Brochure 03/29/15
Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02
Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not
including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in
InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,
headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Description:
I used this project as an opportunity to not only go above and beyond
the minimum two-sided folding brochure, but to also use it as my moms
birthday card! I thought this would be a fun way to go above and beyong
everyones expectations.
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Indesign
Process:
This entire project took about 27-28 hours. I found this to be the most
tedious thing I have done thus far, but it was also a great success! I made
the entire struture from card stock, decorative card stock, brads, permanent
craft glue stick, yarm, and a can of craft sealant. The entire project cost me
about $55, but at least now I have a scoring board, a bone knife, and an
awesome gift for my mom!

Attempted update- 04/03/15

Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02

Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side
is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for
colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype
(provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or
ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS
provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at
least the following: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font colors for
the paragraphs & list items, the background color, font families and add at
least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot
with .5 inch margins for printing.
Description:
This is a Web page i designed using both html and CSS. It is just to
showcase the logo itself. The giraffe moves up and down on the actual
page, so the movement isnt captured in this screenshot.
Programs Used:
NotePad,, CSS and HTML Adobe Illustrator color picker.
Process:
This took about 14 hours to complete. It took me super long time just for
trial and error with the coding. I used Adobe Illustrator color picker. The
hardest part was getting the giraffe to move, and it was a success. I was
trying to make the giraffe bounce around, but 3 1/2 hours later, I got upset.

Photodesign 02/07/15
Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02
Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate
layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides
Description:
In this project, we had to take 6 photos exemplifying each of these
qualities. The photography itself was fun. I think I had a pretty good idea
about what I was doing, all except the lead room..
Programs Used:
Adobe Photoshop
Process:
We had to take six different phtographs, all using different principles..
It was a hard concept for me to grasp at first, but it was fun! I adjused
the photo and began playing with the way I wanted to portray the color
scheme. It was hard to line all of the little boxes up, but it was a success!

Montage 02/14/15
Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02
Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple
elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour
choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme
word(s)
Select good quality images
Description:
I thought this would be a great example of how Christ can give us his light
if we will only walk with him, even in a world that is so seemingly dark
Programs Used:
Adobe Photoshop
Process:
It took me so long to find pictures with the angles I wanted, but I did it with
the help of Pinterest! I also used Photoshop, and a lot of the masking tool.
The masking was so hard, that I couldnt get all of the white from around
the girl from the previous picture, so I centered the message around the
glow left behind. This took about 6 hours after I was done with the initial
trial and error stage.

Business Cards
02/28/15

Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02

Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate
existing logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional
design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim
only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of
white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email
on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no
parentheses/ hyphens.
Description:
A business card just to really show how this company will stick their necks
out, even with a literal card.
Programs Used:
Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator
Process:
The Blend, masking, pattern, line and curve tools were mainly used. It was
a fun idea, and the spots were the most tedious, but fun part. Once I began,
I just couldnt stop! I ended up drawing the giraffe as an accident, but Im
glad I did!

Letterhead 02/28/15

Description:
A letterhead to match my businees cards/ business idea in a fun and
professional way.
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
Process:
Imade the giraffe on Adobe Indesign and then copied/pasted it over to
InDesign to get it on the letter head. I got the giraffe spots on the sides by
playing with the pattern tool. The giraffe ended up having no hair, but was
still high quality. InDesign was a lot more enjoyable than last time.

Flier 01/24/15
Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02
Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep
links in InDesign intact.
Description:
This week, our objective was to create a flier using elements provided by
Brother Kerr. I used Adobe InDesign to help me to actually put the flier
together. This flier is supposed to send the message about the potential
knowledge that this graduate leadership conference can offer. This is
directed towards the audience of either newly graduated college students
or college students about to take the next step towards seeking leadership
training. The stair-stepped title was to show the contrast in each of
the words, but the word, leadership, was made to especially contrast
because that is the main point of the entire thing. The phrase questioning
them at the bottom was also designed like it was as almost a challenge. I
chose the picture of her facing towards not only the text, to lead the flow
towards it, but also to the logo as an advertisement as well.
Programs Used:
InDesign
Process:
This was our first project. We were given images, text, and a few examples
to work from. We had to use Adobe Indesign to the best of our abilities
and create a completely new image. I dont think it was too hard.

Event Ad 01/31/15
Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02
Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.
Description::
This is an event ad for a 5K walk to help raise money for a little girl in West
Virginia who is currently needing help raising money for the many surgeries
she has had to help her with her ongoing struggle with DiGeorge syndrome.
Programs Used:
A scanner. Microsoft Word.
Process:
First, I had Baylees mother send me a picture to use for the event ad. I then
went through the process of having it printed to photo paper and scanning
that. After scanning the picture, I carefully removed the background and
began the process of trying to not only align everything, but also use
qualities such as contrast, organization, and unity that I thought would
be necessary to convey the message that I wanted to get across to my
audience. This was probably the hardest thing I could think of!

Logos 02/22/15
Class/ Section : COMM 130 SEC 02
Instructor: Brother Cory Kerr
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or
personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use
an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete
the image before submitting.)
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to
them.
Description:
These are three logos for a fictional women;s fitness company: Hotness in
Process
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator
Process:
We used Adobe Illustrator for this project. I really learned how to
manipulate the pen/ curve tools very well. This was the first time I had
really had to zoom in/out to try to get the look I wanted, and it proved itself
too be a challenge. This was done within 4 hours, and it shows. It was a
do over after my first attempt was proven to not be what exactly I was
wanting.
