Q 1 Gas at 7 bar and 300C expands to 3 bar in impulse turbine stage. The nozzle angle is
70C with reference to the exit direction. The rotor blades have equal inlet and outlet
angles, and the stage operates with the optimum blade speed ration. Assuming that the
isentropic efficiency of the nozzles is 0.9, and that the velocity at entry to the stage is
negligible, deduce the blade angle used and the mass flow required for this stages to
produce 75KW. Take C p =1.15 kJ/kg K
Q 2 Write a short note on impulse and reaction turbines.
Q .3 A multi stage gas turbine is to be designed with a number of impulse stages. Design
conditions for the turbine are as follows:
Inlet pressure of gas = 6 bar
Inlet temperature of gas = 900K
Outlet pressure of gas = 1 bar
Overall isentropic efficiency of turbine = 85%
Nozzle outlet angle of all the stages =75 with reference to the axial direction
All the stages are to have equal inlet and outlet blade angles
All the stages are to have equal inlet and outlet gas velocities
Mean blade speed = 250 m/s
Assumption of optimum blade speed ration corresponding to maximum utilization factor
can be made.
Assume Cp =1.15 KJ/Kg K
