The short form of There is is Theres. There is no short form of There are.
There is a clock behind you. There are three chalks on the board.
We make a question by putting Is or Are at the beginning, before There.
Is there a pencil on the chair? Are there three rubbers?

We make a negative by putting not after there is or there are. The short form
of There is not is There isnt and the short form of There are not is There
arent.
