In vitro fertilization or
IVF is a technological
advancement in the
medical arena in response to the alarming
rate of infertility in developed countries. The
concept was pioneered
by Patrick Steptoe and
Dr. Robert Edwards, a
Cambridge physiologist,
late in the 1960s and
about ten years later, the
first IVF baby was delivered in the UK.

How does it work

In simple terms, a doctor inserts sperm

into an egg with a microscope and a
needle very carefully and then that fertilized egg ends up going inside the
woman who can then naturally give
birth.

Is that safe?

Yes, its completely safe and does not

cause babies to be born with defects.

days before the embryo is then reinserted or implanted in the woman's

uterine cavity through a sort of plastic
tube.

How We Help

Angela and George

We help you by letting you know the

facts about IVF.

How does it really work?

were counselled by Dr. Whitman-Elia that

the advanced therapy of in-vitro fertilization
could still give them hope

The process of in vitro fertilization,

essentially, involves the use of a
laparoscope; a telescope, which can be
inserted into a woman's abdomen under anesthetic conditions, to remove
eggs from the woman's ovary at a period just before the time it would naturally be released (ovulated). The harvested egg is then mixed with the
washed and diluted male sperm in a
glass dish. If fertilization occurs between the egg and the sperm, the resultant embryo is allowed to develop in
the laboratory, usually for two to three

and lead to a live birth.

I was just worn out physically and emotionally. We had been through four years of treatment and although I
fully trusted Dr. Whitman-Elia, I didnt
know if I could go through another treatment
process.
Ten months later the couple was ready.
They confidently put their dreams in the
hands of Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia. The resulting in-vitro procedure was a
success and Angela gave birth to twins, a boy
Dylan and girl Lauren.
