel print jobs from the Formula One dialog box.
Print Preview Does Not Work for Multiple Cases
You cannot request a print preview for more than one case at a time.
NetHASP Users
If you use a NetHASP security device and a local printer, extraneous characters can appear in your
printer while you are running HTRI Xchanger Suite. If this situation occurs, select Choose NetHASP
device from the HTRI menu item in Start | Programs. If you subsequently connect a local TimeHASP
security device, select Choose TimeHASP device from the HTRI menu item in Start | Programs. Local or
network security devices work with either setting; the only difference is the order in which the program
checks for the devices.
Windows XP Users
HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 runs on all versions of Windows XP.
Windows 2000 Users
HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 runs on all versions of Windows 2000.
Windows NT Users
Microsoft no longer supports Windows NT. If HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 does not function properly under
Windows NT, HTRI will not be able to provide assistance in debugging the problems.
Windows 98/Me Users
HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 runs on all versions of Windows 98/Me.
Windows 95 Users
Microsoft no longer supports Windows 95. If HTRI Xchanger Suite 5.0 does not function properly under
Windows 95, HTRI will not be able to provide assistance in debugging the problems.
File Installation Log
A text file "HXSFileset.bin" (stored in the HTRI Xchanger Suite folder) lists all files installed on your
computer system.
System Registry Correction
The HTRI shared folder contains a batch file named "FixRegistry.bat". This batch file registers all the selfregistering files distributed with HTRI software. Note that the installation program automatically handles
the registration of the filesthis batch file is intended for remedial purposes only if the installation
program fails or the system becomes corrupt during operation.
