REVISION 3 (DIFFERENTIATION)

1. Sand is poured onto a horizontal floor at a rate of 30 cm3s-1 and forms a pile in the shape
of a right circular cone, the height of which is half the radius. Calculate the rate of change of
the radius when the radius is 10 cm.
2. The length of a rectangle is four times its width. If its area is increasing a rate of 30 cm2s-1,
find the rate of change of its perimeter at the instant when its width is 8 cm.
3. Each of the surfaces of a cube is expanding at a rate of 10 cm2s-1. Find the rate of change of
the volume of the cube when the surface area is 150 cm2.
4. An inverted right circular cone has a base radius of 3 m and a height of 9 m. The cone is full
of water. If water is leaking from the bottom at the rate of 2 m3min-1, find the rate of fall of
the water level when the water level is 6 m high.
5. Find the minimum value of x 2 xy y 2 if x and y are connected by the relation 2 x y 1.
6. A piece of wire of length 16 cm is cut into two pieces, one of length x cm and the other of
length (16 x) cm. The piece of length x cm is bent to form a circle with circumference x
cm. The other piece is bent to form a square with perimeter (16 x) cm. Show that, as x
varies, the sum of the areas enclosed by these two pieces of wire is a minimum when the
radius of the circle is

8
cm.

7. A closed container, made of thin metal, is in the shape of a cylinder with a hemispherical cap
at one end. Find the minimum area of metal required if the container is to hold a volume of
360 cm3.
8. A rectangle is inscribed in a semicircle with a fixed radius R as shown. Two vertices of the
rectangle lie on the arc of the semicircle while the other two lie on the diameter of the
semicircle. Find the greatest area of the rectangle that can be inscribed.

10. The surface area of a sphere of radius r meters is decreasing at a rate of 0.4 m 2 s 1 at an
instant when r 0.25 .
(a) Calculate the rate of decrease, at this instant, of the radius of the sphere.
(b) Show that, during a short time t seconds immediately after this instant, the volume will
decrease by approximately 0.05t m 3 .
