JOB DESCRIPTIONS:
Mustang News Editor-in-Chief
Overview: As the public face of Mustang News the Editor-in-Chief handles pressure with grace
and leads diplomatically. This person ensures there is fresh, regularly updated content across
platforms. The EIC is responsible for final editorial decisions across all platforms. The main
focus is digital-first storytelling, but the EIC must oversee the printed products as well. The EIC
plans, oversees and directs staff meetings and events and advises the Media Board of any
instances of staff members who act unethically or do not perform their job duties.
Responsibilities:
Oversee and strategize the rollout of major stories and large event coverage.
Survey the college and professional media landscape to find the most successful and
engaging practices.
Implement innovative ideas and help the staff adjust to new expectations.
Propose hiring of new staff, manage staff and develop new staff members so they
understand Mustang News standards and become better journalists throughout the year.
Review sensitive content for final approval.
Respond to criticism professionally and work to bridge divides between Mustang News and
other campus and non-campus entities.
Be on hand to supervise summer Mustang and all print production nights.
Salary: $600/month
Mustang News Community Outreach Director
Overview: Reporting directly to the Editor-in-Chief, the Community Outreach Director is the key
contact point between the editorial operation and the business operation of Mustang News. The
Social Media Director reports to the Community Outreach Director and the two use social
platforms to build the Mustang News brand and voice. In addition to collecting feedback from
readers and viewers on what they want and need from Mustang News, they connect the Cal
Poly community to Mustang News through social media, university events and marketing
campaigns. When tasked by the Editor-in-Chief, the Community Outreach Director may be the
public voice for Mustang News in the community, which includes answering comments on the
website and on social media. The Community Outreach Director must be well-versed in the
variety of uses for social media and be able to offer advice to individual reporters and editors on
the most effective way to incorporate social media into their reporting and the best ways to
engage readers on personal and branded accounts.
Responsibilities:

Enhance Mustang News products by engaging the Cal Poly community in dialogues before,
during and after a story is published.
Teach reporters how to use community input and knowledge to inform stories.
Inform editorial staff about events and how they can be helpful and engaging.
Crowdsource content from Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms for posts on
MustangNews.net.
Occasionally write press releases about the achievements of Mustang News or to promote
stories to a national audience.
Report on website analytics during weekly editorial meetings.
In charge of the weekly newsletter, manage contacts for outreach emails, story promotions
and campaigns.
Research ways to drive traffic and engagement to MustangNews.net and social media
accounts.
Develop projects to promote the Mustang News brand to the Cal Poly community.

Salary: $400/month
Mustang News Managing Editor (News)*
Overview: The Managing Editor for News manages news coverage across all platforms and
reports to the Editor-in-Chief. The ME for News understands and coordinates all story
assignments from the news desk, including all stories being reported on from within Mustang
News and in classes that directly contribute content to Mustang News. This person must work
with the News Editor and Broadcast News Director to plan comprehensive coverage of the most
important stories.
Responsibilities:
Develop a coverage plan, in a meeting with the News Editor and Broadcast News Editor at
the beginning of each week to be shared with news team, Editor in Chief and Community
Outreach Editor.
Meet with the Managing Editor, Broadcast News Director, Community Outreach Editor and,
when possible, Editor in Chief to discuss coverage and Page 1 choices.
Be planning and coordinating essential coverage and training over the summer and be
physically in the newsroom at least two weeks before fall term.
Promote team cohesion.
Read and edit enterprise and long-form news stories.
Take the lead in planning and coordinating large-scale news event coverage.
Understand the big picture when it comes to news at Cal Poly and add context to story
assignments.
Manage copy desk to ensure stories are accurate and published on time.
Attend Mustang News print production nights, working with the editor-in-chief to read pages
and make editorial decisions.

Mustang News sports coverage. Assuming the sports editor is well-versed in Cal Poly editorial
sports coverage, this addition wont add too much extra work to the managing editors plate.

Salary: $500/month
Mustang News Managing Editor (Multimedia & Web)*
Overview: The Managing Editor manages multimedia, arts and sports coverage across all
platforms and reports to the Editor-in-Chief. The ME understands and coordinates all story
assignments from the arts and sports desks, including stories being reported on from within
Mustang News and in classes that directly contribute content to Mustang News. This person
works with the arts, sports and multimedia editors and the broadcast news director to plan
comprehensive coverage of the most important stories.
Responsibilities:
Coordinates breaking news coverage
Meet with the Managing Editor for News, Broadcast News Director and, when
possible, Editor in Chief to discuss coverage and Page 1 choices.
Acts as primary point of contact with the 352 lab class.
Assign multimedia content and act as primary editor of all digital stories.
Work with web editor to implement new digital tools and maintain website.
Promote team cohesion.

be physically in the newsroom at least two weeks before fall term.
Read and edit enterprise and long-form news stories. Take the lead in planning and
coordinating large-scale multimedia coverage, such as rivalry games and on-campus
concerts.

Mustang News Broadcast News Director
Overview: Reports to the Managing Editor for News, but is included in all top-level meetings with
the Editor-in-Chief and managing editors. The Broadcast News Director is responsible for
producing and coordinating broadcast video content for the web and the 30-minute weekly show
in conjunction with the Journalism 353 capstone class. The Broadcast News Director works with
the News Editor to ensure sufficient video content is secured for broadcast and coordinate news
stories between digital and broadcast platforms. The Broadcast News Director will also work
with other editors to brainstorm television specials, such as weekly sports talk shows and
interviews with leaders on campus.
Responsibilities:

Meet with the Managing Editor for News, Managing Editor for Arts and Sports, Community
Outreach Editor and, when possible, Editor in Chief to discuss coverage and Page 1
choices.
Schedule and supervise the broadcast staff.
Acts as primary point of contact with the 462 lab class
Be planning and coordinating essential coverage and training over the summer and be
physically in the newsroom at least two weeks before fall term.
Assign stories to reporters on staff.
Identify the important news issues within the university and community at large.
Work with other student media leaders to ensure quality across all Mustang News platforms.
Research, write and host broadcast stories on CPTV, KCPR, and MustangNews.net.
Review each piece of broadcast content posted to Mustang News video channels.
Copyedit broadcast content for spelling and grammar.
Suggest edits to reporters before their work is finalized.
Post video content to MustangNews.net and collaborate with section editors when stories
are produced in conjunction with written content.

Salary: $500/month
CCPR Manager
Overview: The Manager is an organized leader who assists with running Central Coast
PRspectives, the journalism departments student-run public relations agency. Candidates must
have completed JOUR 415, CCPR, and be able to devote approximately eight hours per week to
attending class sessions and performing outside work. The successful candidate will have a
working knowledge of contemporary public relations campaigns and tools, including Office, email,
social media and Wordpress. He/she will be extremely organized, have great care for detail and
communicate concisely and effectively.
Responsibilities:
Assist the course professor in planning the course. Track students office hours, tracking
logs, campaign status, attendance, etc
Act as a liaison among clients, students and the course professor
Advise students throughout their planning and ideation.
Be planning and coordinating essential coverage and training over the summer and be
physically in the newsroom at least two weeks before fall term.
Manage CCPR office supplies, cleanliness and technical issues.
Work closely with the student newspaper to provide content for the annual Best For issue.
Be available to meet with students outside class time and for periodic work reviews.
Manage the CCPR website and social media channels.
Act as a leader in the journalism department by representing the PR concentration and firm.
Be proactive about advancing the course to ensure that CCPR and Cal Poly are on the
cutting edge of contemporary public relations.
Salary: $400/month
KCPR General Manager

Overview: Hired by the Journalism Department, the general manager is responsible for the overall
operation of KCPR-FM as a media outlet and as an organization. As the stations leader, the
general manager provides the vision to ensure KCPR-FM grows, improves, and meets the needs
of the staff and listeners.
Responsibilities:
Coordinate and manage all aspects of the station in compliance with FCC, KCPR
manual, and campus regulations.
Schedule and conduct monthly meeting for all staff.
Meet weekly with the radio station adviser and submit quarterly reports regarding station
operation, including progress towards annual goals; income/expense projections and
progress; personnel notes including training efforts, recruitment/retention, morale and
staff vacancies; long-range planning; technology implementation; and any legal issues.
Establish and evaluate quarter and/or annual goals with each department director.
Be available for assistance regarding any aspect of station operation.
Serve as the final authority on any decision internal to station operations.
Develop the annual budget and set financial goals with the stations financial advisor.
Approve all expenditures.
Keep station rules, regulations, and procedures up to date.
Supervise all station employees and take disciplinary action as needed.
Responsible for hiring and firing all staff.
Third on-call for broadcast issues.
Salary: $400/month
