Wicca 101: Cleansing,

Attuning, Blessing
First and foremost Id like to give a big happy shout out too all my
followers. Wicca Weekly has hit the 100 mark and thats just awesome.
Thank you all for your support.
Today we are going to be talking about Blessing, Cleansing, and
Attuning! I figure its a nice little follow up to altar building.
So how do we go about doing these things?
I could write an entire book on the rituals and spells that are associated
with these three acts. Seriously. There are thousands of ways to do this.
I will go over the basics, and the best thing you can dois fill in the
extras for yourself. In cooking terms, Im giving you the basic recipe,
add some of your own seasonings.
Cleansing: is an act of removing (usually negative) energy from an item
or a space. This is done in multiple ways, but most often with a besom,
water, smudging*, or fire. Its usually a relatively simple process.
1.
To clean an item you need to first figure out why you
are cleansing the area, and therefore what to use.
2.
Also, what form of purification will leave your item
intact. This seems obviousbut cleansing your altar with fire may
cause just a few issues. I wouldnt recommend it.
3.
What can you use to cleanse?
1.
Any of the elements, Though Fire and Water are
usually more preferable.
2.
Your Besom, or ritual broom
3.
Smudging (though I feel this is using the
element of air..but that point has been argued)
4.
Moonlight or Sunlight
4.
Reasons for Purification:
1.
The Item is new
2.
The item is just new for you (ie, used)
3.
It has been sitting around for a long time
without use.
4.
Someone else handled it.
5.
You just feel the need to
5.
How to purify:
1.
Wipe the item down with a cloth or brush to
remove any physical debris.
2.
With whichever source you have picked
sprinkle, swipe, or brush the item while picturing it becoming

cleansed. I prefer to imagine it getting bathed in white light while

smudging with sage.
3.
Enjoy!
Blessing: A blessing is the ritual of imbuing an item or items with a
specific energy. In blessing something you sort of lock in the intent for
the item. When you bless something you need to do so with the
knowledge of what you are going to be using it for. If you are blessing a
recently acquired statue of your patron god you are asking for that god
to bless it with his energy. If you are blessing your athame for circle
castingwell you get the idea. Usually you only need to bless an object
once, but some people do this multiple times.
1.
Why do you bless an object? You are going to see a
lot of repetition from the Cleansing section
1.
The item is new/new for you
2.
It was given as a gift from someone else
3.
The item will be used in a ritual soon with a
specific intent/purpose
4.
You feel the need to
2.
What do you bless an object with? Lots of things, but
predominately
1.
God/Goddess energy
2.
The elements
3.
Spirits
3.
When should you bless an item?
1.
A lot of people put a great deal of pressure on
the when to bless an item, placing a great deal of stock in the
alignment of planets, moons, sun, and stars as well as the time of
the year or month or day of the week. I, personally, dont feel you
need to have the moon in waning while centered in Taurus on a
Wednesday in the middle of May. That being said, this doesnt
mean that it shouldnt matter to you. It does mean that I havent
much bothered researching it a great deal. But what Ive managed
to glean on the inter-web about the topic is:
1.
Many people prefer doing Blessings
with the Full Moon as that is the time in which the goddess
has the most power.
2.
Certain holidays are associated with
specific forms of blessing.
3.
For more masculine items the
position of the sun affects Blessing, for the more feminine
items the moon matters more.
4.
When in doubtresearch.
4.
Much simpler question than cleansing. Blessing is a
ritual, and like all rituals there are some guidelines.
1.
Cleanse your work area (usually with a Besom)
2.
Cast a circle

3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
5.
1.
6.
1.

Invite the energy that you want to use to bless

the item, God, Goddess, Elements, Spirits. Whichever you feel
works best in this situation.
Imagine that energy filling the item you are
working with, establishing its purpose.
Take as long as you need.
Thank the visiting energy, let it go.
Open the circle
How will you know that your item has been blessed?
Some people note a feeling of difference in the
item, can sense the aura change of it, or say that it feels right
now.
What to do if you dont think the blessing took/held.
Do it again.

Attuning: When you attune an object you make it yours. Sometimes

when you purchase something from your local pagan shop, or even
receive a new age gift from a friend or mentor its already blessed. But
now you have to make it yours. Which means tuning it into you. Heres
what you need to know:
1.
Tuning is both simpler and more complex than the
previous items.
2.
There are a couple thousand ways to do this. The
simplest of them is touching the item.
1.
Yestouching.
2.
When you handle an item you imprint yourself
on it little by little. This is a very simple and basic form of
imprinting.
3.
Take the item with you.
4.
Sleep with the item beneath your pillow.
5.
Use it. Seriously, put it on your alter and make it a
part of your meditations and rituals.
2.
You will know when an Item is attuned to you because it
feels comfortable and natural to you. Familiar, even.
Alrighty, thats it for now everyone! Once again please message me with
any thoughts or concerns or questions you might have.
