Report to accompany the alignment proposal for the work of Construction of high level

bridge Bridge across river Thondiyaru at Km 5/4 of Alagramam-Thenputhur road

branching at @Km 21/0 of Vellimedupet- Mailam road of villupuram district.
Proposal cost :Rs.789 lakhs
Name of work: Construction of high level bridge Bridge across river Thondiyaru at Km 5/4
of Alagramam-Thenputhur road branching at @Km 21/6 of Vellimedupet- Mailam of
villupuram district.
Scheme: This work has been proposed for Rs.789 lakhs under Chief Minister Announcement
works no 234. and the necessary proposals has been forwarded and awaiting for
Administrative sanction.
Location of the Proposed Bridge: The proposed Bridge site is located across thondiyaru
river at Km 5/4 of Alagramam-Thenputhur(ODR) road branching at @Km 21/6 of
Vellimedupet- Mailam road (MDR739) of Villupuram district.
Existing Details: In the proposed location, there is a bed level causeway with 900mm dia
pipe of two rows as summer vent. The length of bed level causeway is 55 m.
Necessity: At present there is a bed level causeway with summer vent. Across this river there
is an high level bridge of length 90m with 4 spans of 22.5 m each exists on upstreamside at
Km 3/4 of rettanai road(ODR) branching at @Km 16/8 of Vellimedupet- Mailam road
(MDR739) and there is an high level Bridge at Km 139/1-2 of NH45 with 5 spans of 20 m c/c
exists on Downstream side of this location. During flood season, on public enquiry it has
been inferred that the river water raised up to 1.50m above the existing road level of the
causeway which results traffic interruption for 5 to 10 days, This road caters villages viz.,
Perampattu, alagramam, Puthur etc.,. Due to the interruption of the traffic the public using
this road are experiencing much hardship and they expressed the importance of the High level
Bridge in this location. This road is mainly used to transport their agricultural products to
marketing centers. The existing bed level causeway is very weak and is insufficient to cater
the present day traffic requirements. Hence it is proposed to construct the High level bridge to
suit the present requirements.
Alignment No. 1 (marked in Yellow colour)
This Alignment starts at Km 5/015.76 (CH 0) of alagramam-thenputhur road(ODR) and
takes a left hand circular cum transition curve (C1) at ch 100.20 and ends at ch 200.70 with
deviation angle of 252656 and radius of 170 m, from there the alignment is straight and
crosses the river at an skew angle of angle of 144442at Ch 324.780 at an offset distance of
0.45m on D/S from the existing centerline of the road with the proposed linear water way of
60 m, and it takes a left hand circular cum transition curve (C2) at Ch 375.16 and ends at Ch
491.56 with deviation angle of 33018 and radius of 150 m
then the alignment is
straight, up to Ch 580.76 from their it takes left hand circular cum transition curve (C3)
which ends at Ch 722.60 with deviation angle of 611378 and radius of 100 m and finally
the alignment ends at ch 733.16( Km 5/757)of alagramam-Thenputhur road.

MERITS:
1

The linear water way of this alignment runs straight almost on the centre line of the
existing road

In this alignment curves proposed are of larger radius which results in clear visibility
and comfort riding.

Skew angle is less

DEMERITS:
1

Approaches length of this alignment is very large and runs through agricultural
land.

Land acquisition required is very large when compared to other two alignments.

Diversion road formation is needed in prior to the construction of HLB either on

upstream side or downstream side.

Agriculture will get affected

Number of curves is more when compared to alignment no.3

Alignment No. 2 (marked in green colour)

This Alignment starts at Km 5/217.42 (CH 0) of alagramam-thenputhur road(ODR) and
takes a left hand circular cum transition curve (C1) at ch 87.52 and ends at ch 203.49 with
deviation angle of 325027 and radius of 150 m, and crosses the river at an skew angle of
angle of 145854at Ch 128.20 with the proposed linear water way of 60 m, from ch
203.49 the alignment is straight and it takes a left hand circular curve (C2) at Ch 261.11 and
ends at Ch 282.08 with deviation angle of 200154 and radius of 60 m then the alignment
is straight, up to Ch 299.96 from their it takes right hand circular curve (C3) which ends at
Ch 323.90 with deviation angle of 225144 and radius of 60 m and finally the alignment
ends at ch 326.10( Km 5/544.08)of alagramam-Thenputhur road.

MERITS
This alignment runs along the existing road itself
This alignment requires minimum land acquisition.
Approach length is very less when compared to alignment 1.
DEMERITS

1 Diversion road formation is needed in prior to the construction of HLB either on

upstream side or downstream side of the existing causeway.
2 Linear waterway of this alignment is in curve portion

3 Curves introduced at very short intervals when compared to other alignments which
affects riding comfort.

Alignment No. 3(marked in a Golden yellow colour)

This Alignment starts at Km 5/217.42 (CH 0) of alagramam -thenputhur road (ODR) and
takes a left hand circular cum transition curve (C1) at ch 13.17 and ends at ch 78.49 with
deviation angle of 132931 and radius of 150 m, from there the alignment is straight and
crosses the river at an skew angle of angle of 185344at Ch 131.82 at an offset distance of
11.84 m D/S on alagramam side and 15.99m D/S on thenputhur side from the existing
centerline of the road with the proposed linear water way of 60 m, and again it takes a left
hand circular cum transition curve (C2) at Ch 170.13 and the both the curve, alignment ends
at Ch 302.06 (KM 5/524.81)with deviation angle of 385610 and radius of 150 m.

CONCLUSION:
Considering all the merits, demerits of the three alignments, the alignment no-3 marked in
Golden yellow colour is recommended and submitted for alignment committee approval even
though alignment no-2 requires very less land acquisition, the linear waterway is in curve portion.
