Dear Friends,

much anger and bitterness because of what had

happened to me. I was experiencing the weight of
unforgiveness, and it was blocking my spiritual
progress and my relationship with God. When
the Holy Spirit confronted me about it, I had to
make a decisionto be bitter or better. I chose
better. I chose to forgive.
We all have to make a quality decision like
that at some point in our walk with God. By
quality decision, I mean that when we decide to
forgive, we know that its going to involve some
suffering in the flesh, but we are determined
to see it through. I encourage you to make that
quality decision right now. Then study what the
Word says about forgiveness and seek the Lord
for His specific direction for your life. He wants
to lead us all into a deep, intimate relationship
with Himself, but unless we are willing to forgive,
that intimacy will be blocked.
You may notice that its hard to really enjoy
the presence of God when youre bitter about
somethingeven if you feel justified in your
anger. It just seems like somethings not quite
right. And its notunforgiveness is blocking
the flow.
The Father has forgiven us so we can forgive
othersHe gives us mercy so we can be merciful.
So we cant very well receive from Him if we are
unwilling to give to others what Hes given to
us. And He has given us so much! Now heres
a question for you: If you owed someone $10
million and they said, Aw, forget itI forgive
you, would you turn around and make someone
else pay the $20 they owed you? Heres the
answer: Do yourself a favor Forgive!

God bless you,

JOYCE MEYER PHOTOGRAPHED BY DARIO ACOSTA

This month we are sharing about the power

and necessity of forgiveness. Forgiveness is
a vital part of our life for many reasons. If
you cant think of any other reason to forgive,
consider obedience to God. His Word tells
us to forgive, and thats enough reason by
itselfjust because God said so! The thing
is, its for our own good. Holding on to
unforgiveness hinders our faith. It becomes
like a weight in
our spirit, slowing
our progress in our
walk with the Lord.
Ugh! It blocks our
relationship with
Him! We should
ask ourselves, What is so unforgivable that
I would let it hinder my personal relationship
with God?
As we celebrate Mothers Day this month,
we might consider that not everyone has
warm, loving feelings when thinking of
their mother. The reality is that some may
have had a mom who really let them down,
or they grew up in an abusive home, or their
mom abandoned them. Others may have had
a wonderful mom, yet may not have treated
her with the love and respect she deserves
and need to forgive themselves to move
ahead in life.
In whatever area of unforgiveness you
may find yourself, you CAN forgive. Please
dont feel like Im belittling your pain. I
certainly understand that some things we
go through in life are extremely painful. I
endured physical, emotional and sexual
abuse in my childhood. That was extremely
painful for me. No doubt you have endured
things that may seem even worse. The point
is, I lived a lot of my Christian life with so

instead of our emotions

by Joyce Meyer

How do you respond when someone hurts your

feelings? Do you take hold of their offense and let it
rob you of your joy? Do your emotions run wild and
try to take control of your actions?

Oh, Jesus, Help Me!

Years ago when I was right in the middle of
teaching a series on forgiveness, someone said
something to me over the phone that kind of hurt
my feelings. I had all the same type of emotions that
most of us have when this kind of thing happens,
and I had to just start praying, God, help me, help
me, help me! Im right in the middle of teaching a
series on forgiveness, God. I cant teach them when
Im feeling mad! Its just not going to work for me to
try to teach when Im upset. Oh, Jesus, help me!
I decided to act right, but that didnt help the way I
felt inside because even when we choose to do whats
right, our feelings need time to catch up with our
decision. It might not happen right away. We cannot
lose our faith as soon as our feelings disagree with
what weve already done in faith. You and I need to
gain an understanding of our emotions.

Gods Path to Forgiveness

Luke 6 tells us what we should do when people
hurt us. One morning I was reading it out loud to
Dave and said, You know what? This has got to be
the hardest thing in the whole world to do. But we
dont get out of doing something just because its
hard to do.

I have done my part before God and now God will

do His part. My feelings will catch up with my decision.
In verses 27 and 28 of this passage it says, But I say to you who
are listening now to Me: [in order to heed, make it a practice to]
love your enemies, treat well (do good to, act nobly toward) those
who detest you and pursue you with hatred, invoke blessings upon
and pray for the happiness of those who curse you, implore Gods
blessing (favor) upon those who abuse you [who revile, reproach,
disparage, and high-handedly misuse you].
Can you believe that? Were to pray something like, Oh, Lord,
I pray that Youd just make them so happy! I still dont get
that, but Im willing to do it in obedience and say, Lord, I dont
know that I really want them to be happy, but Ill pray that in
faith anyway, because Youre telling me to bless them with Your
presence. (Could You throw a little conviction in too, please?)

Forgiveness in Action
Verse 35 instructs us to love [our] enemies and be kind and
do good [doing favors so that someone derives benefit from them]
and lend, expecting and hoping for nothing in return. Lets get
practical about how to do this. If we have a coworker who gets
the promotion that weve been believing God for, the minute we
start to feel jealousy and envy, we need to go buy them a gift. It
works! Im telling you, it will work! When we do it, it breaks the
power of the devil because Romans 12:21 says that we overcome

evil with good. Its absolutely true, too. I have

learned this principle and it has been lifechanging for me.
For example, a few years ago someone told
me about a person who was doing business
with our ministry and making a good deal of
money because of their relationship with us. My
friend happened to be at the same restaurant,
seated in the next booth and overheard their
conversation, which just happened to be about
me. And they werent saying good things about
me either.
As soon as I was told about it, I got so mad
and started saying things like, Im going to do
this and Im going to do that! Im going to tell
them tomorrow that they are never getting our
business again! And Im going to tell them that
we found out what they were saying about me
and blah, blah, blah.
In bed that night, my mind raced with all
the things I wanted to do in response. Then the
Holy Spirit said to me, Youre not going to do

Testimony
Terry S.
Lancaster, OH

Watching the Enjoying Everyday Life broadcast,

listening to teachings, and reading Joyces books
have not only changed my life, but have also saved
my life. For many, many years I was sexually abused
by my older brother. Due to this I always felt dirty. I
hid in a shell for over forty years. I suffered from
a horrible depression and self-hatred. But thanks
to Joyce Meyer Ministries, depression is no longer a
part of my life.
God, through Joyces teachings, did what years of
therapy couldnt do. Now Im free, praise the Lord!
I had seriously thought about suicide; I even tried
twice when I was younger. The abuse really ruined
my life, but now I can start living. I actually want to
see my family, friends and even my enemies. I have

forgiven all the people in my life who have hurt me.

I truly love them. Im not bitter anymore, the hatred
has left me, and Im happier than Ive been in years.
I feel more secure and I have found that I actually
love myself. I am finally at peace and Im free!
I feel I can now do my work that the Lord put me
here to do. I have always loved animalsgrowing
up they were my only friends. I have been caring for
abused and homeless animals for over thirty years.
Ive helped thousands of animals, and I have the
hope and faith that the Lord is going to show me
the way, even with financial strains.
I now have joy in my heart, patience and newfound life. I am so thankful for Joyce and the staff
at Joyce Meyer Ministries.

any of those things. He said, No, youre going to do what you

teach. Youre going to go buy them a present, and youre going
to tell them how much you appreciate the services that theyve
given you all these years.
Well, needless to say, because my emotions werent in
agreement with my obedience to the Holy Spirits instructions, I
sent someone else to buy the gifts. In my state of mind at the time,
I was still very tempted to buy them gift certificates from the
restaurant where they were overheard talking about me. I was
thinking, Maybe if I get them gift certificates from there, theyll
know that I know. Isnt that just like our flesh to think of these
things? I was honestly hoping that God would let me give them
a clue that I knew what they had done, so they would know how
good I was behaving by treating them well.
What I remember most about the situation is that as soon as
I started taking action to do something good for them, it just
got so funny to me. I was laughing out loud in my house, all by
myself. I was having my own private party because there is a
joy thats released in us when we have so much power in the
Holy Spirit that no matter what anyone else does to us, they
cant steal our joy.
Its true. When we can look at people whove hurt us, with
compassion, and pray what Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them
for they know not what they dotheres a party that goes on inside
of us. (See Luke 23:34.)
Probably 99.9 percent of the time its absolutely true that
people do not realize what they are doing. The person in the
restaurant who was talking about me had no idea what he was
doing and the position that he was putting himself in. Thats
why we need to pray for them and say, God forgive them. Moses
prayed for Miriam when she talked against him, because God
inflicted her with leprosy. Yet, he responded by praying for her
so she wouldnt die.
What does God say will happen to us when we obey His Word?
Luke 6:35 states, and then your recompense (your reward) will be
7

www.joycemeyer.org

Remember too, that one of the main

ingredients of forgiveness is for us to bless our
enemies and not curse them. Bless means to
speak well of them and curse means to speak
evil of them. One of the key reasons some
people dont ever work through the process of
forgiveness is that they wont shut their mouths.
They will not stop talking about it and want
to tell everyone they run into what so-and-so
did to them. Yet at the same time theyll also
say, Of course, Ive forgiven them. I have no
bitterness or resentment.
But, if we keep talking about it, it is still a
problem for us. We may have done the official
I forgive you. But we may not have made the
decision to forgive and we need to be honest
with God.

Love Covers
The Bible says that love covers a multitude of
sins. Do you know what that means? It means
that love will even have you making excuses for
your enemies. Someone might come up to us and
say, Well, I heard what so-and-so did to you.
We can choose to reply, You know, they didnt
understand what they were doing. Theyve just
got problems of their own.
When we really decide to forgive someone
and pray the prayer that blesses our enemies,
making the decision we will not talk bad about
them, but instead, cover their fault and their
mess, we still might not feel any different. The
devil will try to work through our feelings to
make us think that we havent really forgiven
them. When that happens, we need to say, I
have done my part before God and now God
will do His part. My feelings will catch up with
my decision.
I believe choosing forgiveness is one of
the most difficult things God asks us to do,
especially if we believe that whoever hurt us is
in the wrong and doesnt deserve to be forgiven.
But God instructs us to practice forgiveness and
that when we do, we can trust Him to deal with
whoever has hurt us and help us walk through
the steps of forgiveness. When we choose to
follow the path of forgiveness instead of our
emotions, we will experience the peace and joy
that come through obeying Gods Word.

PRAYER & PROMISE

57th Annual National Day of Prayer

Prayer! Americas Strength & Shield

by Brenda Barnes

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and

pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear
from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV

Prayer is not just a nifty idea. It provides the

foundation for living in a blessed land.
This year millions will answer the call to
prayer on May 1 to observe the 57th Annual

13

www.joycemeyer.org

National Day of Prayer, a yearly observance held on the first

Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation.
It was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States
Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.

E N J O Y I N G E V ER Y D A Y LI F E

Americans of many faiths and traditions share a common belief that God hears
the prayers of His children and shows grace to those who seek Him.
President George W. Bush

The theme for this year is Prayer! Americas Strength and

Shield and is based on the verse from Psalm 28:7, which states:
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and
I am helped(NIV).
The mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is
to communicate with every individual the need for personal
repentance and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to
intercede for America and its leadership in the seven centers of
power: Government, Military, Media, Business, Education, Church
and Family.1
As a premise for national prayer, and in accordance with
biblical truth, the National Day of Prayer Task Force seeks to:
Foster

unity within the Christian church

Americas constitutional freedoms to gather,
worship, pray and speak freely
Publicize and preserve Americas Christian heritage
Encourage and emphasize prayer, regardless of current
issues and positions
Respect all people, regardless of denomination or creed
Be wise stewards of Gods resources and provision
Glorify the Lord in word and deed 2
Protect

Our Christian heritage is continually under

attack and scrutiny. Now, more than ever
beforeand with the divine direction stated in 2
Chronicles 7:14we must join together in prayer
for our nation and its leaders. If we will pray, seek
the face of God and turn from wickedness, God
will forgive and bring healing to our land. This
should be the hearts desire of every Christian.
President George W. Bush stated it well in
his 2007 National Day of Prayer proclamation:
A prayerful spirit has always been an important
part of our national character, and it is a force that
has guided the American people, given us strength,
and sustained us in moments of joy and in times of
challenge. Americans of many faiths and traditions
share a common belief that God hears the prayers of
His children and shows grace to those who seek Him.
and we can find comfort in the grace and guidance
of a loving God.3
Make it your mission to participate in the
National Day of Prayer on May 1 in some form or
fashion. Locate a prayer group or an event in your
community, or simply set aside a special time on this
day to pray specifically for our leaders, our Christian
heritage and values, our homes and families.

To focus specifically upon the theme for

this years National Day of PrayerPrayer!
Americas Strength and Shieldremember the
many times God has empowered this nation
and shielded her in battle and dissension. Truly,
we can proclaim, The Lord is my strength and
shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped.
Without Him, we are lost.
It is time that as a nationa Christian nation
we take a stand for prayer as never before. We
should be praying for our leadersgovernment,
military, media, business, education, churches
and familiesevery day. In a collaborative
effort, to show the world that we mean business,
take your stand on the National Day of Prayer.
You wont be alone.

Pull a ten-dollar bill from your pocket, and you will see
the face of Alexander Hamilton on the front. By merit of his
accomplishments, Hamilton should be one of our greatest
national heroes. Consider his contributions to America:
Revolutionary War hero
George Washingtons chief of staff by age twenty-two
Americas first Secretary of the Treasury
Coauthor of The Federalist Papers
Creator of the Coast Guard
Designer of the nations banking and finance system
Architect of a system of tax collection to bring revenue
to the United States government
Builder of the infrastructure for an industrial economy
Yet, despite displaying the greatest blend of legal, political
and financial knowledge of the Founding Fathers, Hamilton
does not rank among the foremost heroes of our countrys
history. Why? Pride. Hamiltons self-importance and inability
to take an insult alienated those around him and sabotaged
his career. His ego literally killed him. Far too vain to patch up
differences with fellow politician Aaron Burr, Hamilton was
shot and killed by Burr in a duel at the age of forty-nine.

PrideA Leaders Greatest Problem

There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. Good
pride represents our dignity and self-respect. Bad pride is the
deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.
When you look at the word pride, notice the middle letter is
i. When you are full of pride on the inside, it makes you stiff,
stubborn, and creates strife with others.

The Problems of Pride

Pride Stops Us from Building a Team.

Prideful leaders readily contract Superman Syndrome
and devalue the benefits of teamwork. They rely on their own
prowess to solve problems and advance the organization.
Blinded by their self-centeredness, arrogant leaders are
unable to appreciate the strengths in others.
Pride Renders Us Unteachable.
Leaders who are assured they know everything dont
bother about personal growth. Their ego convinces them that
they have arrived, and they quit searching for lifes lessons in
the people and circumstances around them.
Pride Closes Our Mind to Feedback.
Pride deafens us to the advice or warnings of those around us.
As Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective
People, has said, It takes humility to seek feedback. It takes
wisdom to understand it, analyze it, and appropriately act on it.
Without humility, we care about only one opinionour own.
Pride Prevents Us from Admitting Mistakes.
The Duke of Wellington once haughtily drew himself up
to his full height and thundered to one of his staff officers,
God knows I have many faults, but being wrong is not one of
15

www.joycemeyer.org

them! Pride wont allow for failure. The egotistical

leader blames mistakes on others, justifies them as
inevitable, or refuses to acknowledge them.
Pride Keeps Us from Making Changes.
Pride will cause leaders to pledge allegiance to
the status quo rather than opening themselves to
change, especially if the change alters a system
they built. Since leaders have emotional equity in
their own work, they will justify living with broken
systems rather than changing them.
Pride Hinders Us from Reaching Our Potential.
For leaders to reach full potential, they must
be aware of areas in which they can improve.
Unfortunately, pride blocks honest self-assessment
and prevents leaders from finding the path to better
performance.
Pride Destroys Relationships.
The opposite of loving others is not hating
others but rather obsessing over oneself. When we
become self-absorbed, we cut ourselves off from the
enjoyment of the relationships in our life. What I
call The Celebration Principle says the true test of
relationships is not how loyal we are when friends
fail, but how thrilled we are when they succeed. If
we cant get excited about the accomplishments of
our friends, we had better do some soul-searching.

How to Correct the Pride Problem

Proverbs 11:2 says, When pride comes, then comes
disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom (NIV). C.S.
Lewis has said that the way to obtain humility is
to first realize that one is proud. Humility is the
complete opposite of pride. It is the demonstration of
our service to others and our true love for God.
After acknowledging that pride exists, becoming
a servant to others, expressing gratitude for what you
have, praying for guidance and correction, and learning
to laugh at yourself will correct a pride problem.
As you step into leadership roles, remember
Alexander Hamilton. You can have dozens of
accomplishments, but without humility and
gratitude, you will not be a truly successful leader.
Taking care of pride issues now will improve your
relationships and give you a God-given credibility
as a leader.

Joyce Ministers in
by Chad Trafton

Perched on the southern slopes of the Himalayas, Nepal is

perhaps best known for Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in
the world.
But this nation, roughly the size of Arkansas, is also known
for something else. Landlocked between China and India, Nepal
has been regarded for centuries as the Hindu Kingdom. And
for good reason. With a population of nearly 29 million, more
than 80 percent of Nepals inhabitants are Hindu.1
Conversely, less than 3 percent of those living in Nepal are
Christians.2 In fact, prior to 1960, Christians couldnt legally live
in Nepal, and it would be another thirty years before they would
receive any true measure of religious freedom. Reforms in 1990
proved to be a big step forward, although it was still officially
illegal for Christians to evangelize and convert others.
Persecution has been severe, with Christians being arrested,
imprisoned and even murdered for preaching to Hindus. But God
is bringing change. Throughout the last half century, Nepalese
Christians have shown a remarkable willingness to suffer for
their faith, and the church has actually flourished under pressure,
growing from 50,000 to more than 500,000 since 1985.3 And as
Nepal has inched closer to becoming a true democracy, people
are beginning to see things come to pass they only dreamed
about twenty years ago.
One such thing occurred this past January 13 when Dave
and Joyce held a public open-air festival in Kathmandu. This
unprecedented event was a first for everyone involved. This was
the first time Joyce Meyer Ministries had ever attempted to hold
an open meeting in Nepaland one of the first opportunities the
Nepalese had to attend such a large-scale Christian event.
On this Sunday afternoon, there was a sense that history was
being made as a truly energetic crowd of more than 13,000 came
to hear Joyce speak.
It was absolutely incredible. Very few people have
gone to Nepal to hold large meetings, so the people were
very excited, says David L. Meyer, CEO of Hand of Hope,
Joyce Meyer Ministries World Missions. At one time, Nepal
claimed to be the only true Hindu nation, but on this
Sunday, Jesus was proclaimed and many were saved!
Earlier that day Joyce had the chance to minister
to nearly 1,500 of the nations pastors and leaders at
a special leaders seminar. Like the public festival, it
was a great success.
Turnout for these events can largely be attributed
to our TV exposure throughout many parts of Nepal.
Joyces program has aired in Nepalese for years, building
a significant audience in an unlikely location.

In recent years the Lord has opened several

crucial doors for us in Nepal. Through the
support of our friends and partners, we have
been able to widely distribute two of Joyces
books translated into Nepalese. In addition, we
fully support an orphanagecaring for twentyfive childrenand support various feeding
programs throughout the country. In light of
the past, our current involvement in this nation
can only be seen as a monumental stride.
Its a new day in Nepal. Politically, its a
nation that seems to be waking up from history.
In 2006 an interim parliament declared Nepal a
secular state. Pushing toward democracy, their
parliament is currently planning to draft a new
constitution, and 2008 could be the year they
see their monarchy abolished for good.
Spiritually, the persistence of a few has begun
to pay off. Currently, a Christian church can be
found in every single one of Nepals seventy-five
districtsnothing less than exponential progress.
Here, amongst a staunch and influential caste
system including the Chhetri and BrahmanHillin the middle of the Hindu Kingdoma
crack of light is piercing the darkness.
John 1:5 says, The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it (NLT).
To many, the efforts of a remnant of Christians
in Nepal may seem insignificant. After all,
they only comprise less than 3 percent of the
population. And our groundbreaking efforts
in this nation? They may seem unimportant as
well. But we know something they dont
The message of Jesus Christ is alive and full of
power. It has the ability to change people, change
governments and change nations. When the Light
of Christ shines, great things begin to happen.
And when it shines in the darkness, that is
where it shines the brightest.

For the first time ever, Joyce ministers in Nepal. More than 13,000 showed up for
this milestone event.

ask joyce
Dear Joyce,

Kathy,

How do you balance the

importance of forgiveness
and letting God be our
vindicator with justice?

When we forgive as God has instructed us to do, it opens the door for Him to bring justice.
God makes it clear in His Word that He is our Vindicator and He will repay our enemies. It
is not our job, and we only cause trouble and torment for ourselves if we dont recognize
that. Actually, we are doing ourselves a favor when we forgive, and I personally believe
that is the main reason why God tells us to do it.

Kathy

He does want us to be merciful with other people and longsuffering toward them when they
make mistakes, but many people we are asked to forgive are not even willing to admit they
need forgiveness. When we forgive we are free to worship, our prayers have power, peace
is ours to enjoy, and we have the comfort of knowing that we have obeyed God.
Justice means to make wrong things right. God is justthat is one of the most beautiful
things about His character. When we trust Him, He always makes wrong things right in
our lives. His desire is that people repent for their sins, but if they dont, then sin brings
its own penalty. This is the main reason we should pray for our enemies and leave the
rest to God.

Want to
ask Joyce?

Dear Joyce,
I used to want to write
fiction stories, but a lady
told me that stories of
fiction are just lies and by
writing them I would be
sinning and denying my
faith as a Christian.
Is this true?

Maria,
I dont agree with your friend at all. God gives us a creative imagination, and there is
nothing wrong with using it to bring entertainment and joy to other people as long as it is
not something God would be ashamed of.
As you may know, I released a fiction project recently, titled The Penny, and intend to do
more in the future. Jesus used parables in His own teaching ministry, which are fictional
stories used to teach a principle.
Fiction cannot be classified as a lie because the very fact that it is advertised as fiction is
letting people know that it is a made-up story and not a true fact. There is no deception in
fiction. I suggest that you follow your heart and if you want to write fiction, do it.

Maria

Your question, with an answer from Joyce, may appear in an upcoming issue of
Enjoying Everyday Life magazine. Please be aware, however, that due to heavy
mail volume, we may be unable to respond to every question.

weakness, muscle aches and clear mucus
drainage. This usually lasts seven to ten days.
Some people commonly confuse colds with
allergies or a sinus infection. If your symptoms
begin quickly and end within one to two weeks,
its most likely a cold. If the symptoms last
more than two weeks, it could progress into
a sinus infection. Colds rarely produce fevers
or headaches. Allergies are associated with a
hacking cough and red, watery, itchy eyes.

Flu
The symptoms of influenza (commonly
known as the flu) appear suddenly and often
include a fever of 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Along with the fever, you will likely experience
shaking chills, body aches, headache, pain when
moving the eyes, fatigue, loss of appetite, a dry
cough, runny nose and a dry or sore throat.

Sinus Infection or Sinusitis:

Chronic and Acute

You can win the battle against

colds, flu and sinus infections.
by Don Colbert, M.D.

Chronic sinusitis is the most common chronic

disease in the United States, affecting nearly
40 million people. Symptoms include nasal
congestion, postnasal drainage, sore throat,
cough, low-grade fever, decreased sense of taste
and smell and a constant runny nose. Acute
sinusitis is usually triggered by a cold that lasts
longer than two weeks. Symptoms include
yellow or green nasal drainage, a fever, cough,
postnasal drip, facial pressure (especially around
the cheeks, eyes or forehead), pain in the upper
molars and swelling of the face. More than likely
you will have difficulty sleeping as well due to
these symptoms.

Preparing the TroopsNutrition

You have an amazing shield of defense

that God has provided for your body. A healthy, intact immune
system can take on even the most deadly assaults of cancer,
hepatitis and any other killer that may be lurking in your
environment. Colds, flu and sinus infections pose little challenge
to a healthy, well-functioning immune system, which is already
handling many of these invaders with ease.
The immune system is a strong and ready defender for your
body, but instead of working with it, often we work against it,
sabotaging and undermining its power. Hosea 4:6 says, My people
are destroyed for lack of knowledge (KJV). This information will
help you to support and supply your immune system. It will build
up your defenses and allow you to walk in divine health.

What are the symptoms?

Colds
More than 200 different viruses can cause the common cold.
When you have a cold, you will probably experience symptoms
including nasal congestion, sore throat, head congestion, fatigue,
19

www.joycemeyer.org

Nutrition is a key factor in rebuilding your

immune system, which comprises the walls of
defense for your health. It is largely dependent
upon you to provide it with the proper
nourishment it requires to do its job.

Be smart about your sugar.

In 1999, the U.S. Department of Agriculture
reported that the average American consumes
approximately 150 pounds of sugar per year. Not
only cakes, pies and cookies are loaded with
sugar, but sugar is also a hidden ingredient
in many other foods, such as ketchup, salad
dressing and breads. A diet that is high in sugar
makes a person more susceptible to sickness. A
high intake of sugar can impair your immune
system for four hours or longer.

Beat the bad fats rap.

Most people follow a diet that consists of eating

E N J O Y I N G E V ER Y D A Y LI F E

Honoring your body and caring for it shows your respect and honor
for the One who created it.
not only way too much sugar, but also refined
flour, too much bread and excessive amounts
of bad fats. Bad fats include hydrogenated and
partially hydrogenated fats. You can find them in
the following: vegetable shortening, margarine,
many deep-fried foods, some salad dressings,
cakes, pies, cookies and many processed foods.
These bad fats interfere with the ability of your
white blood cells to fight infections.

Choose to eat healthier.

Choose foods that are baked, grilled or
broiled instead of fried. Light stir-frying in
coconut oil, macadamia nut oil, a little organic
butter or extra-virgin olive oil is also acceptable.
Make it a point to eat at least five servings
of fresh vegetables and fruits every day.
Organically grown varieties are best because
they are free from the pesticides, chemicals,
fertilizers, waxes, fumigants and other toxic
materials that contaminate our foods and
impair immune function. If you have chronic
sinus infections, you may need to avoid sugar
and dairy products, especially cheese, ice cream,
chocolate, food additives and alcohol, which can
trigger a buildup of mucus in many individuals.
It is vital to drink enough spring or filtered
water on a daily basis. Water will keep your
respiratory tract well hydrated. I recommend
drinking at least two quarts of water a day. Get
accustomed to drinking room temperature water
instead of iced water. Cold liquids can actually
impair normal respiratory function.
Is chicken soup really good for the soul and a
cold? Yes! It has been called Jewish penicillin
for years, and researchers are now discovering
what Jewish mothers knew all along. It helps to
clear out the mucus in your sinuses. Besides hot
chicken soup, hot herbal teas, vegetable broths,
spicy foods such as cayenne pepper, garlic and
horseradish all help to clear nasal congestion.

Sending in SuppliesSupplements
A good general knows one way to conquer
an enemy is to cut off its supply lines. Colds, flu
and sinus infections attack your body like an
invading army. During each attack, massive
amounts of nutrientsvitamins, minerals,
enzymes, amino acids and moreare required to
maintain its strong shield of defense. Your body
needs to maintain a good, steady supply of basic
vitamins and minerals to maintain its fighting
edge. Make sure you are taking a comprehensive
multivitamin/mineral, as well as a healthy dosage

of vitamin A, B-complex, and vitamin C, which can usually be

found in most multivitamins. Selenium and zinc are minerals that
have shown great results for the immune system. Many people also
opt to get a flu vaccination as a preventative measure against the
flu. I recommend the flu vaccine without mercury or thimerosal.

Ready for BattleLifestyle Factors

Getting enough sleep is absolutely critical for maintaining a
strong immune system. Deep sleep actually helps to strengthen
the immune system and repair all tissues. Most of us try to push
through the cold or flu, but your body is signaling you to sleep for a
reason. God created principles of health within your body that you
need to obey. Make sure you take time to rest and sleep so that your
body can heal.
Exercise is an excellent way to stimulate the immune system
and help prevent infections. If you do get sick, you need to limit
your exercise to light walking until you recover. If you have the flu,
stop exercise altogether until you recover.
Another important thing to remember is to wash your hands.
When using a public restroom, use your paper towel to turn off the
water and open the door. Remember that all the people who didnt
wash their hands have touched these surfaces. It might also be a
good idea to carry antiseptic wipes with you.

forgiveness
win s
every time
by Billy Joe Daugherty

If you make a decision to forgive, forget and

release your assailants and offenders, the
blessing of God cannot be stopped from
coming upon your life.
The very things that are scars will be turned into
stars! The very things that hurt you can become
the key to your promotion or the platform from
which you go to the next level of success. They
will serve as stepping-stones for you.
However, if you nurse and rehearse your
scars and curse your offenders, your scars will
become like a millstone around your neck, and
that will be the end of a fruitful life for you.
If someone has hurt you, then you must
choose to forgive that person! Forgiveness is not
a feeling and it is not an emotion. It is a decision.
Always remember, forgiveness is a choice. It is

23

based on what God did for you when He forgave

you through Jesus death on the cross.
Ephesians 4:32 says it this way: And be kind to
one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
even as God in Christ forgave you (NKJV). I need
forgiveness so I am going to forgive. I need
mercy so I am going to show mercy.
How much forgiveness do you need? Put it in
proper perspective. In the Lords Prayer, Jesus
taught that we are to forgive others, even as
our Father has forgiven us our trespasses; if we
dont forgive others, neither will our Father in
heaven forgive us (see Matthew 6:12, 14,15).

Soaring Past Offenses

Everywhere Joseph went he had a battle,

but God always delivered him. David, who was
delivered by God from many troubles, wrote
in Psalm 34:19, Many are the afflictions of the
righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them
all (NKJV).

E N J O Y I N G E V ER Y D A Y LI F E

It was the same in Pauls life. He could have

quit after that first experience in the Philippian
jail. He cast the devil out of a girl, and the next
thing he knew, he was in jail for it. He could have
said, Lord, if this is what I get for preaching,
then thats it. If that is Your reward,

broke out. Think of it! What was a
stumbling block and a scar to Paul
became a testimony that has literally catapulted
millions of people to victory!
Your trial or your most horrible experience
can become a terrific testimony, depending
on your response. Im sure youve heard the
old saying, Your attitude will determine your
altitude. Its not the things that happen to you
or how fast the wind comes against you that
counts toward success. Its your response that
counts. Its the way you set your wings, because
the stronger the wind, the higher you will soar!

Jesus Is Our Example

In Luke 23:34, with spikes in His hands and

feet, a crown of thorns on His head, and a back
that had been beaten with the Roman scourge,
Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not
know what they do(NKJV). It wasnt about an
emotional feeling. It was about a decision based
on the love of God. If you have Christ in your
life, then you can do what Jesus did.
Jesus is the ultimate forgiver. He is the
ultimate example of rising up after He got
knocked down. He is the ultimate example of
going ahead and praising and giving thanks.
We need to make a decision that we are going to
follow Jesus example.
When I was punched in the eye during a
church altar call in November 2005 by a man
who was out on a weekend pass from a mental
institution, I came back on stage and we, as a
congregation, chose to forgive the man. Yes, the
punch hurt. Yes, I was bleeding. But we prayed
for the Lord to bless that man and do a work in
his life to transform him. Then we all began to
praise God while the blood was flowing from my
eye down my face.
When you get hit in an unexpected way, you
have to get up and keep on going. Its not the time
to quit. Its not the time to fall into depression.
Its not the time to get distracted with anger.
Keep on doing what God has assigned you to do.
Just stay with it!

Leave the Past Behind and Watch

Your Future Unfold

Isaiah 43:18,19 says, Do not remember the

former things, nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring
forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a
road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert
(NKJV). To get through life, you have to forget
about your past experiences, and let go of those
things that are behind you.
We can learn a lot from Joseph, who took
some very important steps to move forward
after being sold into slavery by his brothers
and wrongfully accused by Potiphars wife. He
had to learn to let go of his past so that he could
embrace the future that God had for him. What
has happened in your past is past, but what you
do about the past will control your future. You
may not have had control over what happened
in the past, but you do have control over your
response to what happened.
We cant always explain why something
happens, but one thing we can do is ask for
the grace of God to forget about it and leave it
with God. There are other relatives, situations,
circumstances and battles that you are going to
have to face, and you need all of your energy
focused on them rather than dwelling on
your past.
Paul said it like this in Philippians 3:13,14:
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended;
but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are
behind and reaching forward to those things which
are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of
the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (NKJV).
Forget those things that are behind and
holding you back. Reach forward to what is
ahead for you. If you keep your eye on the prize,
its easier to do whatever it takes to win. And
forgiveness will cause you to win every time!

You have Gods permission to enjoy today while

you are reaching for and embracing tomorrow.
Are you enjoying your life?

I am convinced one of the most

important lessons we can ever learn is to enjoy every day of our lives. One of my
greatest desires in ministry is to see people enjoy the life that Jesus died to give
usnot for us to just read about it in a book or talk about it at a meeting, but to
walk in it daily and experience it as a reality in our everyday lives.

Reaching the Goal

Im an extremely goal-oriented person, so I can sometimes become so focused
on tomorrow that I often fail to appreciate and enjoy today. I have the tendency
to think ahead, looking to the next event, work toward the completion of the next
assignment, and see what I can check off of my to-do list. Over the years I have
learned that the intense pursuit of one goal after another was causing me to miss
out on some of the enjoyment life has to offer.
It doesnt help that our fast-paced, high-pressure society urges us to accomplish
as much as we can as quickly as we can, so we can then accomplish even more.
God has purposes and plans He wants us to fulfill during the course of our earthly
lives, but He also wants us to enjoy and make the most of every day we live.

Discovering Our Funny Bone

I have come to believe that people desperately want to enjoy their livesto live
every day with peace, contentment and joy, which I like to define as anything
from extreme hilarity to calm delight. Some people are so desperate for joy that
they are joining laughter clubs where people meet together every morning for
the sole purpose of finding some way to laugh before they start their day. We may
chuckle at the idea (no pun intended) of laughter clubs, but we should consider
the fact that just the need for them reveals a deep hunger in peoples hearts to
experience true joy.

May 2008 28

Some secrets arent meant to be whispered.

B on u s F e a t u r e

Recently, Pew Research Center surveyed

Americans to see if they are enjoying their lives.
Only about 34 percent reported that they are very
happy in life.1 This shouldnt be a surprise to us
because we live in a culture where what people have
seems to matter more than who they are. But is all
this stuff really worth having if we cant enjoy it?
There isnt any amount of money, measure of fame,
job title, talent or skill that does any of us a bit of
good if we cant even enjoy our lives.
What about you? Are you experiencing satis
faction and contentment with who you are and what
you do each day? Are you taking time to notice and
appreciate the everyday experiences that can make
your life rich and rewarding? Or are you racing
through each day just so you can get to the next one?
Do you find things to laugh about on a regular basis,
or are you allowing your responsibilities and the
pressure involved to keep you on edge?

The Secret to

Permission to Enjoy Life

Maybe youve wanted to enjoy your life but believe
that God doesnt really want you to have any fun. I
have great news for you because God wants you
to enjoy today and every day. Jesus says in John
10:10, The thief comes only in order to steal and kill
and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life,
and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).
Jesus wants us not simply to be alive, but to
enjoy being alive. He did not come simply to give
us physical life or to give us just enough to get
through lifes challenges and difficulties. We were
not created to merely exist, dreading each new day,
praying for strength just to make it through another
day. No, we were created to enjoy every aspect of
our livesevery day of our lives. Jesus came to
impart true life to us, the rich, deep, joy-filled life
God has for usa radical life, the kind that is in
abundance, to the full, until it overflows.
A few years ago a woman thanked me for giving
her permission to enjoy life after she heard me
teach on this subject. I believe she represented
many other people who have never felt free to
enjoy life. We must choose to believe that it is Gods
will for us to thoroughly enjoy life. We have Gods
permission to enjoy today while were reaching for
and embracing tomorrow.
I challenge you to go to a new level of enjoyment
in your daily life. Determine in your heart that
you are going to enjoy where you are today on
your way to where you want to be tomorrow. Say
it with your mouth; post it up on your bathroom
mirror; make it your screensaver: I am determined
to enjoy today!

letting go

of the past
THERE ARE MANY COMPLEX issues in
families today that are causing a lot of hurt.
Family situations are a major source of real hurt.
When the people we love most hurt us, it really
stings our hearts. You may have been stabbed
in the back, talked about, cut down, beaten, or
even sexually abused. But dont think you are
without hope. You can be whole again, and you
can restore lost relationships. It all starts with
forgiveness.
My mom and I had a really tough time
getting along as I grew up. I felt like she
was constantly out to get me, that I was
punished worse than my brothers and
sisters, and that she deliberately said things
to make me feel low. I grew up feeling so
much hate toward my mom, and I didnt
have any idea how to get rid of it.
After I gave my life to the Lord, He
began to deal with me about my mom.
I had to change the way I felt toward
her. God spoke to my heart that I had to
forgive my mom, but I had no idea how.
What you are about to read is exactly the
process God took me through to forgive
her and believe me, it works! God has the
power to heal your memories.

Memorize Scripture
You have to be ready to do warfare if
you really want to get rid of your pain. The
way you fight this war is with Gods Word.
The devil has been cramming guilt and
condemnation down your throat for years.
Now its time to cram some TRUTH in your
heart concerning forgiveness.

Find scriptures on forgiveness and write
them down on index cards and take them
with you everywhere. Meditate on them until
you are saying them in your sleep. Matthew
6:14, Mark 11:25 and Luke 6:37 will get you
started on your path to forgiveness.

Make a Decision to Forgive

Forgiveness is not a feeling. You will
never wake up one day and think, Boy, I
feel like forgiving today! Our natural human
tendency is to never forgive. The one who
hurt you deserves for you to be very angry

with him. No one is arguing with that. The whole idea is that you
give up your right to strike back.
You cannot wait for God to tell you to forgive; He has already
told you that you have to forgive (see Matthew 6:14,15). It doesnt
depend on the other persons repentant heart. You must forgive
even if he never admits he did anything wrong. And it doesnt
matter if you will never see him again. You can forgive him
without seeing him. Forgiveness is between you and God.
Once you make the decision to forgive, the heaviness
begins to lift off your life! A miracle happens in your
heart! Remember Stephen? As he was being stoned, he
said, Lord, do not hold this sin against them (Acts 7:60
NIV). Wow! Right in the middle of the stoning, he made a
decision to forgive the very men who were killing him. You
can decide right in the midst of people persecuting you to
let go of it, with Jesus power.

Fight the Battle in Your Mind

Now you have made the decision and prayed the prayer,
but the battle isnt over yet. You will not necessarily feel any
overwhelming love for the person you forgave right away.
You may have a tendency to think, I dont feel any differently
about the person or about my pain, so I guess I didnt really
forgive him. WRONG!
If you made the decision, then you have forgiven.
The devil will try to trick you into feeling condemned
and confused. It is important to remember the date and
time you prayed and forgave, so you can remind the devil and
remind yourself what you chose to do. As you continue to do
this, you will begin to feel less and less pain.
One last note: If you have been involved in sexual abuse,
you should confide in your pastor or a qualified Christian
counselor. It is imperative that you have someone help you
work through these forgiveness issues, especially before you
get married. It will keep you from many years of grief and
marital struggles if you will take the time to do this now.
Your healing can begin today; it all starts with your decision
to forgive.
Many teenagers made a similar decision at our Acquire
the Fire youth events this past spring. God is desperately
looking for a generation that is willing to stand up for Christian
values and principles and lead a generation to the truth. It
starts as we all decide to forgive those who have hurt us.
Ron Luce is the president and founder of Teen Mania Ministries, a Christian
organization reaching millions of young people worldwide. He passionately
declares the Gospel through Acquire the Fire TV broadcasts, youth events,
camps and media resources, challenging teens to take a stand for Christ.

Beauty for Ashes

od used your book Beauty for Ashes

to bring healing to my broken heart
and change to my life. I was not
physically or sexually abused, but I
was emotionally abused. I grew up in an unsaved
family with a father who was very demanding.
He did not express love, kindness or affirmation
toward his children. An emotion that was often
expressed, however, was anger and disapproval.
As a result, I grew up very angry, strong-willed
and determined, yet emotionally
vulnerable. The man who should
have loved me most in the world
was mean, cold and distant, and
I was never anything he wanted
me to be.
In 1994, during my second
year in college, I accepted Jesus
Christ as my Lord and Savior.
I told God the only thing I
wanted was for Him to fix my
relationship with my dad. I asked Him to fix me,
change me and give me the strength to endure
until it happened. A few days later a Christian
friend took me to a Christian bookstore and
I saw your book. The subtitle, How to Receive
Emotional Healing, is what caught my attention.
I purchased the book and immediately began
reading. As I read, it was as though my life was
being unfolded on the pages. Although I was not
sexually abused, the hurt, the bitterness and
the feelings were all the same. I could so deeply
identify with your personality because it was
like mine. Your book led me into deep prayer for
my father. That time of prayer was a significant
experience with the Holy Spirit!
The phrase in your book hurting people
hurt people prompted me to investigate my
dads childhood because I knew very little about
his life. I learned some pretty terrible things.

Although it did not justify my dads behavior and

how he treated us, it helped me to have compassion
for him. Knowing about his pain helped me to take
myself out of the role of victim. I realized that he
really did love me; he was just trapped in his own
hurt and couldnt get out of it to show me his love.
I grieved deeply for the man I had hated so much
of my life. How awful it must be to hurt your entire
life, have your own children, try to love them, and
wind up with them hating you because they dont

understand your pain. It was then that I understood

that he was passing on the pain of his childhood
and that I would pass this on to my children if I
held on to the hurt and refused to forgive him.
Thats how God changed me! He replaced the
hate in my heart with a new love that gets deeper
each year. Now thirteen years later, I enjoy a new
and loving relationship with my father. The love God
restored is so pure its as though our relationship
and my heart were never marred by hatred and
bitterness. Whats even greater is that I am now
the mother of three wonderful little boys whom
I am FREE to love. My dad is learning to express
love to my boys and it is reaching his children too.
Most importantly, my boys are the first generation
in my family to be born into a saved family! Your
book and life not only affected my dad and me, but
it affected the lives of my children and will affect
their children.

Ahhhhthe sweet sound of forgiveness!

It stirs up a variety of images, including

But most of all, a picture of a heart once heavy
with unrepentant sin, freed to soar high with
indescribable joy. Scripture tells us in Acts

forgiveness and release from sins.
As Christians, we have the pleasure of living
in forgiveness. Its not a one-time deal that we
only receive at salvation, but rather an ongoing desire to do so. These are the times we truly start to grasp an
gift from God that keeps us moving in the right understanding of what Gods forgiveness offers usfreedom
direction. Psalm 32:1 states, Blessed (happy, from guilt, shame, regret, resentment and much more. Its also
fortunate, to be envied) is he who has forgiveness the time we begin to see how important it is for us to forgive those
of his transgression continually exercised upon who have wounded us.
