THE GREEK INTERPRETER

The story as usual open in the familiar quarters of Sherlock holmes & dr. Watson at 221-b Baker street in
London . it is a warm summer evening & the conversation wanders from subject until holmes mention
his family despite Watsons sharing the apartment for several years he has never known holmes to
speak much of his background & Watson is surprised to hear the holmes has an elder brother Mycroft
whome the detective dscribe as a reasoned run greater than himself . however Mycroft has an absolute
aversion to interruption his daily routine for the sometimes vigorous activity needed to some crimes .
Holmes has a purpose in mentioning Mycroft precisely at this time because his corpulent brother has
summoned him to what holmes characterizes as one of the strangest clubs in London .holmes and
Watson therefore stroll to the Diogenes club for Watson first sight of this strangest member of the city
strangest club . the Diogenes club was founded for gentleman who desired the refuge of a club & the
privacy of their homes.Conversationn is forbidden expect in the stranger`s Room in which Sherlock and
Watson joined by Mycroft.
Mycroft sets before Holmes the mystery of the story. A neighbor of his, Mr. Melas, has come to himwith
the tale of a very strange experience. Thinking at once of his younger brother, Mycroft has asked Melas
to join them at the club so that Holmes may pursue the problem. Melas, a Greek, works as a translator in
London, and his adventure began when he was hired for that purpose by Mr.Latimer.Latimer asked Melas
to accompany him to his house, when they entered their carriage,Latimer close the window shades so
that Melas could not see where they were going.Latimer then drew out a blackjack and threatened Melas
so effectively that Melas made no protest during their ride of almost two hours .it was dark in the house
but melas made out that it was quite big . in the room into which he was led by latimer and another
nerous giggling gentelemen whose name is later discovered to be Wilson kemp melas noticed a deep
pile carpet a high marbel mantel and a suit of Japanese armour .
ANOTHER MAN WAS BROUGHT INTO THE ROOM . HE WAS thin and emaciated and had sticking plaster all
over his face notably a big piec scaling his mouth . melas knew then that things were not right . melas
was sly enough to absence that his kidnappers were utterly ignorant of greek & used this to find out
some information while latimer and his goggling companion had melas translate demands that this man
sign some papers melas added his own short question to the dialogue . the man not only answered
latimer that he would never sign these papers but he also answered melas that his name is paul kratide
that they were starving him. He wrote all his answer because he was unable to speak through the
sticking plaster.
Much could be inferred from kratid answer to latimer too. Evidently latimer was trying to coerce kratides
into signing over property to him & a women was also involved . latimer warned kratides that his
obstinacy would do her no good .
