M TYPES OF SPREADING

Cutting spread are classified by three factors:

1. The linear factor of the material
2. The direction of the material surface with respect to the cutting table surface
3. The direction of the surface nap or design with respect to the ends of the spread.
The linear factor of the material refers to whether the spread is made from bolts of yardage or
sectional pieces such as cut components sloping or leather skins. There are three directions with
respect to table surface:
1. Face up,
2. Face down
3. Face to face.
In face up spreads, all plies are spread with the right side of material facing away from the
cutting table surface, whereas in the face down spread all plies have the right side facing toward
the table surface.
Both face up and face down are called one way spreads (face one way). The face to face spread
is one in which all odd numbered plies face down.
There are two directions with respect to surface nap or surface design :
1. One way direction
2. Two way direction
In nap one way ( or design one way), the nap of all plies in the spread faces one end of the spread
, whereas in the two way nap ( design) direction spread, the naps of alternating plies face toward
the opposite ends of the ply. There are three classes of symmetry in fabric surface design :
1. The design is symmetrical in both directions fabric.
2. The design is symmetrical in one fabric direction and asymmetrical in the other
3. The design is asymmetrical in both direction of the fabric.
Design one way spreads apply only to those fabrics having a design which is asymmetrical with
respect to either the length or width direction . Most napped fabric are faced one way in cutting
spread .the two popular direction for spreading napped fabric are face up one way and face to

face one way . Spreads have either cut or folded ends ,folded end spread are always face to face
spreads , whereas spread with cut ends may be either face to face or face one way . This will vary
with spreading equipment and method .

METHODS OF SPREADING
Methods of spreading which lay alternate plies in different direction can be used for either way
fabrics. In this case the pattern pieces can face in either direction in the marker and the following
opportunities are available:
1. For symmetrical pattern pieces and fabric which is stable spread face to face the fabric can be
spread along face up and immediately back again face down.
2. For asymmetrical as well as symmetrical pattern pieces and fabric which is stable spread all
the Same way up the fabric can be spread along and immediately back again but the roll must be
turned on a turntable before returning.
Methods of spreading which lay each ply in the same lengthwise direction. Can be used for any
surface direction of fabric but if the fabric was one way either way or one way only, the pattern
pieces would be positioned appropriately. These represent the other two spreading opportunities.
3. For asymmetrical as well as symmetrical pattern pieces and fabric which is stable all the same
way up, the spreader spread in one direction only and dead head back to spread the next ply in
the same direction.
4. For symmetrical pattern pieces and fabric which is stable face to face the spreader spread in
one direction only but after dead heading back a turn able is required to rotate the roll before the
next ply is spread in on direction.
FORM OF SPREADING
The commonest form of spread in bulk production is one where all the plies of the fabric are the
same length underlying the complete marker plan. Though this plan can contain the parts for the
only one garment style it is normally scrambled that it is contain the pattern pieces for a number
of garments, usually in different sizes interlocked tighter in the most economical manner.
An alternative type of spread is the stepped spread in which a series of separate usually single
size marker are positioned on top of varying number of plies.
The methods of spreading which the industry users can be divided into:
(1) spreading by hand
(2) spreading using a traveling machine
